Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hybrid pearl millet (Pennisetum glaucum) and forage sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L. Moench.) have the potential of being better alternative and/or substitute to corn silage for north-western Ontario. This report describes research trials carried out on these two crops at sites in Thunder Bay, Rainy River, and Dryden, using several millet & sorghum varieties and a number of different seeding methods. Results are presented with regard to feed quality and to yield at the first & second harvests. Problems with cultivation are noted and management practices in the trials are summarized. Finally, overall performance of these forage crops under northern conditions are discussed along with additional research required.
Book Synopsis Seedbed Preparation of Rhizoma Peanut Living Mulch for Millet and Sorghum by : Elizabeth Erin Casey
Download or read book Seedbed Preparation of Rhizoma Peanut Living Mulch for Millet and Sorghum written by Elizabeth Erin Casey and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study measured effects of seabed preparation methods of rhizoma peanut (Arachis glabrata Benth.: RP) living mulch on weed suppression, grain yield, and herbage biomass yield in pearl millet (Pennisetum glaucum (L.) R. Br.) and grain sorghum (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench.) at two planting dates (T1, T2). Weed mass was greatest (P [less than or equal to] 0.05) under tillage across cereal treatments at T1. Mowing lead to approximately 200% greater (P [less than or equal to] 0.05) RP reemergence than tilling during the 2013 cereal production season. Tilling, however, fostered the greatest 2014 RP reemergence, grain yields and biomass yields at T2. These yields were less than comparable conventional systems, however, which indicated low cereal crop grain and biomass yields requiring further research of RP as a living mulch.
Book Synopsis Effects of Planting Practices and Nitrogen Management on Grain Sorghum Production by : Alassane Maiga

This book was released on 2012 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench] is a relatively drought- and heat-tolerant cereal crop. Global demand and consumption of agricultural crops for food, feed, and fuel is increasing at a rapid pace. To satisfy the growing worldwide demand for grain, production practices must be well optimized and managed. The objectives of the present study were: to optimize sorghum production by determining the best management practices (planting date, row spacing, seeding rate, hybrid maturity) for growth and yield, to evaluate the agronomic responsiveness of grain sorghum genotypes to nitrogen (N) fertilizer and to develop a partial financial budget to N fertilizer application based on best management practices. In order to meet these objectives, field experiments were conducted in 2009, 2010 and 2011 at Manhattan, Belleville, Ottawa, Hutchinson, Hays, at KSU Experiment Stations and Salina, and Randolph at Private Farms. Results indicated that early planting date (late May) and narrow row spacing (25 cm) providing the most equidistant spacing, produced better plant growth, light interception, yield components (number of grains per panicle, 300-grain weight), and biological yield. Results indicated that with increasing N rate, there was a proportional increase in chlorophyll SPAD meter reading, leaf color scores and number of green leaves. There was a significant difference among hybrids for N uptake, NUE and grain yield. However, there was no effect of N and no interaction between N and hybrid on grain yield. Over all, the genotypes with high NUE also had higher grain yield. Economic analysis using partial budget indicated that all N levels had positive gross benefit greater than control at all locations. However, the response varied across locations. Our research has shown that sorghum responds to changing management practices and opportunities exist to increase grain yield by optimizing planting date, seeding rate, row spacing, N application and selection of genotypes.

This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite declining water availability in the semi-arid southern High Plains, demand for high-quality forages by the livestock and dairy industries continues to grow. Alternative forage crops with high water use efficiencies should be explored to meet this demand. Grass-legume intercrops may improve the nutritive value of the forage product, but viable intercrops must maintain yield levels. The purpose of this study was to evaluate forage sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench]-cowpea [Vigna unguiculate (L.) Walp] and pearl millet [Pennisetum glaucum (L.) Leeke]-cowpea intercrops for forage production and quality. Four planting arrangements per grass species were included in the 2020 and 2021 growing seasons to evaluate forage production of sorghum-cowpea and pearl millet-cowpea intercrops under limited irrigation. Treatments were sole pearl millet, sole forage sorghum, sole cowpea, or mixtures of either pearl millet-cowpea or forage sorghum-cowpea planted in the same row, alternating rows (millet-cowpea 1:1 or sorghum-cowpea 1:1), or two rows alternating (millet-cowpea 2:2 or sorghum-cowpea 2:2). Intercrop biomass yields ranged from 11.6 to 16.2 Mg ha-1 in 2020 and from 7.2 to 12.4 Mg ha-1 in 2021. Results from both study years indicate that the studied intercrops are able to maintain yield, quality, and WUE levels similar to sole pearl millet and forage sorghum.

This book was released on 2018 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As water levels in the Ogallala Aquifer continue to decline in the Texas High Plains, alternative forage crops that utilize less water must be identified to help meet the forage demands of the livestock industry in the region. The purpose of this two year study was to evaluate forage sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench] and pearl millet [Pennisetum glaucum (L.) Leeke] for forage production and quality. Three different harvesting regimes were implemented to evaluate forage productivity and regrowth of both crops throughout the 2016 and 2017 growing seasons. These different regimes included: three 30 day, two 45 day, and one 90 day harvest. Pearl millet and forage sorghum total dry matter production in 2016 ranged from 3.96 to 6.28 Mg DM ha−1 and 5.38 to 11.19 Mg DM ha−1 and in 2017 ranged from 6.00 to 9.87 Mg DM ha−1 and 6.53 to 15.51 Mg DM ha−1, respectively. A 90 d harvest in the Texas High Plains will maximize water use efficiency and DM production; however, some forage quality may be sacrificed.
Book Synopsis Millets and Sorghum by : Jagannath V. Patil

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Millets and sorghum are extremely important crops in many developing nations and because of the ability of many of them to thrive in low-moisture situations they represent some exciting opportunities for further development to address the continuing and increasing impact of global temperature increase on the sustainability of the world’s food crops. The main focus of this thorough new book is the potential for crop improvement through new and traditional methods, with the book’s main chapters covering the following crops: sorghum, pearl millet, finger millet, foxtail milet, proso millet, little millet, barnyard millet, kodo millet, tef and fonio. Further chapters cover pests and diseases, nutritional and industrial importance, novel tools for improvement, and seed systems in millets. Millets and Sorghum provides full and comprehensive coverage of these crucially important crops, their biology, world status and potential for improvement, and is an essential purchase for crop and plant scientists, and food scientists and technologists throughout the developed and developing world. All libraries in universities and research establishment where biological and agricultural sciences are studied and taught should have copies of this important book on their shelves.
