Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plantwide control structure design relies on two basic principles, namely, maintaining operating conditions at designed values and quick rejecting disturbance and/or directing disturbances to appropriate paths. The purpose of this research is to illustrate the application of the plantwide control structure design procedure of Wongsri (2012) for cumene process. The design procedure consists of 5 stages with 8 steps which emphasis on the establishment of a fixture plant by regulating material component flow rates using their quantifiers and handlers, and proper disturbance management. The new control structure designs are evaluated using Aspen HYSYS dynamic simulator and compared their performance with the selected base case (W. L. Luyben, Design and Control of the Cumene Process, Ind. Eng. Chem. Res., Vol. 49, No. 2, 2010: 719-734). Two new design structures (CS2 and CS3) give better performance than the base case because of their good maintaining plant conditions and better disturbance handlings.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this work, plantwide control structure design procedure of Wongsri (2012) is presented and applied to the monoisopropylamine process. The plant consists of a tubular reactor and three distillation columns. There are two recycle streams: gas and liquid. The raw materials are isopropyl alcohol and ammonia which are converted to MIPA, DIPA, and water. The by-product DIPA is recycled to react with ammonia to form MIPA. An excess of ammonia in the reactor inhibits the DIPA reaction, so ammonia is also recycled. The plant with control structure designed called the fixture plant. The raw materials entered the process is fixed and the products are regulated according to their accumulation. The recycle flowrate of DIPA is adjusted by its quantifier. The temperature loops are designed to reject the thermal disturbance. The first distillation column is controlled using a single temperature and a reflux-to-feed ratio control structure. The second distillation column is controlled using a single temperature and either a reflux-to-feed ratio or reflux ratio control structure. The third column has three alterative control structures which are the same as the second column and dual control structure ratio (one temperature and one composition).

Book excerpt: A structure of most industrial processes, including many different unit operations, several recycle streams and energy integration, is a complex flowsheet. Therefore plantwide control structure design is an important way to control processes which become more complex so that processes are designed and operated closer to constraints. This research is design of plantwide control structures for butyl acetate process, which consist of a reactor, three distillation columns and two recycle streams. It can be produced by the reaction of methyl acetate with butanol in a reversible, liquid-phase, mildly exothermic reaction. Methanol is the second product. The objective of this research is selection of controlled variables so that finding which variables that should be controlled system for quickly responding to disturbances and adjusting self to steady state while minimizing the deviation of the product quality. Plantwide control procedure of Wongsri(2012) is chosen for design the new control structures in order to develop control loops to achieve the required objectives. Steady state designs were performed in commercial process simulator and evaluate the performance using integrated absolute error (IAE) of the designed control structures.

The design control loop would effect the operation significantly. The study is using plantwide control strategies for designing control structure of Isobutane process control. This structure process design is to achieve the efficiency in control and reduce disturbances in process by using the new process structure design by Wongsri (2009) compare to the basic heuristic structure design by Luben (2002). Disturbances are set up by two categories; flow rate of substances and temperature changed in fresh feed. The result shows that control structure designs based on Wongsri heuristic are better performance than Luben in both sustain in quality and minimize the power efficiency. Evaluate such simulation by HYSYS commercial software.

The eight stepsof the design procedure focus on plantwide level designwhich is establishing a fixture plantand thermal and material disturbance managements for quality control. The process involves the reaction of methanol with 2-methyl-1-heptene to form 2-methoxy-2-methylheptane. The flowsheet features a continuous stirred tank reactor, three distillation columns, and one recycle stream. The combined feed of fresh and recycled 2-methyl-1-heptene is regulated and is ratioed to the fresh methanol. 2-methyl-1-heptene disturbance is pushed away via the distillate of the second column and recycled to maintain 2-methoxy-2-methylheptane purity in the third column. All components are handled at their identified quantifiers. The designed plantwide control structure performance is compared with the Luyben's design.

The significance of the procedure is the use of quantifiers and their handlers to design plant level quantifier (inventory) control to stabilize the material flow. Next to maintain the quality of the products, the material and heat disturbance management are used to design for plant level disturbance rejection loops for dynamic efficiency. The column control loops are designed to shift plus and minus disturbance in the desired direction. Then the unit level loop design is carried out. The plant equipped with this designed control structure is called a Fixture Plant. The new design is compared with Luyben's design.

Book excerpt: In general, the production process in all plants do not have single process or have only single unit operation separated from other process but they have several operation units. And due to the restriction of the environment, safety and operating condition, it is very necessary to have the control system to control the condition and compensate for any deviation occurred. The methyl amines process is a complex chemical process with reaction and separation sections connected by several recycle streams. There are three consecutive reversible reactions that produce three different chemical components. In this thesis, the plantwide control strategy is considered for the methyl amines process. Fixture point theorem is applied to the plantwide control structures design for selecting appropriated set of controlled variables. A commercial process simulation software achieves the dynamics simulation of this research, both of steady-state and dynamics conditions.

Book excerpt: There are many comprehensive design books, but none of them provide a significant number of detailed economic design examples of typically complex industrial processes. Most of the current design books cover a wide variety of topics associated with process design. In addition to discussing flowsheet development and equipment design, these textbooks go into a lot of detail on engineering economics and other many peripheral subjects such as written and oral skills, ethics, "green" engineering and product design. This book presents general process design principles in a concise readable form that can be easily comprehended by students and engineers when developing effective flow sheet and control structures. Ten detailed case studies presented illustrate an in-depth and quantitative way the application of these general principles. Detailed economic steady-state designs are developed that satisfy economic criterion such as minimize total annual cost of both capital and energy or return on incremental capital investment. Complete detailed flow sheets and Aspen Plus files are provided. Then conventional PI control structures are be developed and tested for their ability to maintain product quality during disturbances. Complete Aspen Dynamics files are be provided of the dynamic simulations.

Book excerpt: As a mature topic in chemical engineering, the book provides methods, problems and tools used in process control engineering. It discusses: process knowledge, sensor system technology, actuators, communication technology, and logistics, design and construction of control systems and their operation. The knowledge goes beyond the traditional process engineering field by applying the same principles, to biomedical processes, energy production and management of environmental issues. The book explains all the determinations in the "chemical systems" or "process systems", starting from the beginning of the processes, going through the intricate interdependency of the process stages, analyzing the hardware components of a control system and ending with the design of an appropriate control system for a process parameter or a whole process. The book is first addressed to the students and graduates of the departments of Chemical or Process Engineering. Second, to the chemical or process engineers in all industries or research and development centers, because they will notice the resemblance in approach from the system and control point of view, between different fields which might seem far from each other, but share the same control philosophy.
