Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A historical reference for more than one hundred handguns. United States Martial Pistols and Revolvers, first published in 1939, provides firearm collectors and enthusiasts with a single authoritative volume containing information on the development and description of martial short arms, from the flintlock pistol that was available at the birth of the nation to the latest available handguns during the World War I. This book is particularly useful to collectors as an important reference source, offering a listing of single-shot pistols, revolvers, and semiautomatic pistols, over the period of 1799–1917. Gluckman covers the brief histories of more than one hundred handguns, going into the specific details of the chemistry of gunpowder and the development of the first automatic firearms. Following innovators like Reverend Alexander Forsyth, John P. Lindsay, and Samuel Colt, the evolution of the weapons is carefully examined over time. The comprehensive text is accompanied by a series of original illustrations of the pistols and revolvers, demonstrating the specifics of many gun mechanisms. For experts and the more casual hobbyist alike, this book offers a unique collection of information on martial pistols and revolvers in the United States, up until WWI. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early transition from the long-lived flintlock system, handgun development closely paralleled that of the long arms. With the advent of the revolving pistols, however; came patents that created monopolies in revolver production and the through-bored cylinder necessary for self-contained metallic cartridges. The caplock revolvers took on a separate evolution and remained state of the art long after the widespread appearance of cartridge firing rifles and shotguns. They rode in the holsters of of explorers and adventurers across the world and granted safe conduct in the back-alleys of the Industrial West right up until the last quarter of the 19th Century. Handguns possess a mystique distinctly different from that of other firearms. They are tools of personal empowerment-chosen by their owners to provide independence and freedom of movement. In the ambitious, optimistic early years of western industrial civilization they were the emblem of liberty and equality and the bane of repressive governments and social movements. Largely because of the traditions that emerged in the time of the caplock pistols and revolvers, they remain so in the early years of the 21st Century.

Book Synopsis The Art of Revolver Shooting by : Walter Winans
Download or read book The Art of Revolver Shooting written by Walter Winans and published by Loose Cannon. This book was released on 1911-01-02 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The highly-readable American classic, by the definitive expert of that era. Walter W. Winans (born April 5, 1852) was a stand-out American marksman, horse breeder, sculptor, and painter who participated in the 1908 and 1912 Summer Olympics. He won two medals for shooting: a gold in 1908 and a silver in 1912, as well as demonstrating the sport of pistol duelling in the 1908 Games. He was the author of ten books on shooting, of which this was the first. The Winans range at the National Shooting Centre, Bisley, England is named after him. His book covers a wide range of history, design, developments and marksmanship technique of the revolver. It has a special focus on techniques used at the classic Bisley competitions in England during the Victorian era. Including stages that featured rapid fire, moving, and disappearing targets with valuable tips that may be of interest to 'Action Shooter' competitors. Shooters on any level will find something of value in this truly outstanding gem of shooting literature. Original book description: 1911 New Edition, Revised and enlarged Mr. Walter Winans, the well-known champion revolver-shot, has been for many years working out the theory and practice of revolver shooting, and this is the first occasion of his publishing the collected results of his close study of the weapon. Although several chapters of the book give minute instructions as to how to shoot in order to win prizes at the Bisley meeting, the author has not neglected the more general and practical side of the subject, and even such matters (hitherto regarded in the light of professional secrets) as trick- and stage-shooting, shooting in the dark, etc., are treated in detail not previously attempted, while a chapter on how to use the revolver (as distinct from target shooting) in warfare, has a present interest that must appeal to many. Keywords: pistol, markmanship, Bisley, rapid fire, revolver, hunting, handgun, duel, dueling
Book Synopsis The Modern Pistol and How to Shoot It by : Walter Winans
Download or read book The Modern Pistol and How to Shoot It written by Walter Winans and published by Library of Alexandria. This book was released on 2011-01-01 with total page 363 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is now no use learning revolver shooting. That form of pistol is obsolete except in the few instances where it survives for target shooting, or is carried for self-defence; just as flintlock muskets even now survive in out-of-the-way parts of the world. If a man tries to defend himself with a revolver against another armed with an automatic pistol he is at a great disadvantage. The automatic is more accurate than a revolver, as the “blow-back” does not vary as much as does the escape of gas past the cylinder in a revolver. The bullet in the revolver has to jump into the cylinder, whereas in the automatic it is already fitted up against the rifling, before being fired. The single-shot pistol is the most accurate of any, there being no escape of gas. The automatic has not only a much longer range than the revolver (although the popular idea that it can be shot accurately at a thousand yards or more is nonsense) but it cocks itself instead of having to be cocked by the thumb, or trigger finger. Cocking by trigger-pull is such a strain on, not only the trigger finger, but the whole hand, that, after a few shots, good shooting cannot be made. I won all my rapid-firing revolver competitions using the single action and cocking with the thumb, as this rested my trigger finger. With the automatic, cocking is unnecessary and, with its lighter recoil, good scores in rapid-firing are very much easier to make. The penetration of the nickel-coated automatic bullet propelled by its big charge of nitro powder is very great. A man brought me a “pistol-proof” cuirass to test; I put a bullet at twelve yards clean through it and then through two “bullet proof” ones, placed one behind the other. (I used a regulation U. S. .45 Automatic pistol.) This was before the war. The inventor was disappointed. He had experimented only with revolvers shooting soft leaden bullets and these his cuirass had stopped. Unfortunately, in its present comparatively imperfect development, the automatic is the most dangerous firearm of all pistols for a novice to handle. The long barrel of a rifle can be struck aside if a beginner swings it round and points it at the instructor or a nearby spectator, but the short barrel of a pistol is easily pointed at and with difficulty brushed aside by the unfortunate person standing near a “brandishing” and “flourishing” man who is learning to shoot. In spite of all warnings even those who ought to know better do this swinging about. In fact, it is the recognized way of handling a pistol; according to reporters, they always say So and So “was brandishing a pistol” if he happens to be armed.
Book Synopsis American Pistol & Revolver Design and Performance by : Louis Robert Wallack
Download or read book American Pistol & Revolver Design and Performance written by Louis Robert Wallack and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Writing with deceptive simplicity, the author describes the workings both of pistols and revolvers. He details such crucial aspects as feeding and firing systems, extraction and ejection, barrels and grips, sights, and the use of scopes. Moreover, his lucid discussion of bullets, powders, cases, and primers does much to illuminate his description of bores, ballistics, and how a bullet reacts once the trigger is pulled.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1935, Textbook of Pistols and Revolvers is a treatise on handguns of the early twentieth century. Written by Major Julian S. Hatcher, an expert on the subject of firearms of all sorts, readers will gain invaluable insight into everything to do with handheld firearms of the 1930s. In his introduction, Hatcher emphasizes that he has made an earnest effort to make this book accessible for both novices and experts. Novices who know nothing whatsoever about firearms and their use can easily learn from this book, while experts will find a technical reference book where “the results of many experiments with pistols and revolvers and their ammunition are tabulated in convenient form.” Covering such subjects as the different methods of shooting and using hand firearms; their mechanism, care and repair; their interior and exterior ballistics; the peculiar suitability of the different kinds for various purposes; the relative effectiveness or stopping power of the various calibers and types of gun and ammunition; and many more, this book is an immense store of knowledge on early handguns.
