Book Synopsis The Emerging Female Citizen by : Theresa Ann Smith

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eighteenth-century Spanish women were not idle bystanders during one of Europe's most dynamic eras. As Theresa Ann Smith skillfully demonstrates in this lively and absorbing book, Spanish intellectuals, calling for Spain to modernize its political, social, and economic institutions, brought the question of women's place to the forefront, as did women themselves. In explaining how both discourse and women's actions worked together to define women's roles in the nation, The Emerging Female Citizen not only illustrates the rising visibility of women, but also reveals the complex processes that led to women's relatively swift exit from most public institutions in the early 1800s. As artists, writers, and reformers, Spanish women took up pens, joined academies and economic societies, formed tertulias—similar to French salons—and became active in the burgeoning public discourse of Enlightenment. In analyzing the meaning of women's presence in diverse centers of Enlightenment, Smith offers a new interpretation of the dynamics among political discourse, social action, and gender ideologies.

Download or read book Goya & Italy written by Francisco Goya and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Around 1770 or 1771, Francisco Goya went to Italy for roughly one year. Although it is not known whether he was actually fleeing the Spanish Inquisition, as an artist of his time he was certainly undertaking a pilgrimage to a country in which many (non-Italian) artists had completed their apprenticeships. Myths proliferate about Goya's Italian period. There are tales of his working as an acrobat, romancing a nun and being offering a job as court painter to Catherine the Great. Whatever the truth of these, he certainly came face to face with much inspirational art: Raphael and Michelangelo at the Vatican, Tiepolo, Correggio's frescoes in Parma, plus the Belvedere Torso of Apollonius and the Farnese Hercules of Glykon (both of which he sketched). During this stint, Goya also entered a painting in the Parma Academy competition, winning second prize. But upon his return to Spain, Goya was an artist transformed, liberated from Neoclassicism and free to pursue his own wilder painterly imaginings. By 1774, Goya had gone from anonymity to become Saragossa's most prosperous artist. What was he doing during this murky Italian jaunt? Goya and Italy is the first book to consider this question at length. In its pages, historians have collaborated to recreate the climate of eighteenth-century Rome, to postulate Goya's place in it and to assess the legacy of this shrouded episode in his biography. It will prove an invaluable document for Goya fans.

Book Synopsis Luca Giordano at the Museo Nacional Del Prado by : Andrés Úbeda de los Cobos
Download or read book Luca Giordano at the Museo Nacional Del Prado written by Andrés Úbeda de los Cobos and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In spite of the huge number of paintings by this artist in the Prado, Luca Giordano (Naples, 1634-1705) is seldom studied and is therefore little known to the public, who often do not see beyond the cliché of his prodigious speed of execution. The present volume sets out to remedy this lack of knowledge. It begins with three introductory essays that set the Prado paintings in the context of Giordano's life, survey the painter's critical fortunes from his own time to the present day, and provide information on his Spanish period, which lasted from 1692 to 1702. These initial texts also look into specific issues, among them Giordano's relationship with his dealers, and more controversial aspects such as the commercial strategies he used to disseminate his work. The second part of the book "the catalogue raisonné proper" consists of entries for each of the paintings studied, including information on their provenance, condition, restoration history, related literature, iconography, visual sources and critical fortunes. It features a total of 99 paintings executed on different supports and in various media which span all the stages of his production except the period following his return to Naples in 1702. This catalogue is the result of many years of thorough research conducted by its author, Andrés Úbeda de los Cobos, Deputy Director for Conservation and Research at the Museo del Prado. He is a specialist on Luca Giordano and has published various articles and books on the artist's works, such as a study on the fresco of the Apotheosis of the Spanish Monarchy in the Casón del Buen Retiro in 2008, a project which, in a sense, has been brought to a successful completion by this book.
Book Synopsis The Influence of Italian Culture on the Sevillian Golden Age of Painting by : Rafael Japón
Download or read book The Influence of Italian Culture on the Sevillian Golden Age of Painting written by Rafael Japón and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2022-03-20 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the cultural exchange between Italy and Spain in the seventeenth century, examining Spanish collectors’ predilection for Italian painting and its influence on Spanish painters. Focused on collecting and using a novel methodology, this volume studies how the painters of the Sevillian school, including Francisco Pacheco, Diego Velázquez, Alonso Cano and Bartolomé Esteban Murillo, perceived and were influenced by Italian painting. Through many examples, it is shown how the presence in Andalusia of various works and copies of works by artists such as Michelangelo, Caravaggio and Guido Reni inspired famous compositions by these Spanish artists. In addition, the book delves into the historical, political and social context of this period. The book will be of interest to scholars working in art history, Renaissance studies, and Italian and Spanish history.
