Book Synopsis Placing Outer Space by : Lisa Messeri
Download or read book Placing Outer Space written by Lisa Messeri and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2016-09-22 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Placing Outer Space Lisa Messeri traces how the place-making practices of planetary scientists transform the void of space into a cosmos filled with worlds that can be known and explored. Making planets into places is central to the daily practices and professional identities of the astronomers, geologists, and computer scientists Messeri studies. She takes readers to the Mars Desert Research Station and a NASA research center to discuss ways scientists experience and map Mars. At a Chilean observatory and in MIT's labs she describes how they discover exoplanets and envision what it would be like to inhabit them. Today’s planetary science reveals the universe as densely inhabited by evocative worlds, which in turn tells us more about Earth, ourselves, and our place in the universe.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Brady lost his father over a year ago and is still coping by refusing to care about anything anymore. He's failing in school, rejecting the efforts of his friend Franky to help him and lashing out at his mother for dating Brady's science teacher, Mr. Tibbetts. Then his dog, Skip, hears something outside one night and Brady follows him out into the darkness where they find a strange bio-mechanical train which tries to run over Brady. He escapes with Skip only to find that Skip has stolen something off the train, a strange, dark, glowing tube. Brady's mother doesn't believe his tale, so he calls Franky and together they find the tiny alien (Lil Dude) hidden in the tube. As Brady and Franky try to figure out what to do with this strangely recalcitrant little creature, a larger alien, Rotaxis prowls the neighborhood, looking for the stolen tube. And although Rotaxis has a perfectly competent, shape changing, wise cracking, personal assistant, Chimera, he refuses her offers of assistance and in doing so, manages to send Earth through a wormhole. Brady and Franky wake the next morning to see a lime green sky, three suns, and a string of planets now on a collision course with Earth. When neither Mr. Tibbetts or the conspiracy nut sheriff, Sheriff Joe, can figure out what to do, Brady grows desperate. And when Rotaxis manages to hunt them down, Brady and Franky steal his shape shifting train space craft and head out into the galaxy with Lil Dude and (unbeknownst to them) Chimera, to search for the Wormhole Reverser that will save the planet. As Brady navigates through the galaxy, he regains his confidence and remembers what his father said about taking responsibility. As the voice of the still unseen Chimera guides them safely toward their destination, Brady bonds with the ship and begins to suspect that the tale Lil Dude has told them is not the entire truth. After an excursion to another planet where Brady and Franky face incredible creatures, some of whom want them for supper and others who re-open their hearts, the kids find the Wormhole Reverser. But on the journey home, Brady discovers that Lil Dude not only intended to destroy the Earth, but that it is all part of an inter-galactic game. And now Brady is part of it, and must win at all costs. Franky and Brady return to Earth, where, with the help of Mr. Tibbetts, Sheriff Joe and the real Rotaxis, Brady races against time to save the world. And when the battle is over and the Earth returns to its normal orbit, Brady wants nothing more than to go home and start his real life again. Too bad that somewhere in the galaxy, Brady's name appears on the game board & nd another game is just about to begin.
Book Synopsis Postphenomenology and Imaging by : Samantha J. Fried
Download or read book Postphenomenology and Imaging written by Samantha J. Fried and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2021-07-12 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How should we understand the experience of encountering and interpreting images? What are their roles in science and medicine? How do they shape everyday life? Postphenomenology and Imaging: How to Read Technology brings together scholars from multiple disciplines to investigate these questions. The contributors make use of the “postphenomenological” philosophical perspective, applying its distinctive ideas to the study of how images are experienced. These essays offer both philosophical analysis of our conception of images and empirical studies of imaging practice. Edited by Samantha J. Fried and Robert Rosenberger, this collection includes an extensive “primer” chapter introducing and expanding the postphenomenological account of imaging, as well as a set of short pieces by “critical respondents”: prominent scholars who may not self-identify as doing postphenomenology but whose adjacent work is illuminating.
Book Synopsis Far Beyond the Moon by : David P. D. Munns
Download or read book Far Beyond the Moon written by David P. D. Munns and published by University of Pittsburgh Press. This book was released on 2021-06-01 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the beginning of the space age, scientists and engineers have worked on systems to help humans survive for the astounding 28,500 days (78 years) needed to reach another planet. They’ve imagined and tried to create a little piece of Earth in a bubble travelling through space, inside of which people could live for decades, centuries, or even millennia. Far Beyond the Moon tells the dramatic story of engineering efforts by astronauts and scientists to create artificial habitats for humans in orbiting space stations, as well as on journeys to Mars and beyond. Along the way, David P. D. Munns and Kärin Nickelsen explore the often unglamorous but very real problem posed by long-term life support: How can we recycle biological wastes to create air, water, and even food in meticulously controlled artificial environments? Together, they draw attention to the unsung participants of the space program—the sanitary engineers, nutritionists, plant physiologists, bacteriologists, and algologists who created and tested artificial environments for space based on chemical technologies of life support—as well as the bioregenerative algae systems developed to reuse waste, water, and nutrients, so that we might cope with a space journey of not just a few days, but months, or more likely, years.

