Book excerpt: Magique: The Otherland Chronicles By: John Helgeson What is to become of two societies at odds, one ruled by magic, the other by chaos? The people of Magique believe their existence is perfect, but the Nons of Otherland have news for them: their rule is at an end. For centuries the Nons have been exploited, mistreated, many tortured at the hands of the glamorous, lazy citizens of Magique. After all, the Nons have no value for they have no magic, but Magique is soon introduced to a Non who is also immune to the effects of magic, and their world begins to change at his declaration. This Non demands Magique return to the chaotic life of Otherland, a sentient region of the planet, a part of the planet that wants nothing but chaos, where life is indeterminate, uncertain, and destructive, just as Magique was in its early days. Eventually Otherland has to be controlled for the sake of the very planet’s existence, and when the true history of Magique is revealed, enemies must navigate beyond old beliefs and biases and unite to make hope possible and forge a new beginning for everyone. Come enjoy the vivid world of Magique: The Otherland Chronicles and join the journey.

Book excerpt: Chaos theory deals with the description of motion (in a general sense) which cannot be predicted in the long term although produced by deterministic system, as well exemplified by meteorological phenomena. It directly comes from the Lunar theory — a three-body problem — and the difficulty encountered by astronomers to accurately predict the long-term evolution of the Moon using “Newtonian” mechanics. Henri Poincaré's deep intuitions were at the origin of chaos theory. They also led the meteorologist Edward Lorenz to draw the first chaotic attractor ever published. But the main idea consists of plotting a curve representative of the system evolution rather than finding an analytical solution as commonly done in classical mechanics. Such a novel approach allows the description of population interactions and the solar activity as well. Using the original sources, the book draws on the history of the concepts underlying chaos theory from the 17th century to the last decade, and by various examples, show how general is this theory in a wide range of applications: meteorology, chemistry, populations, astrophysics, biomedicine, etc.

Book excerpt: In the perspective-altering tradition of Malcolm Gladwell’s The Tipping Point and Nassim Nicholas Taleb’s The Black Swan comes a provocative challenge to how we think our world works—and why small, chance events can divert our lives and change everything, by social scientist and Atlantic writer Brian Klaas. If you could rewind your life to the very beginning and then press play, would everything turn out the same? Or could making an accidental phone call or missing an exit off the highway change not just your life, but history itself? And would you remain blind to the radically different possible world you unknowingly left behind? In Fluke, myth-shattering social scientist Brian Klaas dives deeply into the phenomenon of random chance and the chaos it can sow, taking aim at most people’s neat and tidy storybook version of reality. The book’s argument is that we willfully ignore a bewildering truth: but for a few small changes, our lives—and our societies—could be radically different. Offering an entirely new lens, Fluke explores how our world really works, driven by strange interactions and apparently random events. How did one couple’s vacation cause 100,000 people to die? Does our decision to hit the snooze button in the morning radically alter the trajectory of our lives? And has the evolution of humans been inevitable, or are we simply the product of a series of freak accidents? Drawing on social science, chaos theory, history, evolutionary biology, and philosophy, Klaas provides a brilliantly fresh look at why things happen—all while providing mind-bending lessons on how we can live smarter, be happier, and lead more fulfilling lives.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sadly, western civilization has seemingly lost its sense of Christian identity and heritage. In recent decades, humanity has become so indoctrinated by the atheistic paradigm that our matrix is controlled by corporate greed and competition rather than cooperation and compassion. While reflecting on a world that is ever changing, Patrick Mooney shares essays that explore the effect of atheism on a variety of topics that include sexuality, the most binary aspect of humanity that is love, the courage of conviction, endowments and the elite as it relates to education, the reality of death, an inner-city Dublin schoolmistress, and much more. Throughout his writings, Mooney reminds us that although the modern world has brought us to a moral impasse, it is possible to adopt the spirituality that Christ preached, embrace our destiny to be spiritual, and refine our higher selves to search for and find meaning and divine purpose in our lives. The Actualization of Self-Transcendence is a collection of personal essays that shares a priest’s candid reflections on the effects of the atheistic paradigm on the modern world.

It provides an overview from classical astronomy and observational methods to solar physics and astrophysics of stars and galaxies. It concludes with chapters on cosmology, astrobiology, and mathematical and numerical methods. Numerous color illustrations, examples of calculations, and exercises with solutions make this work a useful companion to undergraduate astronomy lectures. The book is suitable for students of physics and astronomy at teacher training level or in the Bachelor's degree - but also people interested in natural sciences with appropriate basic knowledge of mathematics and physics will find here an appealing introduction to the subject. This fourth edition has been updated and revised with respect to the latest developments in astronomy. The chapter on mathematical methods has been redesigned and the software used is now exclusively Python. From the contents: Spherical astronomy - History of astronomy - Celestial mechanics - Astronomical instruments - Physics of the bodies of the solar system - The Sun - State variables of the stars - Stellar atmospheres - Stellar structure - Stellar evolution - Interstellar matter - The Galaxy - Extragalactic systems - Cosmology - Astrobiology - Mathematical methods. This book is a translation of the original German 4th edition Einführung in Astronomie und Astrophysik by Arnold Hanslmeier, published by Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature in 2020. The translation was done with the help of artificial intelligence (machine translation by the service DeepL.com). Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The revolutionary discovery of thousands of confirmed and candidate planets beyond the solar system brings forth the most fundamental question: How do planets and their host stars form and evolve? Protostars and Planets VI brings together more than 250 contributing authors at the forefront of their field, conveying the latest results in this research area and establishing a new foundation for advancing our understanding of stellar and planetary formation. Continuing the tradition of the Protostars and Planets series, this latest volume uniquely integrates the cross-disciplinary aspects of this broad field. Covering an extremely wide range of scales, from the formation of large clouds in our Milky Way galaxy down to small chondrules in our solar system, Protostars and Planets VI takes an encompassing view with the goal of not only highlighting what we know but, most importantly, emphasizing the frontiers of what we do not know. As a vehicle for propelling forward new discoveries on stars, planets, and their origins, this latest volume in the Space Science Series is an indispensable resource for both current scientists and new students in astronomy, astrophysics, planetary science, and the study of meteorites.
