Book excerpt: Recent developments in solid-state radio frequency (RF) power technologies allow for the practical consideration of RF heated plasmas for space propulsion. These technologies permit the use of any electrical power source, de-couple the power and propellant sources, and allow for the effcient use of both the propellant mass and power. Effcient use of the propellant is obtained by expelling the rocket exhaust at the highest possible velocity, which can be orders of magnitude higher than those achieved in chemical rockets. Handling the hot plasma exhaust requires the use of magnetic nozzles, and the basic physics of ion detachment from the magnetic eld is discussed. The plasma can be generated by RF using helicon waves to heat electrons. Further direct heating of the ions helps to reduce the line radiation losses, and the magnetic geometry is tailored to allow ion cyclotron resonance heating. RF eld and ion trajectory calculations are presented to give a reasonably self-consistent picture of the ion acceleration process.

Book Synopsis Ion Cyclotron Range of Frequencies Heating of Plasma with Small Impurity Production by :
Download or read book Ion Cyclotron Range of Frequencies Heating of Plasma with Small Impurity Production written by and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plasma including plasma ions is magnetically confined by a magnetic field. The plasma has a defined outer surface and is intersected by resonance surfaces of respective common ion cyclotron frequency of a predetermined species of plasma ions moving in the magnetic field. A radio frequency source provides radio frequency power at a radio frequency corresponding to the ion cyclotron frequency of the predetermined species of plasma ions moving in the field at a respective said resonance surface. RF launchers coupled to the radio frequency source radiate radio frequency energy at the resonance frequency onto the respective resonance surface within the plasma from a plurality of locations located outside the plasma at such respective distances from the intersections of the respective resonance surface and the defined outer surface and at such relative phases that the resulting interference pattern provides substantially null net radio frequency energy over regions near and including substantial portions of the intersections relative to the radio frequency energy provided thereby at other portions of the respective resonance surface within the plasma.
Book Synopsis Heating in Toroidal Plasmas by : E. Canobbio
Download or read book Heating in Toroidal Plasmas written by E. Canobbio and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-02 with total page 640 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Heating in Toroidal Plasmas II, Volume 1 contains the proceedings of the 2nd Joint Grenoble-Varenna International Symposium held in Como, Italy, on September 3-12, 1980. The symposium provided a forum for reviewing the status of heating of toroidal plasmas as a means of creating a practically inexhaustible source of energy with maximum safety and economy. Topics covered range from plasma heating activities in countries such as Japan and the United States to electron cyclotron heating, lower hybrid resonance, and ion cyclotron heating. Comprised of 62 chapters, this volume first looks at radio-frequency heating efforts in the European Community as well as heating of toroidal plasmas in the United States and Japan, along with fusion research in China. The next section is devoted to electron cyclotron heating, paying particular attention to its theoretical aspects and presenting the results of experiments using the Tokamak and the CLEO stellarator. Subsequent chapters deal with the feasibility of igniting a thermonuclear plasma with lower hybrid heating; theory of lower hybrid heating in Tokamaks; plasma heating experiments in lower hybrid frequency range; and mode conversion and wave damping in the low frequency range. The excitation and propagation of the fast wave in a two-component non-uniform plasma are also explored. This monograph will be of interest to practitioners and research workers engaged in plasma physics.
Book Synopsis Feasibility and Operational Limits for a 236 GHz Hollow-Cavity Gyrotron for DEMO by : Kalaria, Parth Chandulal
Download or read book Feasibility and Operational Limits for a 236 GHz Hollow-Cavity Gyrotron for DEMO written by Kalaria, Parth Chandulal and published by KIT Scientific Publishing. This book was released on 2017-11-08 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The DEMOnstration fusion power plant (DEMO) will be the first fusion reactor, which is intended to generate net electrical power. For successful operation of DEMO, high-power gyrotrons with operating frequencies up to 240 GHz are required for plasma heating and stabilization. In this work, a systematic feasibility study and tolerance analysis are performed for the conventional-type hollow-cavity DEMO gyrotrons. The various approaches are also suggested to identify its operational limits.
