Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 6th edition of this established text is streamlined to a more manageable format, with the Appendices moved to the web-site and a significant shortening of the main text. There is a greater focus on the global analysis of industry and competition; and analysis of the internal environment. In consultation with feedback from their adopters, the authors have concentrated on the fundamentals of strategy analysis and the underlying sources of profit. This reflects waning interest among senior executives in the pursuit of short-term shareholder value. As ever students are provided with the guidance they need to strategic planning, analysis of the health services environment (internal and external) and lessons on implementation; with additional discussionssion of organizational capability, deeper treatment of sustainability and corporate social responsibility and more coverageof the sources of organizational inertia and competency traps. This edition is rich in new examples from real-world health care organizations. Chapters are brought to life by the 'Introductory Incidents', 'Learning Objectives', 'Perspectives', 'Strategy Capsules', useful chapter summaries; and questions for class discussion. All cases and examples have been updated or replaced. In this edition the teaching materials and web supplements have been greatly enhanced, with power-point slides, to give lecturers a unique resource.

Book excerpt: HMO landlords provide low-cost flexible housing desperately needed by society, often to vulnerable tenants. However, they are rarely given help or support by the authorities, and the law is often vigorously enforced against them. Little is said about the damage some tenants cause to property, problems with rent arrears and eviction of bad tenants. This book is for the brave souls who dare to provide HMO housing and need a guide to the system. It shows you how to stand up to councils that try to stop you providing good quality HMO accommodation. If you stand up to the planners, you will be surprised how rarely they will follow through and how often they will lose. Seeing that they were getting a raw deal, he founded Just Planning, a consultancy dedicated to helping homeowners to beat the planners. How to Get Planning Permission is a lively and accessible guide for homeowners. Full of practical detail and real-life case studies, its 6-step programme explains how to: - choose the right designer - exploit Permitted Development rights (where permission is not required at all) - understand how planning decisions are really made - apply tactically and effectively - deal with a refusal - avoid the agony of enforcement Martin explains how to decide, in the first instance, what kind of extension you really need (size isn’t everything) and how to get the best professional advice. He describes the planning decision making process – how to understand, apply and overcome planning policies, how to manage neighbour objections and how to build rapport with your case officer. A refusal of planning permission is not the end of the road – this book shows that it can be a constructive part of the planning journey and some permissions will only ever be secured at appeal. Planning is not a fair fight, but with the professional insight, advice and strategies Martin lays out in How to Get Planning Permission you can stack the odds in your favour.

Book Synopsis Politics and Health Care Organization by : Lawrence Brown
Download or read book Politics and Health Care Organization written by Lawrence Brown and published by Brookings Institution Press. This book was released on 2010-12-01 with total page 564 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among various health cost containment strategies proposed during the 1970s, none has held more sustained fascination than the health maintenance organization (HMO). For many years, policy analysts in search of market- and incentive-based alternatives to “command and control” regulation have argued that medical groups combining prepayment and group practice, and offering comprehensive medical services within a fixed budget, would hold down costs both by their own efficient operations and by the competitive pressures they would apply to the conventional systems. During the 1970s, three presidents and five Congresses worked to formulate and implement legislation to increase the HMO presence nationwide, with very modest results. Some observers concluded that but for the well-intended but counterproductive efforts of the federal government, HMOs might thrive. Indeed, the Reagan administration has called for an end to direct federal financial involvement in building HMOs—though it has also promised legislation to promote HMOs and a newly competitive health care system based on revamped financial incentives and reinvigorated markets. In this book, Lawrence D. Brown, a senior fellow in the Brookings Governmental Studies program, examines the interplay between politics and policy in the federal HMO development effort between 1970 and 1980. He argues that the basic explanation for the disappointments of the policy analysts and federal supporters of HMOs lies not in a political miscarriage but in the overambitious promises of the policy strategy itself. Tracing the poor fit between policy and politics revealed by federal efforts to translate the attractive HMO idea into a workable strategy, Brown concludes that the episode augurs poorly for the competitive reforms frequently offered as a nonregulatory solution to rising health care costs in the 1980s.
