Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: He lied about everything . . . and I love him anyway. My name is Tyffani Hobbs, but everyone calls me Motormouth, and I’ve got a body count as big as my attitude with a bank account to match. A mercenary all my life, I wouldn’t trade it for anything. After the death of my mentor, I assemble a team to continue his work in protecting the citizens of Hollow Ridge. But The Lady Depot Club is about to bring a lot more trouble than some egotistical strippers. In my line of work, love is the last thing I’m looking for. But that doesn’t stop the new club DJ from catching my eye. Chris “Preacher” Boseman is a walking wet dream . . . and despite trying to ignore his advances, I’ve got no problem getting on my knees to pray in front of this guy. Even though I should be used to secrets, the one Preacher is keeping doesn’t just have the power to destroy us, but everything I’ve worked my life to build. When lines are drawn, the truth comes tumbling out, and everyone has to pick a side— but my choice might be the one that gets us all killed.

Book excerpt: The Duology combines and revises two previous books – Visions, Voices & Violence (VVV) and Not Blood Uncle (NBU) – all by Zahn Pesh, to tell one story: How Vaney got in trouble with the San Francisco police (Chapters1-11) and how Zahn got him out of it (Chapters 12-17). Based on a true story, Pesh created these fictional memoirs to memorialize the epileptically disabled youth. To make Billy’s non-verbal communications intelligible to readers, Pesh created an argot based on the youth’s Midwestern dialect. Also, especially for strong verbs, the youth forms past tenses by adding d’s or t’s to infinitives (e.g., instead of “go, went, gone,” Billy says “go, go’d, go’d” or where t’s sound more natural “think, think’t, think’t”). Pesh also created a way (e.g., a new punctuation mark “hyphen hyphen” before direct thoughts) to indicate internalized thoughts. Further, all print-to-order royalties go directly to a nonprofit organization for gifts to the needy or matching awards to train police to distinguish between disabled persons and criminals. These books – The Duology, VVV and NBU – are available individually as e-books or in soft covers through Xlibris, Barnes and Nobel, and Amazon and the nonprofit organization James Floyd McKinney Foundation, where tax deductible donations are gratefully acknowledged and accepted.

Book excerpt: “Pit Bull 101” traces the loveable Pitbull from its historic ancestry to today. The dog’s pedigree, genealogy, and temperament are illustrated. Pitbulls have been the subject of adverse legislation illegal operations, and public disquiet. By learning about the Pitbull, you will find that they are not dangerous, vicious, or difficult to train. Pitbulls have a varied history. They are not fighting dogs but rescue dogs, police dogs, dogs used for care, and support dogs. They will love you, unconditionally and be your most loyal friend. At one time in America’s history, Pitbulls were known as America’s dog. They were on war posters for WWI and WWII, the face of Buster Brown shoes, and known as nanny dogs. You have seen the Pitbull running with the Little Rascals and as a part of Rachael Ray’s dog food commercial. The Pitbulls reputation was horribly damaged by magazine articles, media prejudice, and the story of Michael Vick and his dogfighting project. Yet, these dogs that were horribly abused and tortured became happy and loving family pets and mascots. The Michael Vick tragedy changed the face of dog rescue. Fighting dogs are no longer indiscriminately “put down.” The care and feeding of a Pitbull are outlined in the book. These same training techniques, feeding, and scheduling tips can be used for any dog, and if you are diligent and consistent, these tips will provide you with a Pitbull who will outlive any other breed. Now there are rescue societies and groups who understand what a Pitbull is, and they are working diligently to repair this breed’s reputation. Own a Pitbull, and you will find that they are awesome dogs. About the Expert Catherine Thompson holds a Masters' Degree in Criminal Justice with an emphasis on grant writing. Book excerpt: As a "fictional memoir," Zahn Pesh tells the true story of a mentally disabled young man Billy, known affectionately as Vaney and Billy's run-in with the San Francisco police. Often using "Billy speak," the youth's arcane lingo, the author reveals society's neglect and injustices toward such individuals. Wrongly, Billy is accused of making "terrorist threats" against a paramedic, but few other than Pesh believe the disabled kid's story. Avoiding the blame game, Pesh shows how each from personal perspective does his duty, indiscriminately, but nonetheless Billy, or Vaney, suffers because the system fails. Billy is treated like a criminal, not as a patient, which Pesh insists he is. Try as he might, Pesh only meagerly reforms that system, before . . .

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although US history is marred by institutionalized racism and sexism, postracial and postfeminist attitudes drive our polarized politics. Violence against people of color, transgender and gay people, and women soar upon the backdrop of Donald Trump, Tea Party affiliates, alt-right members like Richard Spencer, and right-wing political commentators like Milo Yiannopoulos who defend their racist and sexist commentary through legalistic claims of freedom of speech. While more institutions recognize the volatility of these white men’s speech, few notice or have thoughtfully considered the role of white nationalist, alt-right, and conservative white women’s messages that organizationally preserve white supremacy. In Rebirthing a Nation: White Women, Identity Politics, and the Internet, author Wendy K. Z. Anderson details how white nationalist and alt-right women refine racist rhetoric and web design as a means of protection and simultaneous instantiation of white supremacy, which conservative political actors including Sarah Palin, Donald Trump, Kellyanne Conway, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, and Ivanka Trump have amplified through transnational politics. By validating racial fears and political divisiveness through coded white identity politics, postfeminist and motherhood discourse functions as a colorblind, gilded cage. Rebirthing a Nation reveals how white nationalist women utilize colorblind racism within digital space, exposing how a postfeminist framework becomes fodder for conservative white women’s political speech to preserve institutional white supremacy.

The author describes lessons she's learned from her great grandmother, grandmother, and mother that helped her navigate life from her early years through her twenties. It was their strength, courage, and ability to dream that helped her as a young, homeschooled, Black child of a deceased father and single mother who hails from a low-income, poverty-stricken, drug-infested, and gang and gun violence ridden neighborhood grow up to become an educator at her childhood elementary school. She describes how she received her doctorate in education, created her own publishing company, became a self-published author, and activist for single-mother college students. In the process, realizing that no matter what life brings, God always has a plan and it is important to trust in Him and have faith in His plan.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Silvia Bermúdez’s fascinating study reveals how Spanish popular music, produced between 1980 and 2013, was the first cultural site to engage in critical debate about ethnicity and race in relation to the immigration patterns that have been changing the social landscape of Spanish society since the late 1970s. In Rocking the Boat, Bermúdez examines the lyrics of songs by both renowned and up and coming artists to illuminate how these new migrants challenged Spain’s notions of homogeneity, boundaries, accommodation, and incorporation. Bermúdez observes that immigration has had such a significant influence on Spanish society that the tattered boats, seen to this day on the shores of Spain and throughout the Mediterranean Sea, have become inverted emblems of the ships that were once symbols of great power and economic development. Rocking the Boat is a nuanced account of how popular urban music shaped the discourse on immigration, transnational migrants, and racialization in Spain’s new social landscape.
