Book excerpt: This report uses data primarily from the 2004 Graduation Rate Survey (GRS), a component of the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS), to provide a systemwide overview of how graduation rates of comparable 4-year institutions vary with institution selectivity and the size of the low-income population enrolled. The report clearly shows that graduation rates dropped systematically as the proportion of low-income students increased, even within the same Carnegie classification and selectivity levels. Variations by gender and race/ethnicity also were evident. Women graduated at higher rates than men, and in general, as the proportion of low-income students increased, so did the gap between female and male graduation rates. The gap in graduation rates between White and Black students and between White and Hispanic students, on the other hand, typically narrowed as the as the proportion of low-income students increased. In the end, the results indicate that serving large numbers of low-income students does not necessarily lead to low graduation rates. Book excerpt: Current graduation rates indicate a lack of persistence at public two-year community and technical colleges. This study identifies promising practices found to be effective in the way they help improve graduation rates at public two-year colleges in the United States. The research outcomes recommend effective strategies of practice targeting increased student persistence. A National longitudinal dataset, the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS), was queried for graduation rates that increased significantly between 2009 and 2014. The colleges demonstrating significant increases in graduation rates were surveyed, and interviews were conducted with those self-selecting to participate by providing a context to the student success experience on their campuses. Graduation rates of all 910 public two-year colleges consistently demonstrated a negatively skewed 21 percent mean graduation rate in 150 percent of completion time associated with first-time, full-time students. The research determined that coaching and advising, in addition to supplemental instruction and tutoring intervention, had the largest impact of the programs, processes, and practices identified by colleges surveyed and having significant graduation rate increases between 2009 and 2014. There were enduring themes that emerged from the iterative process of thematic analysis employed in the qualitative aspect of this mixed methods study.

Book excerpt: The Office of Planning and Institutional Research (OPAIR), at the University of the West Indies, Mona Campus was asked to undertake an analysis of student throughput rates as part of a University-wide initiative involving the three campuses. Each Campus was provided with a template and guidelines for reporting the data. The exercise was intended to develop a consistent methodology for reporting throughput rates among the Campuses and to assist Faculty and Department Heads in monitoring the academic progression of students on a continuous basis. Undergraduate throughput rates were calculated using a time-to-degree measure which tracks entrants from one academic year to the next over a number of years. Incoming cohorts entering in September 2000 to 2004 were tracked up to the period 2007, allowing for a seven-year graduation rate for the initial cohort. The target population consisted of all undergraduate degree seeking entrants regardless of whether or not it was their first time in university. As the debate continues in the United States about the methodology and implications of graduation rates, this paper outlines a number of alternatives for institutions and policy makers to consider. First, universities interested in examining their graduation rates in detail may consider replicating the internal exercise performed by the University of the West Indies, and where institutions suffer low graduation rates based on the time-to-degree methodology, could calculate a Graduation Efficiency Index or expected completion rates to see whether these alternative methods present favorable results. For policy makers, graduation rates need to be interpreted in the context of a number of factors, one being whether or not the institution is public or private and how selective it is of its student population. Where performance funding is a practice of any state, time-to-degree measures do not necessarily reflect the "efficiency" of a given institution as may a Graduation Efficiency Index, and among highly selective institutions with high graduation rates, these institutions may not be performing optimally if their actual completion rates fall below their expected completion rates when using regression analyses. And finally, until such time that the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS) is replaced by a student unit record information system, a good resource for tracking transfer students is the National Student Clearinghouse. Appendices include: (1) Guidelines and Checklist for Computing Throughput Rates; and (2) Other Factors to Consider for Computing Throughput Rates and Checklist. Book excerpt: Each year millions of young people graduate from high school and enroll in colleges and universities across the country, and many of these students are underprepared for the demands and academic rigor of college-level courses. The purpose of this study was to determine whether there were significant differences in graduation rates between students who entered college academically underprepared and those who entered academically prepared to enroll in college-level courses. The subjects of the study were a selected group of students enrolled at a public, 2-year comprehensive community college located in Northeast Tennessee. The criteria used for selecting the subjects included: (1) Individuals who graduated from high school in the months of December through July in each of the years 2003, 2004, 2005, and 2006 and enrolled as first-time, full-time students during the fall semester immediately following high school graduation; (2) individuals who were classified as full-time students at the community college because they enrolled for a course load of 12 or more semester credit hours; and (3) individuals who had completed the ACT assessment test and were placed in developmental-level courses or college-level courses based on ACT subscores. Students scoring lower than 19 on the ACT in the areas of English, reading, and mathematics were required to take developmental-level courses, whereas students scoring 19 or above were placed in college-level courses. The subjects of the study were tracked for a 3-year period to determine the relationship between the number of developmental courses into which a student was placed and the 3-year graduation rate. This study also examined the relationship between the number of academic subject content areas in which a student was required to take developmental courses and the 3-year graduation rate.
