Book excerpt: TO THE SECOND EDITION In the nine years since this book was first written, rapid progress has been made scientifically in nuclear fusion, space physics, and nonlinear plasma theory. At the same time, the energy shortage on the one hand and the exploration of Jupiter and Saturn on the other have increased the national awareness of the important applications of plasma physics to energy production and to the understanding of our space environment. In magnetic confinement fusion, this period has seen the attainment 13 of a Lawson number nTE of 2 x 10 cm -3 sec in the Alcator tokamaks at MIT; neutral-beam heating of the PL T tokamak at Princeton to KTi = 6. 5 keV; increase of average ß to 3%-5% in tokamaks at Oak Ridge and General Atomic; and the stabilization of mirror-confined plasmas at Livermore, together with injection of ion current to near field-reversal conditions in the 2XIIß device. Invention of the tandem mirror has given magnetic confinement a new and exciting dimension. New ideas have emerged, such as the compact torus, surface-field devices, and the EßT mirror-torus hybrid, and some old ideas, such as the stellarator and the reversed-field pinch, have been revived. Radiofrequency heat ing has become a new star with its promise of dc current drive. Perhaps most importantly, great progress has been made in the understanding of the MHD behavior of toroidal plasmas: tearing modes, magnetic Vll Vlll islands, and disruptions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There has been an increase in interest worldwide in fusion research over the last decade and a half due to the recognition that a large number of new, environmentally attractive, sustainable energy sources will be needed to meet ever increasing demand for electrical energy. Based on a series of course notes from graduate courses in plasma physics and fusion energy at MIT, the text begins with an overview of world energy needs, current methods of energy generation, and the potential role that fusion may play in the future. It covers energy issues such as the production of fusion power, power balance, the design of a simple fusion reactor and the basic plasma physics issues faced by the developers of fusion power. This book is suitable for graduate students and researchers working in applied physics and nuclear engineering. A large number of problems accumulated over two decades of teaching are included to aid understanding.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Electromagnetic Fluctuations in Plasma focuses on the theoretical investigation of the electromagnetic properties of a plasma (an ionized gas). The manuscript first takes a look at the general theory of fluctuations and electromagnetic fluctuations in media with space-time dispersion. Discussions focus on spectral distribution of the fluctuations and energy dissipation in the medium; dielectric and magnetic permittivities in a medium with spatial dispersion; current, charge, and field fluctuations in a medium; and inversion of the fluctuation-dissipation theorem. The text then examines the electrodynamic properties of an electron plasma and electromagnetic fluctuations in an electron plasma. The publication ponders on fluctuations in an electron-ion plasma and electron plasma in a magnetic field. Topics include plasma dielectric permittivity tensor in a magnetic field; longitudinal plasma oscillations in a magnetic field; fluctuations in charge and current densities in an equilibrium electron-ion plasma; and electron and ion density fluctuations in an equilibrium plasma. The text also tackles the passage of charged particles through plasma and dynamic friction and diffusion coefficients in a plasma. The book is a dependable reference for readers interested in the study of the electromagnetic properties of a plasma.

Book excerpt: Fusion, Volume I: Magnetic Confinement, Part A is the first of the two-part volume that covers the complexity and application of controlled magnetic fusion. This book is divided into seven chapters and starts with a brief historical overview and some properties of controlled fusion. The subsequent chapters deal with the principles, thermodynamic stability, and configuration of Tokamak plasma. These topics are followed by discussions of the variations and application of stellarators; the concepts of mirror theory; and the establishment of the experimental basis of the mirror-confinement physics. The last chapter focuses on the principles, configuration, and application of the reversed-field pinch. This book will prove useful to physicists, physics students, and researchers.

Book excerpt: The present collection of articles sets forth the results of experimental research on physical processes in various types of optical quantum devices (lasers). Data are presented on the regulation of the temporal and spectral characteristics of solid-state lasers using a bleachable filter. A mode self-locking state is realized in which ultraflhort light pulses are emitted. The stimulated emission in a pinch discharge due to transitions of singly and doubly ion ized argon atoms in the visible and ultraviolet parts of the spectrum is investigated. Pulsed lasing associated with electron transitions in diatomic molecules at the leading edge of a power ful current pulse in a gas is subjected to systematic analysis. The book is aimed at a broad spectrum of scientists and engineers specializing in quan tum radiophysics. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From July 7 to 12, 2008 in Zelenogradsk, a cosy resort on the bank of the Baltic Sea near Kaliningrad in Russia, the 1st International Conference “Atmosphere, Ionosphere, Safety (AIS-2008)” has been carried out. The State Russian University of I. Kant, Semenov Institute of chemical physics of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Pushkov Institute of terrestrial magnetism and radio-waves propagation of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and Russian Committee on Ball Lightning (BL) have acted as organizers of the conference. Financial support was made by Russian Fund of Fundamental Research Project N. 08-03-06041 and European Of?ce of Aerospace Research and Development Grant award FA8655-08-1-5052. The International conference “Atmosphere, Ionosphere, Safety” (AIS-2008) was devoted to (i) the analysis of the atmosphere–ionosphere response on natural and man-made processes, the reasons of occurrence of the various accompanying geophysical phenomena, and an estimation of possible consequences of their in?uence on the person and technological systems; (ii) the study of the monitoring possibility and search of the ways for the risk level decrease. Discussion of the physical and chemical processes accompanying the observable geophysical p- nomena was undertaken. One can see from a list of the Conference sections that questions of safety took only rather modest place, so main topics of the Conference became discussion of processes taking place in the atmosphere, ionosphere and methods of monitoring these processes.
