Book excerpt: In this project period, the system for the removal of SO2 and NO(subscript x) is being studied in the presence of water vapor. Typical-mixtures being tested consist of 500--1500 parts per million SO2, 4--6% H2Og, 7--15% O2, and the balance is nitrogen. We have to date seen only a reduction in SO2 in the order of 40%. This is lower than the in dry air. At present this low reduction is attributed to arcing the discharge. A computer simulation is being performed to calculate the oxygen production rate in a dielectric-barrier discharge. The discharge is considered to be streamer like and from this the oxygen atom density can be calculated. This will give us an estimate of the amount of energy required to produce an oxygen atom. Eventually when this will be combined with a chemical code, we will get a cost estimate.

Book excerpt: The objective of the proposed research is to design and implement a novel scheme for the combined removal of SO2 and NO(subscript x) using a dielectric-barrier discharge in conjunction with UV irradiation. This investigation requires the design of a dielectric-barrier reactor and testing the proposed scheme under different conditions that exist in a flue gas. A reactor has been designed and electrical tests have been performed. The voltage characteristics of the plasma reactor has been studied. The authors have found that a discharge can be sustained at atmospheric pressures with a large inner electrode in the coaxial configuration. The testing of the uniformity of the discharge with UV irradiation has been very successful. The details are provided in this report and have been submitted to the Applied Physics Letter. Also both experimental and simulation work were carried out on the removal of SO2 and NO(subscript x). With the improved reactor, they have achieved a conversions of SO2 up to 85%. The simulation studies indicate that complete removal of NO(subscript x) is possible at reduced electric fields (E/N) of above 100 Td.

Extensive tests have been performed on the reactor during this period. The tests include electrical and optical emission spectroscopy for air, pure oxygen, pure nitrogen and, air with CO2 and SO2. These tests show that with an attaching gas (O2, CO2, and SO2) the discharge tends to form filamentory microdischarges. However, the use of UV irradiation tends to make the discharge more uniform. The results are encouraging because it shows that under most conditions a uniform atmospheric discharge can be maintained with UV irradiation. The results of the study were presented at the EPRI Symposium on Environmental Applications of Advanced oxidation Technologies. This symposium was jointly sponsored by EPRI and NSF.

Book excerpt: The authors have conclusively demonstrated that plasma chemistry alone is sufficient to convert SO2 to H2SO4, the plasma being produced by a dielectric-barrier discharge. They get nearly 80% removal of SO2 in a flue gas containing 775 ppm (parts per million) of SO2 and 99% for SO2 in concentrations of 300 ppm. A significant achievement during this period is the progress the authors have made with the wetting of the glass by the acid. They are using a simple and cheap method of coating the glass with Teflon (PTFE 30) to provide a hydrophobic surface. These films show chemical inertness to nearly all chemical and solvents and have low friction and antistick surfaces. The following important conclusions can be drawn from the results: (1) The percentage removal does not show saturation with the applied voltage. (2) The removal efficiency at an inlet temperature of 300 C is almost similar to 25 C at high voltages. (3) With longer electrodes the efficiency of removal increases. These results suggest that removal efficiency can be improved further by increasing the voltage and electrode length. The authors are yet to exploit the full range of parameters available. Therefore, it is likely that they will get much improved performance from the system.

Book excerpt: During the past few years the fight against air pollution has risen to a worldwide problem and has become one of the main challenges facing governments and worldwide institutions. It is a fact that conventional technologies are not efficient enough to face this problem so the necessity to develop new solutions and focus on different approaches is imperative and unavoidable. In particular, the goal is to avoid the continuously destruction of the atmosphere by treating the air and removing its pollutants, otherwise reducing its concentration to permitted levels for the human health. The present thesis focuses on carrying out an experimental study of VOCs removal using a non-thermal plasma technology. With a proper experimental setup, toluene was selected as the pollutant molecule to simulate the VOCs and during the experiments a homemade dielectric barrier discharge reactor was used. While plasma was assisting thermal oxidation reactions, the toluene removal efficiency was investigatedin terms of initial concentration of the pollutant, voltage of the discharges and gas ratio. Moreover, in further experiments the gas flow mixture was ignited in order to study the combined effect of plasma and combustion on toluene removal efficiency. Finally, the formation of ozone due to the plasma performance was studied in the flue gas.
