Book excerpt: This final technical report summarizes research on low-power pulsed Teflon(Trademark) plasma propulsion for satellites. Section I discusses a compact thrust stand used to make thrust and impulse bit measurements. Section II describes experimental measurements on a gasdynamic-type PPT in which measurements of magnetic field, electron number density, electron temperature, ion speed ratio and gas velocity are carried out by magnetic and advanced Langmuir probes. This section also describes thrust and heat-loss measurements. Section III outlines research with an electromagnetic-type PPT, intended to achieve very high specific impulse and efficiency.

Book excerpt: The simplicity of the pulsed plasma microthruster (PPT) allowed its selection for space flight application, even with low efficiency relative to other concepts. Improvements to PPT thrust efficiency and specific impulse represent today's challenges for research and development. Self consistent modeling of PPT behavior requires a description of the flow composition as it changes from complex molecular forms to highly ionized, constituent atoms. Heat flux from the plasma discharge to the solid propellant, (traditionally, Teflon), depends on transport coefficients for electrical and thermal conductivity in the partially ionized flow. Numerical simulations now use an existing, single temperature equation of state for Teflon (from the SESAME tables) along with classical transport formulas based on Coulomb collisions. The principal effort under the present grant has been to develop a two-temperature, LTE model for Teflon in the regime of interest for PPTs. This model includes 25 species (atoms, molecules, ions and electronics) and allows separates heavy-particle and electron temperatures. An idealized analysis, limited to one-dimensional, quasi-steady MHD flow, but incorporating resistive heating and thermal diffusion, has also been developed and provides useful guidance on PPT operation and propellant behavior.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pulsed Plasma Thrusters typically live in the low-range efficiency realm compared to other types of electric propulsion thrusters. In an attempt to explore if any added benefits could be gained from experimenting with a new propellant type, additional physics had to be incorporated into the classical RLC model approach. A study into modeling how a micro-wire propellant would react when subjected to energy deposition via current-driven heating was undertaken. Once a first-order estimate, verified with computational estimates, was obtained then the classical RLC series circuit model could be used to compare and validate the results obtained from experimentation. It was found that while the proposed propellant type is feasible, it produced performance differences that could not be explained solely by the classical model and a more exhaustive investigation into various phenomena will have to be pursued.

Book excerpt: This book presents some fundamental aspects of plasma technology that are important for beginners interested to start research in the area of plasma technology. These include the properties of plasma, methods of plasma generation and basic plasma diagnostic techniques. It also discusses several low cost plasma devices, including pulsed plasma sources such as plasma focus, pulsed capillary discharge, vacuum spark and exploding wire; as well as low temperature plasmas such as glow discharge and dielectric barrier discharge which the authors believe may have potential applications in industry. The treatments are experimental rather than theoretical, although some theoretical background is provided where appropriate. The principles of operation of these devices are also reviewed and discussed.

This book was released on 2018-06-21 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper evaluates the concept of pulsed plasma thruster (PPT) micropulsing. Micropulsing was a premise behind a power processing unit (PPU) and an energy storage unit (ESU) design that for certain mission profiles, it was advantageous to operate a PPT at lower energy but higher frequency rather than at a higher energy but lower frequency. This premise allows for reductions in the ESU volume and mass without paying a penalty in thrust. To complete the evaluation, an independent spark plug initiation unit, a high voltage power supply and a variety of mica foil capacitors at 2.6, 5, 10, and 20 capacitance were used to conduct a series of tests on a single PPT to map performance levels of thrust, impulse bit, efficiency and specific impulse over a comparable power range. Testing at NASA Glenn Research Center was conducted with breadboard PPT hardware. The test results showed that operating in the lower energy ESU micropulsing mode produced similar thrust levels to a higher energy ESU operating at high power level. Further testing however showed a reduction in specific impulse and efficiency when the smaller capacitances were used at the highest power levels. This would require more fuel mass for a mission that was predominately high power, potentially negating the ESU mass savings. Therefore, micropulsing is advantageous where most of a mission profile occurs at low power, but retains the ability to conduct high thrust maneuvers when necessary. Book excerpt: Written by a team of pioneering scientists from around the world, Low Temperature Plasma Technology: Methods and Applications brings together recent technological advances and research in the rapidly growing field of low temperature plasmas. The book provides a comprehensive overview of related phenomena such as plasma bullets, plasma penetration into biofilms, discharge-mode transition of atmospheric pressure plasmas, and self-organization of microdischarges. It describes relevant technology and diagnostics, including nanosecond pulsed discharge, cavity ringdown spectroscopy, and laser-induced fluorescence measurement, and explores the increasing research on atmospheric pressure nonequilibrium plasma jets. The authors also discuss how low temperature plasmas are used in the synthesis of nanomaterials, environmental applications, the treatment of biomaterials, and plasma medicine. This book provides a balanced and thorough treatment of the core principles, novel technology and diagnostics, and state-of-the-art applications of low temperature plasmas. It is accessible to scientists and graduate students in low-pressure plasma physics, nanotechnology, plasma medicine, and materials science. The book is also suitable as an advanced reference for senior undergraduate students.

Book excerpt: This report results from a contract tasking Kurchatov Institute for the results of studying a stationary plasma-low power-thruster (SPT) and an ablative pulsed plasma one (APPT). In the first part of the Report the results of studying the module characteristic for a small SPT and for the thruster plume. In particular there are represented the description of test facility and system of thruster performance and plume parameter measurements as well as the results of these measurements. In the second part of the Report, the results of studying some features of the physical processes in APPT, as well as an analysis of the produced results based on the numerical simulation for increasing their efficiency, are represented. A two-dimensional model of APPT has been developed. lnterferometric investigations inside APPT discharge channel, piezoprobe measurements of dynamic pressure distributions and ultra high-speed photography with visualization of plasma flows have been carried out.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The laser ablation plasma thruster is a novel electric propulsion thruster, which combined the laser ablation and electromagnetic acceleration. In order to investigate the plasma expansion and ionization in the laser ablation plasma thruster, which was difficult to obtain from experiments, the heat conduction model and fluid dynamics model were established. The heat conduction model was established to calculate the target ablation, taking into account temperature-dependent material properties, phase transition, dielectric transition and phase explosion. The fluid dynamics model was used to calculate the plasma properties, taking into account ionization, plasma absorption and shielding. The ablation plasma velocity, temperature and electron number density were predicted by using the numerical method. The calculated results showed that the peak values of ablation plasma velocity, temperature and electron number density fraction were distributed at the front of the plasma plume. Moreover, the discharge characteristics and thrust performance were tested with different charged energy, structural parameters and propellants. The thrust performance was proven to be improved by electromagnetic acceleration.
