Book excerpt: Excerpt from Discoverers and Pioneers of America The planet that heralds the sunrise, may be a volcanic waste, like the moon, or scathed with the fires of sin, like the earth; and so the morning stars of heroism, that guided and illumined the first advances of a noon-day civilization to this Western World, were not all as cultivated and pure as those followers of the one bright and morning Star, who colonized the shores of Plymouth and the banks of the Delaware. Whoever was illustrious, for any reason, in the early history of America, may be included in the number; and some of the most promiment of these, particularly they who may represent different portions of North America, have been selected as subjects of the following sketches. A number of characters, deserving an equal place with some of those now chosen, were omitted for want of room. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pioneers in Tropical America I have tried, in describing these adventures, to give my readers some idea of the scenery, animals, and vegetation of the new lands through which these pioneers passed on their great and small purposes; as 'well as of the people, native to the soil, with whom they came in contact. And in treating of these subjects I have thought it best to give the scientific names of the plant or animal which was of importance in my story, so that any of my readers who were really interested in natural history could at once ascertain for themselves the exact type alluded to, and, if they wished, look it up in a museum, a garden, or a natural history book. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pioneers of Science in America: Sketches of Their Lives and Scientific Work In this country the men who took a prominent part in the initiation of these wonderful changes were comparatively few, while the disadvantages they had to contend with were many and serious. Scattered over a large extent of undeveloped territory, unable to secure the benefits of co-operation, poor in pocket, and generally lacking the sympathy when they did not meet the active opposition of their fellow-men, the work they did as teachers and original investigators forms one of the most creditable chapters of our early history, and unques tionably paved the way for those later scientific achievements' of which as a nation we may well be proud. But the chief interest attaches to\ the English-speaking settlers and emigrants, who laid the foundations for the building up of the nation, which now extends across the continent, and occupies that vast territory which, in all its unknown extent, European monarchs once Claimed each as his own domain. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the West and the Pioneers Permit me to enlarge upon this view of the West by suggest ing that it is something more than a geographical area - some thing apart from mountains and rivers and prairies and plains. My thought has been aptly expressed by a recent writer, ' who declares that the West has no fixed geographical limits like the South and New England. It is something more than a geograph ical term. Like Boston, it is a state of mind. There are moun tains and rivers and oceans within the limits of which this state of mind is preeminently to be found, but it is to be recognized in other regions as well. You can tell a Westerner as you can tell a Southerner, sometimes by his speech, always by his attitude to ward life. The best definition of this greater West which I am now at. Tempting to suggest, is brie y this: The West is where a man is; the East is where he or his father came from. The West is the frontier; it stands for the latest epoch, the most recent stage in the progressive history of mankind. The West is vitality, progress, creation personified. Thus the history of the West becomes the story of evolving, developing, progressive mankind the story of the pioneers, to which America has contributed the latest chapter. As a locality the West may be shifting, but as a state of mind it is America in the making. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Pioneer, 1843, Vol. 2 IN presenting this volume to its readers, it is perhaps necessary just to say that the objects presented in the first volume will be pursued with increased ardor, and, it is to be hoped, with better effect. We have become, if possible, more thoroughly convinced of the necessity that exists for a work of this kind. It is our intention not to continue articles from one number to another where it can be avoided. In order to enable us to give long and interesting articles entire, but most especially to favor subscribers, we have arranged to increase the size of each number: for particulars, see volume I, page 440. Our American Chronology and Table of Indian Tribes must necessarily be continued; and when these reach one hundred years nearer our time, not only the tables themselves but the work also, will become more interesting. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Original Contributions to the American Pioneer Although no attack was ever made on the fort by the Indians, yet they often appeared on the hill in its rear, which commanded a full view of its interior. From this elevation they often watched the movements of the inhabitants as they went out to work in their gar dens and adjoining fields, and several were killed within gun shot of the garrison. Of these tragical events no one possesses more inter est than that ia which the Hon. R. J. Meigs, late governor of Ohio, was engaged - it is as follows. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Horace Greeley and Other Pioneers of American Socialism This volume - Horace Greeley and other Pioneers of American Socialism - is neither biographical nor scientific, in the full sense of those words. Yet it partakes of both characters, albeit a sociological olla podrida with a modicum of seasoning a la doctrinaire. It has been written, however, with distinctly positive objects in mental view. During the many years that I have been a Constitutional State Socialist I have found myself confronted with two serious obstacles blocking the path of my attempts to arouse my fellow American citizens from their political and economic lethargy. One of these hindrances has been willful literary misrepresentation and the other, woful ignorance of Social Science. The latter has been too frequently a result of the former. Strange as it may seem to minds of culture, the great majority of people in the United States still believe that Socialism and Anarchism are one and the same thing, never dreaming that there is a sharp distinction, if not an actual antagonism, - both theoretical and practical, - between the two.
