Book excerpt: Excerpt from Illustrated Catalogue and Price-List of Grafted, Budded and Seedling Paper-Shell Pecans and Other Nut-Bearing Trees, 1904, Vol. 2: With Which Is Incorporated a Treatise on Pecan Culture Pecan is probably destined to become the leading nut of the American market and that If its culture is pushed with the usual skill and energy of American enterprise, there is every reason to believe that it will not be many years before the Pecan will become not only an abundant nut in our markets, but also an im portant article of export. Reference was, of course, made to the large thin shelled nut. In the season of 1903 - 04 we shipped Pecan trees to twenty States, including Indian Territory. Book excerpt: Written in a manner suitable for a popular audience and including color photographs and recipes for some common uses of the nut, Pecan: America’s Native Nut Tree gathers scientific, historical, and anecdotal information to present a comprehensive view of the largely unknown story of the pecan. From the first written record of it made by the Spaniard Cabeza de Vaca in 1528 to its nineteenth-century domestication and its current development into a multimillion dollar crop, the pecan tree has been broadly appreciated for its nutritious nuts and its beautiful wood. In Pecan: America’s Native Nut Tree, Lenny Wells explores the rich and fascinating story of one of North America’s few native crops, long an iconic staple of southern foods and landscapes. Fueled largely by a booming international interest in the pecan, new discoveries about the remarkable health benefits of the nut, and a renewed enthusiasm for the crop in the United States, the pecan is currently experiencing a renaissance with the revitalization of America’s pecan industry. The crop’s transformation into a vital component of the US agricultural economy has taken many surprising and serendipitous twists along the way. Following the ravages of cotton farming, the pecan tree and its orchard ecosystem helped to heal the rural southern landscape. Today, pecan production offers a unique form of agriculture that can enhance biodiversity and protect the soil in a sustainable and productive manner. Among the many colorful anecdotes that make the book fascinating reading are the story of André Pénicaut’s introduction of the pecan to Europe, the development of a Latin name based on historical descriptions of the same plant over time, the use of explosives in planting orchard trees, the accidental discovery of zinc as an important micronutrient, and the birth of “kudzu clubs” in the 1940s promoting the weed as a cover crop in pecan orchards. **Published in cooperation with the Samuel Roberts Noble Foundation, Ellis Brothers Pecan, Inc., and The Mason Pecans Group**

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Catalogue of Georgia Paper Shell Pecan Trees, 1901 Considerable attention has been given, 3 popularity. During the last few years, to the planting and cultivation of Pecans throughout the South and Southwest. When its merits are more generally known, and appreciated, more trees will be planted, and at no distant date the Pecan groves throughout the South, and in many parts of the North and West, will be more popular and more profitable than were once the orange groves of Florida. The Pecan and Hickory are of the same regarmng the family, and in the same soil and under the tree same climatic conditions, where one thrives so will the other. They are found in their wild state, scattered from the Gulf to the Lakes and from the Atlantic to the Pacific. Like the Hickory, the Pecan grows to an enormous size, often measuring from two to three feet in diameter, and is one of the handsomest of shade trees having a large spread with very dense foliage of a dark, rich green. There is a great difference in the quality hegard'ng the and market value'of the nuts from differ nut. Ent sections and from different trees. Some are small, thick-shelled and of poor quality. In planting groves, trees grown from these nuts should be carefully avoided. The best varieties produce nuts that are very large, with thin, brittle shells and delicious flavor. These varieties also come into bearing in a much shorter time than the ordinary kinds and grow much more rapidly.
