Ultimately, the idea of cultivating peace embodies love and compassion, while utilising local knowledge, expertise and wisdom to do no harm. Using various case studies from across the world, the narratives and insights in this book present diverse facets of peacebuilding, yet all contribute constructive lessons. The chapters cover three general themes. Some examine the structural and discursive causes of violence and how to improve situations where violence is evident, or to prevent it from breaking out. Others deal with the aftermath of violence and how to reconcile and restore shattered lives and societies. The third group deals with positive social change by nonviolent means, which is much more constructive than the “negative peace” of ceasefires and peace enforcement used to manage direct violence. Promoting the ideal of peace cultivation, this volume emphasises ways to improve things, to suggest alternatives, and to employ initiatives to plant and grow positive changes both during the fighting and in the aftermath of violent conflicts.

The literature on the subject indicates that effective land tenure environments can be used as peace-building initiatives in post-conflict societies by addressing the issues leading to land tenure conflict. The land tenure environment has been found to be made up of issues related to access to land, land administration systems and tenure security. The first step towards exploring programs aimed at improving access to land for landless populations have driven former beneficiaries back to the conditions and situations that created conflict in the first place. Land administration institutions are weak and inefficient, often registering land improperly, causing disagreements on land ownership. Land tenure insecurity is encouraged through weak land rights and the mechanisms in place to make claims over land. Quantitative analysis of the land tenure environment seems to confirm their negative effect on Conflict in Brazil. In this case, the land tenure environment has been ineffective as a peace-building tool in post-conflict communities.

Coincidentally, world market conditions for coffee were becoming increasingly unfavourable. The combination of these factors brought a swift end to coffee cultivation in the British crown colony and pushed the island into a severe economic crisis. When Ceylon re-emerged from this crisis only a decade later, its economy had been thoroughly transformed and now rested on the large-scale cultivation of tea. This book uses the unprecedented intensity and swiftness of this process to highlight the socioeconomic interconnections and dependencies in tropical export economies in the late nineteenth century and it shows how dramatically Ceylonese society was affected by the economic transformation.
