Book excerpt: In the tradition of landscape architecture, the members of the New England Greenway Vision Plan and the American Society of Landscape Architects believe that the time has arrrived to "make the connections" among the thousands of parks and open spaces in New England to create the first multi-state, regional greenway network. It would create a cohesive network for the 43 million acres of New England including Maine, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Connecticut. The plan builds on existing and proposed greenways in all six states and identifies the critical linkages that will make a New England system. Site shows maps and vision plans for each state.

Book Synopsis Planning at the Landscape Scale by : Paul Selman
Download or read book Planning at the Landscape Scale written by Paul Selman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2006-11-22 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traditionally, landscape planning has involved the designation and protection of exceptional countryside. However, whilst this still remains important, there is a growing recognition of the multi-functionality of rural areas, and the need to encourage sustainable use of the whole countryside rather than just its ‘hotspots’. With an inter-disciplinary assessment of the rural environment, this book draws on theories of landscape values, people-place relationships, sustainable development, and plan implementation. It focuses on the competing influences of globalization and localization, seeing the role of planning as the reconciliation of these conflicting demands, reinforcing character and distinctiveness without museum-izing rural areas. Taking a ‘landscape scale’ approach to the topic, this book responds to the interest sparked by concern for rural landscapes and by recent local and national policy shifts in this area.

Book Synopsis Revitalizing Urban Waterway Communities by : Richard Smardon
Download or read book Revitalizing Urban Waterway Communities written by Richard Smardon and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-06-14 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The revitalizing and restoration of rivers, creeks and streams is a major focus of urban conservation activity throughout North America and Europe. This book presents models and examples for organizing multiple stakeholders for purposes of waterway revitalization—if not restoration—within a context of fairness and environmental justice. After decades of neglect and misuse the challenge of cleaning up urban rivers and streams is shown to be complex and truly daunting. Urban river cleanup typically involves multiple agendas and stakeholders, as well as complicated technical issues. It is also often the situation that the most affected have the least voice in what happens. The authors present social process models for maximum inclusion of various stakeholders in decision-making for urban waterway regeneration. A range of examples is presented, drawn principally from North America and Europe.
