Book excerpt: For seventeen-year-old Jason Krabb, high school life in 1990s Idaho is a world of cargo shorts, cassette tapes, and junk food. Plagued equally by algebra and puberty, Jason sets out to find a girlfriend and become a rock guitarist. His quest is irreversibly jolted when he attends a bonfire and meets an alluring girl from the other side of town and a rag tag crew who are bringing gas lines through the desert in order to keep the lights on in Portland and Seattle, places where Jason hopes to find his nirvana as a guitarist. Meanwhile, things deteriorate at home. Jason's pediatrician mom, Leah, sadly faces the twilight of her parenting years while his father, Curtis, contends with the enormity of running a big ticket research laboratory and coming to terms with his son's wayward path. Pipeliner is at once a coming of age love story and a comical timestamp of early 90s family life. Set in the fictional Idaho town of Helen Springs, pop. 58,000, its characters are as vibrant as the lofty peaks and purple sunsets of the high desert. Here we find rich farmers, poor ranchers, dutiful Mormons, government honchos, disgruntled vets, drug-dealing bruisers, irksome teachers, and spirited students, all doing their best to keep the lights on.

D dissertation completed at the Laboratory of Computer Science, MIT, during the Summer of 1986. In my dissertation I proposed a pipelined code mapping scheme for array operations on static dataflow architectures. The main addition to this work is found in Chapter 12, reflecting new research results developed during the last three years since I joined McGill University-results based upon the principles in my dissertation. The terminology dataflow soft ware pipelining has been consistently used since publication of our 1988 paper on the argument-fetching dataflow architecture model at McGill University [43]. In the first part of this book we describe the static data flow graph model as an operational model for concurrent computation. We look at timing considerations for program graph execution on an ideal static dataflow computer, examine the notion of pipe lining, and characterize its performance. We discuss balancing techniques used to transform certain graphs into fully pipelined data flow graphs. In particular, we show how optimal balancing of an acyclic data flow graph can be formulated as a linear programming problem for which an optimal solution exists. As a major result, we show the optimal balancing problem of acyclic data flow graphs is reduceable to a class of linear programming problem, the net work flow problem, for which well-known efficient algorithms exist. This result disproves the conjecture that such problems are computationally hard.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The quest for higher performance digital systems for applications such as gen eral purpose computing, signal/image processing, and telecommunications and an increasing cost consciousness have led to a major thrust for high speed VLSI systems implemented in inexpensive and widely available technologies such as CMOS. This monograph, based on the first author's doctoral dissertation, con centrates on the technique of wave pipelining as one method toward achieving this goal. The primary focus of this monograph is to provide a coherent pre sentation of the theory of wave pipelined operation of digital circuits and to discuss practical design techniques for the realization of wave pipelined circuits in the CMOS technology. Wave pipelining can be applied to a variety of cir cuits for increased performance. For example, many architectures that support systolic computation lend themselves to wave pipelined realization. Also, the wave pipeline design methodology emphasizes the role of controlled clock skew in extracting enhanced performance from circuits that are not deeply pipelined. Wave pipelining (also known as maximal rate pipelining) is a timing method ology used in digital systems to increase the number of effective pipeline stages without increasing the number of physical registers in the pipeline. Using this technique, new data is applied to the inputs of a combinational logic block be fore the outputs due to previous inputs are available thus effectively pipelining the combinational logic and maximizing the utilization of the logic.

Book excerpt: Thanks to farmers’ resistance to provide land for constructing watercourses below the outlets, India’s famous Sardar Sarovar Project is stuck in an impasse. Against a potential to serve 1.8 million hectares, the Project was irrigating just 100,000 hectares five years after the dam and main canals were ready. Indications are that full project benefits will get delayed by years, even decades. In this paper, IWMI researchers advance ten reasons why the Project should abandon its original plan of constructing open channels and license private service providers to invest in pumps and buried pipeline networks to sell irrigation service to farmers.

Book excerpt: True or false? In selling high-value products or services: 'closing' increases your chance of success; it is essential to describe the benefits of your product or service to the customer; objection handling is an important skill; open questions are more effective than closed questions. All false, says this provocative book. Neil Rackham and his team studied more than 35,000 sales calls made by 10,000 sales people in 23 countries over 12 years. Their findings revealed that many of the methods developed for selling low-value goods just don‘t work for major sales. Rackham went on to introduce his SPIN-Selling method. SPIN describes the whole selling process: Situation questions Problem questions Implication questions Need-payoff questions SPIN-Selling provides you with a set of simple and practical techniques which have been tried in many of today‘s leading companies with dramatic improvements to their sales performance.
