Book excerpt: From 1977-84, over 10 million seedlings were shipped to private woodlot owners for the reforestation of cutovers, abandoned fields, and other non-regenerating or poorly stocked lands in Nova Scotia. In November 1985, a survey was conducted of selected plantations established on these woodlots. Plantation records were utilized to determine the location and background for each plantation sampled, then plots were established, located at predetermined, equal intervals along parallel and equally spaced cruise lines in each plantation. Planted trees were categorized as healthy, unhealthy or dead and vegetative competition for each planted tree was noted as either light, moderate or severe. The percentage stocking for plantations was determined for planted trees to total area; planted trees to plantable area; natural regeneration to total area; and planted trees plus natural regeneration to total area.

Book Synopsis Gender assessment in plantation forestry in Uganda by : Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations
Download or read book Gender assessment in plantation forestry in Uganda written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2022-08-18 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women play a vital role in forestry, but their contributions are not fully realized due to existing gender inequalities. The policy environment for addressing gender equality in Uganda has improved in recent decades, but women continue to be disadvantaged by insecure property rights and by limited access to forests, trees and land resources. Women also suffer from discrimination and bias in the provision of services, including credit and technology, and are often excluded from decision-making at household, community and national levels. Gender mainstreaming and women empowerment were therefore core aspects of the Sawlog Production Grant Scheme Phase III (SPGS III). FAO, on behalf of the Government of Uganda, is implementing the SPGS III project. The project aims at increasing the incomes of the rural population through commercial tree planting by small, medium, and large-scale private sector actors and the local communities, while at the same time helping to mitigate climate change effects through intensive afforestation. Empowering women in forestry can create significant development opportunities and generate important additional benefits for their households and communities. Therefore, FAO conducted a study to assess status of gender equality and women empowerment in plantation forestry in Uganda and make recommendations on how to better integrate gender equality in commercial forestry.

Download or read book Plantations Privatization Poverty and Power written by Michael Garforth and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2013-06-17 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Private sector delivery of state services is increasingly common worldwide, and state forest plantation management is no exception. Increasingly governments are transferring rights and responsibilities to the private sector for state-owned plantations. Some claim that this is the road to achieving sustainable forest management, greater contributions to local livelihoods and poverty reduction, others disagree. This book examines the evidence and explores the many issues raised by these changing relationships between the state, the private sector and local livelihoods. Experiences from around the world are described through seven case studies from Australia, China, Chile, India, New Zealand, South Africa and the United Kingdom, and key lessons and clear guidance are provided on how governments can best achieve a balance between private and public involvement while continuing to deliver the key social goods and services expected by all citizens.

Book excerpt: Based on thorough bibliographic research of a highly controversial topic, this report, jointly sponsored by IUCN, UNEP and WWF, shows the potential of plantations, while also exposing problems which may arise if massive tree plantations proposed for the tropics are to be established. Major issues covered include; species selection, soil and water cycle effects, fires, pests and diseases, effects on biodiversity, carbon dioxide fixation, land tenure and social issues, and plantation economics. Some broad conclusions and guidelines to be considered when establishing large scale plantations in the tropics complete this study.

These illustrate, for example, the effects of changes in public harvest policies, variations in investments in silviculture, and globalization. It is aimed at policy makers, researchers and graduate students who are building or using forest sector models.

Book Synopsis Agricultural investments in Mozambique: An analysis of investment trends, business models and social and environmental conduct by : Filipe Di Matteo
Download or read book Agricultural investments in Mozambique: An analysis of investment trends, business models and social and environmental conduct written by Filipe Di Matteo and published by CIFOR. This book was released on 2016-04-18 with total page 75 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The recent influx of agricultural investment to Africa is increasingly equated with land grabbing by investors from emerging and Northern economies seeking to produce commodities to serve the needs of their own food and energy markets. This paper reflects on this discourse by unpacking agricultural investments in Mozambique – one of the largest recipients of agricultural investment in Africa. By drawing on official investment data and structured interviews conducted with 69 agricultural investors in Mozambique, this paper analyzes agricultural investment trends, characteristics and the factors that shape investors’ social and environmental conduct. It illustrates that, contrary to popular depiction, regional investors, domestic food end-markets, and private finance are the primary drivers of investment. Moreover, this paper shows that investors differ significantly in the types of strategies, business models and practices they adopt. The findings highlight a lack of nuance in the global agricultural investment discourse and the need for more evidence-based policy intervention in order to adequately leverage the potential of agricultural investments to contribute to inclusive green growth.
