Book excerpt: Thickening Fat: Fat Bodies, Intersectionality, and Social Justice seeks to explore the multiple, variable, and embodied experiences of fat oppression and fat activisms. Moving beyond an analysis of fat oppression as singular, this book will aim to unpack the volatility of fat—the mutability of fat embodiments as they correlate with other embodied subjectivities, and the threshold where fat begins to be reviled, celebrated, or amended. In addition, Thickening Fat explores the full range of intersectional and liminal analyses that push beyond the simple addition of two or more subjectivities, looking instead at the complex alchemy of layered and unstable markers of difference and privilege. Cognizant that the concept of intersectionality has been filled out in a plurality of ways, Thickening Fat poses critical questions around how to render analysis of fatness intersectional and to thicken up intersectionality, where intersectionality is attenuated to the shifting and composite and material dimensions to identity, rather than reduced to an “add difference and stir” approach. The chapters in this collection ask what happens when we operationalize intersectionality in fat scholarship and politics, and we position difference at the centre and start of inquiry.

This book was released on 2010 with total page 83 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: About four out of five people in low- and middle-income countries who need services for mental, neurological and substance-use conditions do not receive them. Even when available, the interventions often are neither evidence-based nor of high quality. WHO recently launched the mental health Gap Action Programme (mhGAP) for low- and middle-income countries with the objective of scaling up care for mental, neurological and substance-use disorders. This mhGAP Intervention Guide has been developed to facilitate mhGAP-related delivery of evidence-based interventions in non-specialised health-care settings. The Intervention Guide is brief so as to facilitate interventions by busy non-specialists in low- and middle-income countries. It describes in detail what to do but does not go into descriptions of how to do. It is important that the non-specialist health-care providers are trained in using the mhGAP Intervention Guide in assessing and managing people with mental, neurological and substance-use disorders.

Book excerpt: For fifty years, innovations have taken on a new dimension: the Internet, DNA sequencing, genomic manipulations, advances in transhumanism, nanotechnologies ... and much more. These recent innovations are not without addressing new issues whose consequences are as important as irreversible. The innovator, of whom Steve Jobs and Mark Zuckerberg are emblematic contemporary figures, appears as a personality as brilliant as he is destructive, who aspires to change the world regardless of the violence that may ensue. With this then, emerges the need to establish responsible innovation, in which the innovator should be accountable for his actions and review his position as a hero. To establish this new ethic, philosophy is a necessary recourse, since it questions, among other things, the self-control of the Stoics, the prudence of Aristotle, respect of Kant, the will power of Nietzsche and the power of Foucault.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book was first published in French in 1994. It has been a training support to numerous researchers as well as practitioners, such as teachers, health workers, personal or sport trainers. Since then, it has constantly been republished and a glossary has been added in 1998. This version is the first complete edition of the book in English. The main idea of this new interview technique is to help a teacher, a supervisor or a researcher to guide the student, the practitioner or the subject to give a fine retrospective description of an action. As it is only the subject that has access to this mental or physical action, the goal is to help the subject with the verbalization, putting the implicit knowledge of this action in words. Yet, to achieve this verbalization, we need guidance, because we don't know how to give such a description ourselves. If we leave the interviewee without guidance, he risks remaining in the implicit, speaking in a general way, or in an incomplete or imprecise way, commenting instead of describing. The explicit and precise description we aim is the opposite of the implicit, meaning a fine, detailed and complete way of putting the action in words. The final aim is to elucidate what the subject did to seek his goal

This book confirms it is much more than just a slogan, showing how imagination can, in no uncertain way, be a reality. Some 40 outstanding personalities share their insights on their relationship with imagination in their respective fields of study. An astronaut, a philosopher, an environmental activist, a mathematician, an anthropologist, an actor, an astrophysicist, and even a singer — all share how they managed to unlock the power of their imagination to achieve extra-ordinary things. This book is the collective work of men and women from wide-ranging backgrounds, each of whom has contributed to the advancement of our society, making this world more beautiful, just and humane through the power of their imagination. This is the first time an anthology has brought together the thoughts of such prestigious and world-renowned personalities. Through these unique, disruptive, powerful, energizing, often touching, and always very personal testimonies, this book seeks to offer inspiration for each and all of us, so that we too, can find the path to our own imagination.Whether French, Chinese, English, Swiss, Canadian, American, Irish, Belgian, Danish, Algerian or Singaporean, these 40 thought-leaders share their vision of imagination through their personal journey and experience. They do not try to show us the path we must take, but rather invite us to follow our own. The diversity of the backgrounds and expertise of these world-renowned experts is what gives this mosaic of inspirational texts its rich meaning, a diversity which serves to underline what all these journeys and experiences have in common: how essential imagination is in building the society of tomorrow. This anthology is edited by Xavier PAVIE, Professor at ESSEC Business School, Director of the iMagination Center, and Research Associate at the Research Institute in Philosophy of the University of Paris Nanterre (IREPH).
