Book excerpt: Excerpt from Plants and Their Ways in South Africa For several reasons it has seemed desirable to extend the first edition of this book into a second, and in doing so additions have been made, in some cases with considerable reluctance. Not that the first edition was by any means regarded as complete. The book was first written with a view of attracting young eyes to objects of interest in the plant world that could be enjoyed without the use of a compound microscope. In a measure the object was attained, at least sufficiently to show that a microscope was by no means indispensable for students beginning to observe plant life. When contemplating revision, suggestions were asked of young teachers, and some of them seemed to find the lack of a lesson on internal anatomy-one of the disadvantages of the former edition. In order to meet their needs a short lesson on this subject has been added, together with a more extended synopsis of the Natural Orders of South African plants. While these additions appear somewhat as excrescences to the more elementary chapters of the book, the hope is entertained that their usefulness to those for whom they have been written will justify their insertion. It is a pleasure to acknowledge gratefully my indebtedness to those who have aided me in the work of revision. Miss Alette Hugo and Miss Avrylle Bottomley have given valued assistance in pen-and-ink drawings. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For over a century, plant specialists worldwide have sought to transform healing plants in African countries into pharmaceuticals. And for equally as long, conflicts over these medicinal plants have endured, from stolen recipes and toxic tonics to unfulfilled promises of laboratory equipment and usurped personal patents. In Bitter Roots, Abena Dove Osseo-Asare draws on publicly available records and extensive interviews with scientists and healers in Ghana, Madagascar, and South Africa to interpret how African scientists and healers, rural communities, and drug companies—including Pfizer, Bristol-Myers Squibb, and Unilever—have sought since the 1880s to develop drugs from Africa’s medicinal plants. Osseo-Asare recalls the efforts to transform six plants into pharmaceuticals: rosy periwinkle, Asiatic pennywort, grains of paradise, Strophanthus, Cryptolepis, and Hoodia. Through the stories of each plant, she shows that herbal medicine and pharmaceutical chemistry have simultaneous and overlapping histories that cross geographic boundaries. At the same time, Osseo-Asare sheds new light on how various interests have tried to manage the rights to these healing plants and probes the challenges associated with assigning ownership to plants and their biochemical components. A fascinating examination of the history of medicine in colonial and postcolonial Africa, Bitter Roots will be indispensable for scholars of Africa; historians interested in medicine, biochemistry, and society; and policy makers concerned with drug access and patent rights.

Book excerpt: This comprehensively updated and expanded edition of the region’s best-selling field guide to trees offers much, much more than the highly successful first edition. Fully updated text (including additional species entries) and distribution maps, numerous new photographs and a new 87-page section of full-tree photographs makes this well-loved guide even more indispensable in the field. Southern Africa has a rich variety of tree species, with an estimated 2 100 indigenous species and more than 100 naturalised aliens. Field Guide to Trees of Southern Africa describes and illustrates more than 1 000 of these, focusing on trees that are the most common and most likely to be encountered. Species are logically arranged in 43 groups based on easy-to-observe leaf and stem features, and each account is illustrated by full-colour photographs of the plant’s diagnostic parts. The text also touches on the practical uses of the plants.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from South African Flowering Plants For: The Use of Beginners, Students and Teachers The objects of the present book are (1) to enable Beginners in Botany to take some interest in the wild plants of Cape Colony and elsewhere, and to show them how they are to be studied. The number of plants in South Africa is so great that all that can be done is to understand the structure of a certain number only, and the phenomena of their plant life. But to be merely able to distinguish plants by the structure of their flowers, or to know their names, is by no means enough. We require to know, if possible, why their leaves, as well as their flowers, are so different from each other. This leads to the study of their habits in association with their surrounding conditions; and we find that the structures of roots, stems, leaves, etc., are just what is best for the plant, whether it be living in a dry country like South Africa, or in a humid one as England, or entirely in water. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Be forewarned that this book honors people like the woman in my hometown who paints the numbers of her favorite NASCAR drivers on her elephant ears, and a Tokyo gardener with over a hundred bonsai plants.” So says renowned garden journalist Felder Rushing in his new book Maverick Gardeners: Dr. Dirt and Other Determined Independent Gardeners. In this book, Felder delves deeply into the psychology of what motivates and sustains the Keepers of the Garden Flame. For thousands of years, a loosely connected web of unique, nontraditional gardeners has bonded people across race, culture, language, and other social conventions through sharing unique plants and stories. Found in nearly every neighborhood worldwide, these “determined independent gardeners” (DIGrs) are typically nonjoiners who garden simply and exuberantly, eschewing customary horticultural standards in their amateur pursuits of personal bliss. Included in Maverick Gardeners are classic “passalong plant” lists, a dollop of how-to, numerous color photographs, and thought-provoking essays on quintessential tools, sharing with others, getting away with wildflowers in suburbia, and organizing a plant swap. The centerpiece of this unique gardening journey is the no-holds-barred story of a ten-year cross-cultural collaboration between the horticulturist author and a flamboyant rebellious gardener who called himself Dirt. Through swapping plants and garden lore—and rubbing shoulders with fellow DIGrs—they unraveled their shared humanity. From the practical to the inspiring, Maverick Gardeners is the perfect book for those nonconformist souls who see no sense in trying to fit in and follow the footpaths of others.