Book Synopsis Recapturing a Future for Space Exploration by : National Research Council
Download or read book Recapturing a Future for Space Exploration written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2012-01-30 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than four decades have passed since a human first set foot on the Moon. Great strides have been made in our understanding of what is required to support an enduring human presence in space, as evidenced by progressively more advanced orbiting human outposts, culminating in the current International Space Station (ISS). However, of the more than 500 humans who have so far ventured into space, most have gone only as far as near-Earth orbit, and none have traveled beyond the orbit of the Moon. Achieving humans' further progress into the solar system had proved far more difficult than imagined in the heady days of the Apollo missions, but the potential rewards remain substantial. During its more than 50-year history, NASA's success in human space exploration has depended on the agency's ability to effectively address a wide range of biomedical, engineering, physical science, and related obstacles-an achievement made possible by NASA's strong and productive commitments to life and physical sciences research for human space exploration, and by its use of human space exploration infrastructures for scientific discovery. The Committee for the Decadal Survey of Biological and Physical Sciences acknowledges the many achievements of NASA, which are all the more remarkable given budgetary challenges and changing directions within the agency. In the past decade, however, a consequence of those challenges has been a life and physical sciences research program that was dramatically reduced in both scale and scope, with the result that the agency is poorly positioned to take full advantage of the scientific opportunities offered by the now fully equipped and staffed ISS laboratory, or to effectively pursue the scientific research needed to support the development of advanced human exploration capabilities. Although its review has left it deeply concerned about the current state of NASA's life and physical sciences research, the Committee for the Decadal Survey on Biological and Physical Sciences in Space is nevertheless convinced that a focused science and engineering program can achieve successes that will bring the space community, the U.S. public, and policymakers to an understanding that we are ready for the next significant phase of human space exploration. The goal of this report is to lay out steps and develop a forward-looking portfolio of research that will provide the basis for recapturing the excitement and value of human spaceflight-thereby enabling the U.S. space program to deliver on new exploration initiatives that serve the nation, excite the public, and place the United States again at the forefront of space exploration for the global good.
Book Synopsis Environmental Geopolitics by : Shannon O'Lear
Download or read book Environmental Geopolitics written by Shannon O'Lear and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2018-03-12 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thought-provoking and clearly argued text provides a critical geopolitical lens for understanding global environment politics. A subfield of political geography, environmental geopolitics examines how environmental themes are used to support geopolitical arguments and physical realities of power and place. Shannon O’Lear considers common, problematic traits of such familiar but widely misunderstood narratives about human-environment relationships. Mainstream themes about human-environment relationships include narratives about presumed connections between human population trends and resource scarcity; ways in which conflict and violence are linked to resource use or environmental degradation; climate security; and the application of science to solve environmental problems. O’Lear questions these narratives, arguing that the role or meaning of the environment is rarely specified, humans’ role in these situations tends to be considered selectively, and little attention is paid to spatial dimensions of human-environment relationships. She shows that how we tend to think about environmental concerns often obscure value judgments and constrain more dynamic approaches to human-environment relationships. Environmental geopolitics demonstrates how we can question familiar assumptions to generate more just and creative approaches to our many relationships with the environment.

Book Synopsis Forging the Future of Space Science by : National Research Council
Download or read book Forging the Future of Space Science written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2010-03-08 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From September 2007 to June 2008 the Space Studies Board conducted an international public seminar series, with each monthly talk highlighting a different topic in space and Earth science. The principal lectures from the series are compiled in Forging the Future of Space Science. The topics of these events covered the full spectrum of space and Earth science research, from global climate change, to the cosmic origins of life, to the exploration of the Moon and Mars, to the scientific research required to support human spaceflight. The prevailing messages throughout the seminar series as demonstrated by the lectures in this book are how much we have accomplished over the past 50 years, how profound are our discoveries, how much contributions from the space program affect our daily lives, and yet how much remains to be done. The age of discovery in space and Earth science is just beginning. Opportunities abound that will forever alter our destiny.

This acclaimed Newbery Honor Book is a great choice for readers of Kate DiCamillo, Rita Williams-Garcia, and Rebecca Stead. Cash, Fitch, and Bird Nelson Thomas are three siblings in seventh grade together in Park, Delaware. In 1986, as the country waits expectantly for the launch of the space shuttle Challenger, they each struggle with their own personal anxieties. Cash, who loves basketball but has a newly broken wrist, is in danger of failing seventh grade for the second time. Fitch spends every afternoon playing Major Havoc at the arcade on Main and wrestles with an explosive temper that he doesn’t understand. And Bird, his twelve-year-old twin, dreams of being NASA’s first female shuttle commander, but feels like she’s disappearing. The Nelson Thomas children exist in their own orbits, circling a tense and unpredictable household, with little in common except an enthusiastic science teacher named Ms. Salonga. As the launch of the Challenger approaches, Ms. Salonga gives her students a project—they are separated into spacecraft crews and must create and complete a mission. When the fated day finally arrives, it changes all of their lives and brings them together in unexpected ways. Told in three alternating points of view, We Dream of Space is an unforgettable and thematically rich novel for middle grade readers. We Dream of Space is illustrated throughout by the author.
