Book excerpt: In the predawn darkness of Friday, February 1, 1861, aboard a westbound train, Abraham Lincoln, left Coles County for the last time. Elected to the presidency the previous November and not yet having departed his home in Springfield for Washington, D.C., to be inaugurated, he had come on January 30 to visit his stepmother, Sarah Bush Lincoln, and to say farewell to friends and family in Charleston and the surrounding area. He would never return. Having led the United States through the Civil War, he would die at the hand of assassin John Wilkes Booth in Washington’s Ford Theater on another Friday—April 14, 1865. This book by history scholar Charles H. Coleman explores Lincoln’s close-knit family ties in and connection to Coles County, located in east-central Illinois: the home of his father and stepmother, Thomas and Sarah Bush Lincoln, as well as his stepbrother John and his stepsisters, Sarah Elizabeth and Matilda, along with their families, and where Lincoln himself was a frequent visitor during his lifetime.

Book excerpt: Just as an archeologist can reassemble pot shards and draw inferences about the civilization that produced it, I've examined a mass of verbal chunks left by Lincoln and people around him. I've sorted jumbled piles of fragments, restored them, and pieced them together in a way that reveals the speakers' world. --Richard Lawrence Miller, from the preface Quoting from eyewitness accounts, Richard Lawrence Miller allows Lincoln and his contemporaries to tell the story of this monumental American and bring a fascinating era of American history to life. The book covers Lincoln's birth through his first election to the Illinois legislature in 1834. Subsequent volumes will deal with Lincoln's life up to the White House years.

When lots were offered for sale in Danville on April 1, 1827, a fine spring day, so many rattlers came out of their winter quarters that the sale had to be postponed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stories of Pioneer Days in La Salle County, Illinois, and Poster Designs Commemorating the Washington Bi-Centennial 1932: By Grammar Grade Pupils of Village and Rural Schools, La Salle County, Illinois As a part of their participation in the celebration of the Washington Bi centennial this year the pupils in the rural and village schools were invited to design posters commemorative of the Father of His Country, and the eighth graders were privileged to try their hand again at telling a story of pioneer days. At the time the invitation was extended, it was expected that at least two hundred of the 1932 posters and stories could be reproduced in pamphlet form. But the financial stringency still continues and it is impossible to realize our expectations. Hence, many an interesting story and many an excellent poster had to be omitted in this pamphlet, much to the chagrin of the county superintendent and, no doubt, to the disappointment of many a worthy pupil. In the estimation of the county superintendent nothing that these smaller schools have done in recent years so definitely marks their praiseworthy ad vancement as the writing of these stories and the designing of these posters, for both are of the creative type that evidence intellectual growth. Likewise, both are on a markedly higher plane than was thought possible for grammar grade pupils only a few years ago. It is ardently hoped, however, that they represent a new era in school achievement, and that they but pave the way to even greater skill in the fine art of story telling. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Illinois Pioneer Days This is Illinois' Centennial Year, a time most fitting to look back down the years and think of the labors and sacrifices of those who came into a land of savages and transformed it into a land of the highest type of civilization. Much of the wonderful history of the brave pioneers of these mighty days is forever lost. With the idea of helping to preserve that yet known and transmit it to the rising generation, we are presenting this little volume. We offer no excuse and no other explanation for its publication. If those who read this book are led to a greater realization of the wonderful work of the pioneer men and women, it will have served its purpose. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pioneers of Coles County Illinois When David Dryden started to Illinois from Farmington, Bedford County, Tennessee, he put my grandmother, Hannah Eveline Dry den on one of the horses, not hitched to the covered wagon, to help drive the cattle they were bringing to a new and strange country they had never seen be fore. This was June 10, 1834 and when my grandmother was 98 years old, she told the story of their journey northward as follows.
