Book excerpt: 'Reminiscences of a South African Pioneer' is an autobiography of William Charles Scully, a well-known South African author and magistrate who witnessed the discovery of gold and diamonds and the violence engendered by ethnic legislation. Scully takes readers on a journey through the magical period in South Africa when it was startled from the simplicity of its bucolic life by the discovery of gold and diamonds. He shares his own experiences as one of the light-hearted, haphazard pioneers who laid the foundation for the country's potential wealth.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pioneers in South Africa I have been asked to write a series of works which should deal with "real adventures", in parts of the world either wild and uncontrolled by any civilized government, or at any rate regions full of dangers, of wonderful discoveries; in which the daring and heroism of white men (and sometimes of white women) stood out clearly against backgrounds of unfamiliar landscapes, peopled with strange nations, savage tribes, dangerous beasts, or wonderful birds. These books would again and again illustrate the first coming of the white race into regions inhabited by people of a different type, with brown, black, or yellow skins; how the European was received, and how he treated these races of the soil which gradually came under his rule owing to his superior knowledge, weapons, wealth, or powers of persuasion. The books were to tell the plain truth, even if here and there they showed the white man to have behaved badly, or if they revealed the fact that the American Indian, the Negro, the Malay, the black Australian was sometimes cruel and treacherous. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fifty Years in South Africa: Being Some Recollections and Reflections of a Veteran Pioneer N 0 one can read the Chapters on game and shooting without being convinced that although a hunter for the market the author is a thorough Sportsman. Of personal adventures he is slow to write, remarking that one episode is very much the same as another; many sportsmen will regret that one who has killed so many lions and much other large game is so reticent on the subject of his sporting exploits, but those who intend visiting South Africa in search Of Sport will read with greater profit the particulars he gives Of the game-lands, and his remarks on the subject Of game pre servation should be borne in mind by those who have the interest Of South Africa at heart. TO the Boer large game has been a source of wealth, and its rapid extinction in the Transvaal will probably result at no distant date in a trek of the Boer stock-raisers to districts within British territory, and this must react on the division of parties within the Transvaal and so has a political as well as an economical aspect. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Life Time in South Africa: Being the Recollections of the First Premier of Natal The pages which follow are not intended in any way to deal exhaustively with what is known as The South African Problem. They claim to be nothing more than a series of cameos of the past, extending back over a period of fifty years, and covering the life and growth of a British Colony from its birth to the developments of to-day. It is hoped that these sketches (some of which have already appeared in the pages of Cornhill Magazine) may serve to show not only how the Empire of Great Britain has been and is being extended in the wild places of the earth, but how valid and unassailable is the title by which that Empire holds its position of paramountcy in South Africa. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Outspan: Tales of South Africa The charm Of the life is indescribable, and none who have tasted it ever weary Of it, ever forget it, or cease to feel the longing to return when once they have quitted it. It was in '91, the year after the pioneers cut their way through the Bush, with Selous to guide them, and occupied Mashonaland. We followed their trail and lived again their anxious nights and days, when they, a small handful in a dense Bush, at the mercy Of the Matabele thousands, did not know at what hour they would be pounced on and massacred. In addition to his work as an author, his paid work was principally as a magistrate in Springfontein, South Africa, as well as in Namaqualand and the Transkei. His last position before retirement was as Chief Magistrate of Port Elizabeth, one of South Africa's larger cities. He organised the building of "New Brighton", a township for aboriginal African people in Port Elizabeth. At the time it was regarded as very progressive-a pleasant place to live. His novel Daniel Vananda describes the violence engendered by the ethnic legislation of the time. Similarly, Kafir Stories contains stories that are generally sympathetic with the aboriginal African peoples of South Africa.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Among the Zulus: The Adventures of Hans Sterk, South African Hunter and Pioneer Nearly twenty-five years have elapsed since the following pages were written, and events have since then transpired in South Africa, which have verified the accuracy of the statements made in this book. The courage and skill of the Zulus have been proved to our cost, and had those who managed affairs in the Zulu war been better acquainted with the sotermed savages to whom they were opposed, they would not have committed the fatal error of underrating the enemy, or of imagining that to lager the waggons, and to take every precaution against a rush of overwhelming numbers, was an indication of cowardice. The Boers with whom my experience was gained are fairly described in these pages, and were of the same class, as those who ascended Majuba Hill. When in Nova Scotia before the Boer war, I was laughed at by more than one officer, when I stated that the Boer was a formidable enemy who must be dealt with cautiously. I was assured that a corporal's guard would cause all the Boers in the country to ride or run away. Knowing this to be the opinion of many officers high in authority, it was not very difficult to prophecy the disasters that occurred. This book is merely a tale, but I have endeavoured to describe with accuracy certain historical events, and also to give a correct idea of the Zulu, and Boer, as I found them. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some South African Recollections These recollections of a page in South African history have been written as a record for my children of the part played by their father in the Reform move ment in the Transvaal, as they were at the time too young to understand or appreciate all he did and suffered for the good cause. I have endeavoured to explain the origin of that movement, and why, for the moment, it failed. I venture to publish what I have written, as I am led to believe there are many people interested in the subject, but not sufficiently informed as to the true course of events, who would be glad to read the testimony of a South African. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recollections of Adventures: Pioneering and Development in South Africa, 1850-1911 At the request of my life's friend and dear companion, my staunch, loving little wife, and our dear children, I have given myself the task of writing a resume of facts and incidents which have come to my knowledge during a residence in South Africa since August, 1850. I will avoid personalities as much as possible and will merely mention the part I have taken personally in the works of development, especially in the Transvaal, to give an idea of the position from which I have viewed passing events. I have avoided statistics which have been amply supplied by blue-books, newspapers, and other writers. I have tried to condense this synopsis, and find that it has, nevertheless, grown in dimensions far beyond what I intended, and yet a vast amount of pertinent matter had to be left out, and I find that although most distasteful to me, in writing from memory of personal experience, the Ego is unduly prominent if perhaps unavoidable.
