Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The extreme right wing is on the rise. And there are signs that part of the political mainstream in Europe, the US, and beyond is considering going along with far-right populist parties and their divisive, ethno-nationalist programmes. Europe at the Crossroads is an urgent scholarly response to the sociopolitical challenges that far-right programmes pose to the idea of a more egalitarian world. It offers an interdisciplinary explanation and critique of the dynamics of the far right in Europe – from Poland to the UK, from Sweden to Greece. The authors present immediate alternatives when tackling the exclusionary rhetoric and the politics of resentment. In formulating alternatives for a ‘social Europe’, each contributor critically assesses the current advance of far- right populism and the threat to liberal democracy since the global financial crisis of 2008 and the European refugee movement of 2015. Each chapter addresses the historical roots and normalization of the extreme right, whether Orbanism in Central and Eastern Europe since 2014, the Brexit campaign and referendum in the UK in 2016. As the slogan ‘Fortress Europe’ – once a pejorative term – now appeals to large numbers of voters, the authors also analyse the flash points in the run-up to the European Parliament elections in May 2019.

What teaching methods are there? Due to the lack of comprehensive (university) didactic training, teachers too often have to answer these and many other questions for themselves. This book is intended to counteract this and presents practical tips on good university teaching for all disciplines based on the current state of research.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook explores the use of simulation within the context of education and internationalization. Simulation is broken down into its phases and these elements are discussed by experts, most of whom have long tradition in the application of simulation. Simulation is treated with references to the specific needs of practitioners, educators and researchers in initiating and developing simulation in different fields of study, with specific reference to teacher education. This volume focuses on presenting simulation as a means to facilitating students’ openness to complexity and development of intercultural skills through virtual exchange. Thus, it provides educators and researchers with a conceptual and practical resource that tackles the critical role of cognitive and metacognitive complexity in the education of future global professionals through intercultural pedagogy. By tracing the roots of simulation and outlining a framework to support professional learning through experiential-based research, this textbook will prove invaluable for teacher trainers, practitioners and researchers interested in simulation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book fills an important gap in the literature, and presents contributions from scientists and researchers working in the field of sustainable development who have engaged in dynamic approaches to implementing sustainability in higher education. It is widely known that universities are key players in terms of the implementation and further development of sustainability, with some having the potential of acting as “living labs” in this rapidly growing field. Yet there are virtually no publications that explore the living labs concept as it relates to sustainability, and in an integrated manner. The aims of this book, which is an outcome of the “4th World Symposium on Sustainable Development at Universities” (WSSD-U-2018), held in Malaysia in 2018, are as follows: i. to document the experiences of universities from all around the world in curriculum innovation, research, activities and practical projects as they relate to sustainable development at the university level; ii. to disseminate information, ideas and experiences acquired in the execution of projects, including successful initiatives and good practice; iii. to introduce and discuss methodological approaches and projects that seek to integrate the topic of sustainable development in the curricula of universities; and iv. to promote the scalability of existing and future models from universities as living labs for sustainable development. The papers are innovative, cross-cutting and many reflect practice-based experiences, some of which may be replicable elsewhere. Also, this book, prepared by the Inter-University Sustainable Development Research Programme (IUSDRP) and the World Sustainable Development Research and Transfer Centre (WSD-RTC), reinforces the role played by universities as living labs for sustainable development.
