Book excerpt: Analog to digital converter (ADC) design has been an active research topic over the past few decades, as the scaling down of Complementary Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor (CMOS) Integrated Circuit (IC) fabrication process offers continuing room for performance improvement. Various ADC architectures have been proposed by researchers, including flash, successive approximation, sigma-delta and pipeline, etc. Among these architectures, pipeline ADC offers moderate resolution at high conversion speed and is widely used in both civil and military applications. In this thesis, we develop a 9 stage 10 bit pipeline ADC circuit in AMIS C5N process. The whole design methodology, from system simulation to schematic entry, from circuit simulation to post signal analysis is proposed. The operation frequency of the pipeline ADC is pushed to the upper limit of the process used. The ADC is designed and simulated in Cadence environment. Post simulation signal analysis is done in Matlab in order to verify its performance.

Book excerpt: Digitally Assisted Pipeline ADCs: Theory and Implementation explores the opportunity to reduce ADC power dissipation by leveraging digital signal processing capabilities in fine line integrated circuit technology. The described digitally assisted pipelined ADC uses a statistics-based system identification technique as an enabling element to replace precision residue amplifiers with simple open-loop gain stages. The digital compensation of analog circuit distortion eliminates one key factor in the classical noise-speed-linearity constraint loop and thereby enables a significant power reduction. Digitally Assisted Pipeline ADCs: Theory and Implementation describes in detail the implementation and measurement results of a 12-bit, 75-MSample/sec proof-of-concept prototype. The Experimental converter achieves power savings greater than 60% over conventional implementations. Digitally Assisted Pipeline ADCs: Theory and Implementation will be of interest to researchers and professionals interested in advances of state-of-the-art in A/D conversion techniques.

Book excerpt: This book presents models and procedures to design pipeline analog-to-digital converters, compensating for device inaccuracies, so that high-performance specs can be met within short design cycles. These models are capable of capturing and predicting the behavior of pipeline data converters within less than half-a-bit deviation, versus transistor-level simulations. As a result, far fewer model iterations are required across the design cycle. Models described in this book accurately predict transient behaviors, which are key to the performance of discrete-time systems and hence to the performance of pipeline data converters.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Real world is analog but the processing of signals can best be done in digital domain. So the need for Analog to Digital Converters (ADCs) is ever rising as more and more applications set in. With the advent of mobile technology, power in electronic equipment is being driven down to get more battery life. Because of their ubiquitous nature, ADCs are prime blocks in the signal chain in which power is intended to be reduced. In this thesis, four techniques to reduce power in high speed pipelined ADCs have been proposed. The first is a capacitor and opamp sharing technique that reduces the load on the first stage opamp by three fold. The second is a capacitor reset technique that aids removing the sample and hold block to reduce power. The third is a modified MDAC which can take rail-to-rail input swing to get an extra bit thus getting rid of a power hungry opamp. The fourth is a hybrid architecture which makes use of an asynchronous SAR ADC as the backend of a pipelined ADC to save power. Measurement and simulation results that prove the efficiency of the proposed techniques are presented.

Book excerpt: This book shows that digitally assisted analog to digital converters are not the only way to cope with poor analog performance caused by technology scaling. It describes various analog design techniques that enhance the area and power efficiency without employing any type of digital calibration circuitry. These techniques consist of self-biasing for PVT enhancement, inverter-based design for improved speed/power ratio, gain-of-two obtained by voltage sum instead of charge redistribution, and current-mode reference shifting instead of voltage reference shifting. Together, these techniques allow enhancing the area and power efficiency of the main building blocks of a multiplying digital-to-analog converter (MDAC) based stage, namely, the flash quantizer, the amplifier, and the switched capacitor network of the MDAC. Complementing the theoretical analyses of the various techniques, a power efficient operational transconductance amplifier is implemented and experimentally characterized. Furthermore, a medium-low resolution reference-free high-speed time-interleaved pipeline ADC employing all mentioned design techniques and circuits is presented, implemented and experimentally characterized. This ADC is said to be reference-free because it precludes any reference voltage, therefore saving power and area, as reference circuits are not necessary. Experimental results demonstrate the potential of the techniques which enabled the implementation of area and power efficient circuits.

Book excerpt: Power budget is very critical in the design of battery-powered implantable biomedical instruments. High speed, high resolution and low power usually cannot be achieved at the same time. Therefore, a tradeoff must be made to compromise every aspect of those features. As the main component of the bioinstrument, high conversion rate, high resolution ADC consumes most of the power. Fortunately, based on the operation modes of the bioinstrument, a reconfigurable ADC can be used to solve this problem. The reconfigurable ADC will operate at 10-bit 40 MSPS for the diagnosis mode and at 8-bit 2.5 MSPS for the monitor mode. The ADC will be completely turned off if no active signal comes from sensors or if an off command is received from the antenna. By turning off the sample hold stage and the first two stages of the pipeline ADC, a significant power saving is achieved. However, the reconfigurable ADC suffers from two drawbacks. First, the leakage signals through the extra off-state switches in the third stage degrade the performance of the data converter. This situation tends to be even worse for high speed and high-resolution applications. An interference elimination technique has been proposed in this work to solve this problem. Simulation results show a significant attenuation of the spurious tones. Moreover, the transistors in the OTA tend to operate in weak inversion region due to the scaling of the bias current. The transistor in subthreshold is very slow due to the small transit frequency. In order to get a better tradeoff between the transconductance efficiency and the transit frequency, reconfigurable OTAs and scalable bias technique are devised to adjust the operating point from weak inversion to moderate inversion. The figure of merit of the reconfigurable ADC is comparable to the previously published conventional pipeline ADCs. For the 10-bit, 40 MSPS mode, the ADC attains a 56.9 dB SNDR for 35.4 mW power consumption. For the 8-bit 2.5 MSPS mode, the ADC attains a 49.2 dB SNDR for 7.9 mW power consumption. The area for the core layout is 1.9 mm2 for a 0.35 micrometer process.

Book excerpt: In high-performance pipelined analog-to-digital converters (ADCs), the residue amplifiers dissipate the majority of the overall converter power. Therefore, finding alternatives to the relatively inefficient, conventional class-A circuit realization is an active area of research. One option for improvement is to employ class-AB amplifiers, which can, in principle, provide large drive currents on demand and improve the efficiency of residue amplification. Unfortunately, due to the simultaneous demand for high speed and high gain in pipelined ADCs, the improvements seen in class-AB designs have so far been limited. This dissertation presents the design of an efficient class-AB amplification scheme based on a pseudo-differential, single-stage and cascode-free architecture. Nonlinear errors due to finite DC gain are addressed using a deterministic digital background calibration that measures the circuit imperfections in time intervals between normal conversion cycles of the ADC. As a proof of concept, a 12-bit 30-MS/s pipelined ADC was realized using class-AB amplifiers with the proposed digital calibration. The prototype ADC occupies an active area of 0.36 mm2 in 90-nm CMOS. It dissipates 2.95 mW from a 1.2-V supply and achieves an SNDR of 64.5 dB for inputs near the Nyquist frequency. The corresponding figure of merit is 72 fJ/conversion-step.
