Book excerpt: The hugely illuminating story of how a popular breed of dog became the most demonized and supposedly the most dangerous of dogs—and what role humans have played in the transformation. When Bronwen Dickey brought her new dog home, she saw no traces of the infamous viciousness in her affectionate, timid pit bull. Which made her wonder: How had the breed—beloved by Teddy Roosevelt, Helen Keller, and Hollywood’s “Little Rascals”—come to be known as a brutal fighter? Her search for answers takes her from nineteenth-century New York City dogfighting pits—the cruelty of which drew the attention of the recently formed ASPCA—to early twentieth‑century movie sets, where pit bulls cavorted with Fatty Arbuckle and Buster Keaton; from the battlefields of Gettysburg and the Marne, where pit bulls earned presidential recognition, to desolate urban neighborhoods where the dogs were loved, prized—and sometimes brutalized. Whether through love or fear, hatred or devotion, humans are bound to the history of the pit bull. With unfailing thoughtfulness, compassion, and a firm grasp of scientific fact, Dickey offers us a clear-eyed portrait of this extraordinary breed, and an insightful view of Americans’ relationship with their dogs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This best-selling book is also “#1 book in motorcycle safety” (Nielsen BookScan) and essential reading for all motorcyclists regardless of their years of experience. Author David L. Hough, a revered motorcycle author, columnist, and riding-safety consultant, lays out a clear course for all riders who want to sharpen their handling skills and improve their rides. This second edition, expanded and now in full color, offers new riders and road warriors the exact kind of advice they need to be prepared for anything when on the road, how to avoid accidents, and how to handle the unexpected. Hough, who began motorcycling in the 1960s, tackles every imaginable topic—from the mechanics of the bike, selection of the right-sized bike, and basic riding skills to night riding, group outings, and advanced survival tactics. In the chapter called “Motorcycle Dynamics,” Hough spells out the equipment needed and basic skills required to control a bike, and specifically keeping the rider’s safety and ability to avoid potentially injurious or fatal crashes. The author is outspoken and direct when it comes to safety, and he emphasizes the importance of the rider’s braking abilities and spells out how to improve them. The chapter offers six tried-and-true techniques for quick-stop tactics, critical for every rider to understand and master. He also addresses other vital skills that riders need to evaluate and improve, such as turning, maintaining balance and stability, and steering. He defines, compares, and analyzes the ins and outs of steering and control: direct steering, countersteering, push steering, out-tracking, coning, u-turns, and directional control. The chapter called “Cornering Habits” is a virtual master class in acceleration, deceleration, use of weight, throttle, leaning, and handling challenging terrain. Hough’s skill as a photographer and illustrator adds a graphic element to his books that leads to immediate understanding of the concepts he explains. The detail offered in each section of the book can only come from decades on the road, and the author is the consummate instructor, assigning homework to the readers in the form of exercises to practice and improve specific techniques that he outlines and illustrates in the text. Any rider who would venture out on the road without David Hough’s voice in his head takes an unnecessary risk with his own life. Proficient Motorcycling takes riders from long, snaking country roads right into the traffic of the big city, and Hough offers the best advice for riders dealing with the most challenging conditions, whether it’s road construction, snap-jawed intersections, skateboarders, or suddenly slippery road surfaces. A critical section of the book offers riders advice on how to deal with automobiles, including aggressive car drivers, oblivious SUV drivers, or “blind” truck drivers. The book offers the kind of first-hand experience that can literally save riders’ lives, as illustrated in the chapters “Booby Traps” and “Special Situations,” which offer evasive tactics and advice to avoid and handle everything from slick surfaces, curbs, and construction plates to ferocious dogs, hazardous wildlife, and difficult weather conditions. The final chapter of the book, “Sharing the Ride,” is geared toward experienced riders who travel together in groups or who travel with a second passenger on the bike. Topics covered are formation, packing for trips, communication between riders, sidecars, trikes, and more. The book concludes with a resources section of organizations, training schools, educational tools, and websites; a glossary of 80+ terms; and a complete index.

Friends and colleagues affectionately dubbed him ‘The Hammer’. His retirement from the NYPD was a bittersweet turning point in his life. In 2015, Aiden decided to retire and live a quiet life with his wife, Alexis, in the fictional small town of Hill Valley, Tennessee. What began as a quiet and seemingly perfect retirement quickly turns into a world filled with rage and grief as a result of the brutal murder of Aiden’s wife by his neighbour’s son, Taylor. Aiden soon discovers that Taylor, a convicted felon and drug dealer, murdered Alexis. Aiden also learns about Taylor’s best friend, Grant Seaton, the corrupt sheriff of Hill Valley, having tampered with evidence at the crime scene. Aiden secures the assistance of his old friend and cherished former partner, Patrick Feeley. The two men reunite and combine forces to seek vengeance against Taylor and Seaton. Aiden takes extreme risks along with Feeley to execute his brilliant plan. The conflict in Aiden’s life finds no end as he is later faced with combating drug trafficking in Hill Valley. Making matters worse is the fact that two new enemies, a convicted felon from his past and the head of a local drug cartel, set their sights on Aiden. As a result, Aiden is forced to make life-and-death decisions.

