Book excerpt: Abstract: An accurate and reasonable technique combining direct absorption spectroscopy and laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) methods is developed to quantitatively measure the concentrations of hydroxyl in CH4 /air flat laminar flame. In our approach, particular attention is paid to the linear laser-induced fluorescence and absorption processes, and experimental details as well. Through measuring the temperature, LIF signal distribution and integrated absorption, spatially absolute OH concentrations profiles are successfully resolved. These experimental results are then compared with the numerical simulation. It is proved that the good quality of the results implies that this method is suitable for calibrating the OH-PLIF measurement in a practical combustor.

Book excerpt: Two laser-based measurement techniques are implemented in a direct-connect hydrocarbon-fueled scramjet combustor. Planar laser-induced fluorescence (PLIF) of the OH radical is used to examine the flame structure within the combustor. Tunable diode laser-based absorption spectroscopy (TDLAS) is used to measure water vapor concentration and static temperature near the combustor exit. Combined with conventional measurements and Reynolds-averaged CFD simulations, these optical diagnostic techniques significantly enhance the information that is obtained from the scramjet combustor. Wall pressure data show the combustor to be operating in dual-mode with two regions of elevated pressure corresponding to the primary and secondary flameholding zones. The OH radical is well-distributed across the combustor with high OH concentrations occurring along the body, side, and cowl walls. TDLAS measurements indicate non-uniform body-to-cowl profiles in both temperature and water concentration. Near-wall regions are found to be the hottest while the core region is cooler.

Book excerpt: Planar laser induced fluorescence (PLIF) is used by the Combustion Branch at the NASA Glenn Research Center (NASA Glenn) to assess the characteristics of the flowfield produced by aircraft fuel injectors. To improve and expand the capabilities of the PLIF system new equipment was installed. The new capabilities of the modified PLIF system are assessed by collecting OH PLIF in a methane/air flame produced by a flat flame burner. Specifically, the modifications characterized are the addition of an injection seeder to a Nd: YAG laser pumping an optical parametric oscillator (OPO) and the use of a new camera with an interline CCD. OH fluorescence results using the injection seeded OPO laser are compared to results using a Nd: YAG pumped dye laser with ultraviolet extender (UVX). Best settings of the new camera for maximum detection of PLIF signal are reported for the controller gain and microchannel plate (MCP) bracket pulsing. Results are also reported from tests of the Dual Image Feature (DIF) mode of the new camera which allows image pairs to be acquired in rapid succession. This allows acquisition of a PLIF image and a background signal almost simultaneously. Saturation effects in the new camera were also investigated and are reporte

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The application of laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) to measurement of absolute concentration of hydroxyl radicals in cold atmospheric discharges is described. Though only the case of OH is presented, the method can be directly applied to other molecules as well. Starting from the rate equations for the LIF process, the main formulas for two- and multi-level excitation scheme are derived. It is also shown how to use partially saturated LIF in practice, enhancing the signal-to-noise ratio. Practical tips for automating the data evaluation are given, allowing processing large data sets, particularly suitable for planar measurements. Gas temperature estimation from fluorescence on different rotational absorption lines is shown as an attractive method for obtaining temperature maps with high spatial resolution. The important aspects of calibration are discussed, particularly the overlap of the laser line with the selected absorption line and the measurement of the Rayleigh scattering for sensitivity calibration, together with the common sources of errors. The application of OH(A, v' = 0 ← X, v" = 0) excitation scheme to the effluent of atmospheric pressure plasma jet ignited in argon and of OH(A, v' = 1 ← X, v" = 0) to the plasma of coplanar surface barrier discharge in air and in water vapor is shown.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The hydroxyl radical is known to be one of the most important intermediate species in the combustion processes. The hydroxyl radical has also been considered a dominant oxidizer of soot particles in flames. In this investigation the hydroxyl concentration profiles in sooting diffusion flames were measured by the laser-saturated fluorescence (LSF) method. The temperature distributions in the flames were measured by the two-line LSF technique and by thermocouple. In the sooting region the OH fluorescence was too weak to make accurate temperature measurements. The hydroxyl fluorescence profiles for all four flames presented herein show that the OH fluorescence intensities peaked near the flame front. The OH fluorescence intensity dropped sharply toward the dark region of the flame and continued declining to the sooting region. The OH fluorescence profiles also indicate that the OH fluorescence decreased with increasing height in the flames for all flames investigated. Varying the oxidizer composition resulted in a corresponding variation in the maximum OH concentration and the flame temperature. Furthermore, it appears that the maximum OH concentration for each flame increased with increasing flame temperature.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quantitative measurements of scalars in combustion are crucial to our understanding of flame structure and pollutant production. Progress has been made in quantitatively characterizing many laminar flames; however, the inherent fluctuations in turbulent flames significantly complicate such measurements. Picosecond time-resolved laser-induced fluorescence (PITLIF) is a developing technique which seeks to provide the first known means of obtaining quantitative minor-species concentrations in flames at rates sufficient for the study of turbulent fluctuations. This method was developed and applied to measurements of sodium and OH concentrations in laminar flames under previous AFOSR funding. The present report details the construction of a second generation PITLIF instrument. The primary goal of this work is to provide a continuous time series of quantitative concentrations from which frequency domain statistics such as the power spectral density (PSD) can be computed. Using the new laser system, fluorescence measurements of CH and OH time series were collected in a variety of methane and hydrogen flames including nonpremixed turbulent flames. These data have also been compared with available velocity and temperature measurements. The time series and resulting PSDs represent the first measurements of these statistics for minor-species concentrations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Local heat release rate represents one of the most interesting experimental observables in the study of unsteady reacting flows. The direct measure of burning or heat release rate as a field variable is not possible. Numerous experimental investigations have relied on inferring this type of information as well as flame front topology from indirect measures which are presumed to be correlated. A recent study has brought into question many of the commonly used flame front marker and burning rate diagnostics. This same study found that the concentration of formyl radical offers the best possibility for measuring flame burning rate. However, primarily due to low concentrations, the fluorescence signal level from formyl is too weak to employ this diagnostic for single-pulse measurements of turbulent reacting flows. In this paper the authors describe and demonstrate a new fluorescence-based reaction front imaging diagnostic suitable for single-shot applications. The measurement is based on taking the pixel-by-pixel product of OH and CH2O planar laser-induced fluorescence images to yield an image closely related to a reaction rate. The spectroscopic and collisional processes affecting the measured signals are discussed and the foundation of the diagnostic, as based on laminar and unsteady flame calculations, is presented. The authors report the results of applying this diagnostic to the study of a laminar premixed flame subject to an interaction with an isolated line-vortex pair.
