This book explores the pivotal role that football played as part of Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos’ national unity project centred on the peace process with the FARC. Football has huge political and social capital in Latin America, and has often been rhetorically deployed by governments for various ends; rarely, however, has football’s power and potential been used in such a deliberate, strategic and active way towards a national peace process and targeted such enduring divisions that have historically impeded a sense of a united nation and national identity. Football in Colombia is understood popularly as one of the few things capable of uniting the country, a belief that Santos seized upon as the national team had a successful campaign in the 2014 World Cup. This first book on Colombian football in English explores previous iterations of football nationalism in the country, including the El Dorado and ‘Narcofootball’ eras, before analysing Santos’ three-pronged strategy empowering professional and amateur football, including the use of political speeches and Twitter, legislation and public policy, and Sport for Development and Peace campaigns, with a particular focus on football in the FARC demobilisation and reincorporation camps following the historic peace agreement.

Hay una demanda social para que eduquemos hacia el cuidado del cuerpo, la práctica de la condición física-salud y para la utilización constructiva del ocio mediante las actividades recreativas y deportivas, máxime hoy día donde disponemos de más tiempo libre. La segunda trata sobre los juegos populares, tradicionales y autóctonos. El R. D. 126/2014 menciona en muchas ocasiones el poder que tiene el juego de toda índole como elemento sociocultural, la importancia que tienen las formas lúdico-físicas populares, tradicionales y autóctonas en la transmisión de la cultura de las regiones y cómo, a través de su práctica, el alumnado mejora motrizmente, establece relaciones con los demás y transfiere su conocimiento a las nuevas generaciones, además de ocupar racionalmente su tiempo libre convirtiéndolo en saludable. Por último, el título de la obra nos pide que tratemos cómo debemos proceder con las actividades físicas organizadas en el medio natural. También el R. D. 126/2014 nos dice que el alumnado podrá conocerlo a través de las actividades que programemos en él, de esta forma contribuiremos a que lo comprendan, cuiden y defiendan. El medio natural nos ofrece una serie de características que lo hacen ideal para trabajarlo: amplitud de espacios, medio no conocido, abundancia de estímulos, contacto real con temas de estudio escolar, intensidad de la experiencia, poder de rememoración, entre otros (Miguel, 2005). Pocos campos han tenido un avance tan espectacular en las últimas décadas como las actividades físicas en el medio natural. De este modo, las actividades físicas en la naturaleza se convierten en dinamizadoras de economías rurales, vías de escape de la rutina y el estrés de las grandes ciudades, objeto de servicios deportivos de primer orden, campo de juego de una población deseosa de nuevas sensaciones deportivas y, para otras personas, actividad no competitiva que ayuda a conseguir salud en el sentido más amplio del término. En ello tiene especial protagonismo las “empresas de servicios” (Sánchez, 2005).
