The symposium consisted of six sessions; each containing an invited paper, followed by six contributed papers reporting on recent, relevant research and development. The topics are: a review of research problems in basic shock tube flows and the possibilities for the shock tube in the future; driving techniques; explosive drivers; theoretical and experimental research in electromagnetic shock tubes; chemical kinetics and spectroscopy; and a review of shock tube diagnostics, instrumentation and fundamental data as well as the measurement of physical quantities.

Book excerpt: Air plasmas produced by shock waves were studied in the temperature range extending from 3000 K to 5000 K at densities ranging from 0.005 to 0.015 that of standard air density. Microwave reflection measurements from these plasmas have been made at frequencies of 3320 and 9375 mc. A major aim of the reflection measurements was to determine whether or not polarization forces on the electron are important. The present results indicate that the Sellmeier theory, in which the polarization forces are assumed to be negligible, is the proper theory for relating electron concentrations and cross sections with macroscopic electrical parameters. In addition, the collision frequencies of electrons in air were found to agree closely with those reported by Lamb and Lin. The data also provided an estimate of the relaxation time for electron formation. (Author).

Book excerpt: An experimental study of the interaction of a high conductivity shock tube flow with a one-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic channel was performed. The aim of the study was to obtain sufficient diagnostic measurements of the gas dynamic, plasma and electrical properties of the interaction process to allow a detailed comparison to be made with a time dependent theory. This theory which is based on the Lax-Wendroff method includes the incident shock front and contact surface trajectories and it can predict the formation of secondary shocks in the interaction region. For simplicity the experiments were performed in xenon under thermodynamic equilibrium conditions and at Hall parameters less than one in the interaction region. Reasonably good agreement was obtained between theory and experiment. Exact agreement could not be obtained due to difficulties in theoretically reproducing the initial experimental plasma conditions. Both the theory and the experiments showed that a secondary shock wave is formed as the contact surface enters the interaction region. It was also shown that although the gas slug length was five times the magnetohydrodynamic channel length, the flow was non-steady in the interaction zone. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The problem is treated of a plasma, produced by a shock wave, moving along a cylindrical shock tube and encountering an inhomogeneous, axially symmetric magnetic field. The output of a search coil is related to the magnetic Reynolds number of the flow, and the magnitude of the magnetic Reynolds number for which the magnetic field can begin to strongly affect the plasma flow is found. The behavior at the limits of very lowAND VERY HIGH MAGNETIC Reynolds numbers is calculated for the condition that the imposed magnetic field does not affect the plasma flow. The calculated behavior is then compared at the limits with measurements made with the use of a solid copper slug. It was found that a magnetic Reynolds number, Rm, greater than 60 is necessary to exclude a large fraction of the magnetic field from the interior of the conductor. Magnetic diffusion effects are not measurable until an Rm of 5 is reached, and the exclusion of more than 90% of flux from the search coil does not occur until Rm greatly exceeds 100. Measurements made with plasmas indicate that an appreciable fraction of the magnetic field is excluded from the plasma at high shock velocities, which gives the conditions necessary for studying the effects of magnetic forces on the plasma flow. Comparison with the copper slug measurements (AD-258 204) shows that a Rm of 20 was reached and allows the conductivity of the plasma to be calculated and compared with its theoretical values.
