Book Synopsis Biosafety in Industrial Biotechnology by : P. Hambleton
Download or read book Biosafety in Industrial Biotechnology written by P. Hambleton and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As an industry, biotechnology may be likened to the Hymn Book, being both ancient and modern. Whereas activities such as baking, brewing, the fermenting of foods date from our earliest attempts to control and utilise the environment, the application of recombinant DNA technology is recognised as being at the forefront of novel industrial development. Perhaps because of its association with processing foodstuffs together with the benefits derived from applications in the early organic chemistry and pharmaceutical industries, biotechnology has been regarded as being inherently safe. Yet unlike other modern industries, such as chemical and nuclear, where regulation has followed from incidents or accidents, modern biotechnology has been subject to close scrutiny and regulation almost from its inception. The process of regulation itself is somewhat unusual in that it was initially self-imposed by the very scientists who developed the fundamental techniques of recombinant DNA technology. They recognised the signific ance of their development but were concerned of the effects on humans and the environment of uncontrolled application of the new, powerful technology. Concern about the possible consequences of genetic manipula tion has undoubtedly been the driving force behind the regulations that are now in place in many parts of the world and which are the subject of this book. Safety issues in the biotechnology industry can be categorised under three headings: worker, environmental and consumer (product) safety.

Book excerpt: Here are portraits of three very different Victorian women, all of whom married men of exceptional talent, energy and genius. To be the wife of such frenetic, explosive characters as David Livingstone, Karl Marx or Charles Darwin, especially at this period in history, demanded rare qualities. Yet the late twentieth-century view of these women is perhaps best summed up in the frequently heard comment: 'I didn't know he had a wife.' The mid-nineteenth century was a time of unprecedented movement and upheaval. The revolutions of 1848 set Europe ablaze and sent swarms of political dissidents to seek freedom outside their homelands. Britain and her Empire were ruled by a young Queen Victoria, inspired by her enterprising, vigorous consort, Albert; it was a climate in which invention and discovery were encouraged. Men were creating new frontiers, both geographically and intellectually, and where they went their wives and families accompanied them.

Book Synopsis Towards a Federal Europe by : Alexander H. Trechsel
Download or read book Towards a Federal Europe written by Alexander H. Trechsel and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-09-13 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An excellent new analysis of federalism and the EU that investigates their mutual impact. It shows how scholars of comparative politics increasingly include the EU among their cases when investigating the impact of federalism on key issues such as policy making. The last decade saw a new wave of scholarly publications hit the shores as research on federalism and on the EU came together. These emerging strands of research genuinely enrich our understanding of the EU and its politics. Despite this recent wave, the topic of federalism and the EU is still extremely fruitful. This volume contributes to the continuing debate at a moment in time when the EU is undergoing profound changes. It is structured around four interrelated dimensions: the constitutional/theoretical dimension the institutional vision the party/citizens dimension the policy dimension. This structure allows the reader to consecutively "funnel down" from the more theoretical and abstract levels to the more concrete policy oriented level.

Download or read book Judges written by David Pannick and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Judges do not have an easy job. They repeatedly do what the rest of us seek to avoid: make decisions." On that deceptively sympathetic note, David Pannick introduces his critical and irreverent inquiry into what Jeremy Bentham described as 'Judge & Co.' How are judges appointed, trained, disciplined, criticized, mysticized and publicized? What changes are needed in this important, but hitherto neglected, area of government? As Oliver Wendell Holmes suggested, these questions need to be washed with cynical acid. The English judge is a unique phenomenon. He rarely gives interviews or appears on television or writes about his job. He does not respond to public criticism. Judges are still expected to obey a standard of conduct that Churchill understood, in the 1950s, to prohibit the Lord Chief Justice from owning a racehorse. David Pannick warns all those tempted to enter a courtroom of the dangers that lie therein. He compares English practice to American courts and finds the American system in some respects superior. However, the English judge is usually careful to avoid the excesses of his colleagues on the American bench. The quality of those who sit in judgment in the United Kingdom has never been higher. They have nothing to fear - and everything to gain - from wider public appreciation of their merits and discussion of where there may be room for improvement. So long as men and women continue to wound, cheat, and damage each other, there will be a need for judges to resolve disputes in an orderly manner. This is a highly enjoyable survey of the bizarre manner in which some judges have performed their duties.