Book excerpt: It was time for me to gather my girls and leave my train wreck of a marriage. The divorce, although needed and inevitable, was as messy and complicated as the marriage. We were separated at least a year before he filed. I had been doing me. The girls and I had been living it up. I knew you couldn’t move forward looking back, so I was ready to move on at his expense. I knew we were finished, and I needed to put it behind me. I thought it would be easy. Wishful thinking. This divorce took way too much time, and I felt like I had the worst judge on the bench. Situations like this have a way of exposing the fake people in your life. It let’s you know who is truly for you and who has secretly been against you. Family and so-called friends turned their back on me and continued to betray me. I never imagined the people closest to me would do and say the things they did and said to and about me. The moment I decided to do what I felt was best for me and my girls, the ridicule began, and it was relentless. I was immediately a bad mother. I received so many disturbing messages that I sent a few of my own, changed my number, and moved on with my life, without them in it. I had to stand my ground and defend the decisions I made. I needed to show I was strong enough to stand alone. I had pushed away and removed a lot of people from my life at this time. I never really had a family, just a bunch of relatives. I never had many friends, only true frenemies. On top of that, my relationship with my girls got sketchy. I felt like it was me against the world, and I was ready for battle.

Book excerpt: From the editor-in-chief of Easyriders magazine, One Percenter presents an unprecedented social analysis of American outlaw biker culture. A longtime biker and self-proclaimed nonconformist, Dave Nichols is not a subtle man. “Bikers are the last wolves in a land of sheep,” he affirms—but the motivations of today’s biking culture stretch far back into the annals of human history. One Percenter: The Legend of the Outlaw Biker illuminates the origins of rebel mentality, which began far outside of cycling: with groups from the Mongols and Huns to the Vikings, from pirates to the gunslingers of the Old West. In his signature no-nonsense style, Nichols traces his own defiant mindset from ancient times all the way into the modern era, where this one-percenter perspective is best embodied by outlaw bikers. As biographical as it is insightful, One Percenter also touches on the iconic Harley-Davidson motorcycle, gives a brief history of Easyriders magazine, and unapologetically criticizes the U.S. media for what Nichols views as a biased, unfairly negative portrayal of motorcycle clubs. Complete with an exclusive collection of photographs taken by Kim Peterson, editor of In The Wind magazine, this book offers a fascinating and analytical discussion of the rebel ethos that has become a staple of American popular culture.

Book excerpt: Whether it's a big-bore, high-end custom sportbike you're after, or a naked, bare knuckles streetfighting drag racer, this book has the goods for getting you there. In three different scenarios, the nation's top builders give blow-by-blow instructions for completely rebuilding three popular streetbikes -- from performance modifications and exhaust systems to flawless finishes and detail work. Focusing on highly customized Hayabusa drag bikes, including a slammed and lowered Suzuki GSX1300R Hayabusa, John Dantzler of the Charlotte, North Carolina, shop Two Wheel Customs outlines the suspension and engine modifications that the serious street and quarter-mile racer can make. He takes a salvaged, late-model four-cylinder street machine and transforms it into the kind of machine that both professional stunt riders and corner-carving enthusiasts favor. Next, author Mike Seate covers the details on constructing and installing popular modifications -- everything from engine crash guards and wheelie bars to motocross-style handlebars and bikini fairings -- while stunt riders and streetfighter builders from the United States and Europe weigh in with tips and advice. Last but not least, the builders at Wisconsins Patrick's Performance and South Carolina's Coastal Motorcycles provide a step-by-step account of the construction of two high-end custom sportbikes -- transforming a Yamaha YZF R-1 and a Suzuki GSX-R 1000 into the kind of machines that are eye-popping everywhere-on the streets or on the motorcycle show circuit.

I found myself growing up in a household with people that abused me mentally, physically, and emotionally. Not knowing how to deal with living in a loveless home, I began to act out. I was out of control in school. I made sure I got good grades. My behavior, on the other hand, showed that I was a troubled child. I did not listen to teachers, principals, or anyone else. I pulled fire alarms and locked classroom and bathroom doors. I was always in the principal's office for fighting or stealing. I even remember sliding down the front hall in my slip. That was just kindergarten. I began drinking, drugging, and smoking cigarettes at the age of twelve. At that time, I felt like I was completely free of all emotion. There was nothing or no one that was ever going to hurt me again. I had become just as toxic as my environment. I carried all that baggage to college with me. It was there I met my children's father. From infidelity to prison, the back-and-forth in this relationship was shameful, to say the least. This had to be the pettiest relationship I have ever seen or been in. Instead of walking away, we got married and had two daughters together. It was thirteen long years of heavy drinking, drugging, and domestic violence. Our children witnessed far too much far too soon. I was creating more damaged goods.
