Book excerpt: Children's Sermons to Go is a collection of 52 sermons for children. Each sermon first gives a Bible verse and then illustrates that verse with a short anecdote. Each sermon lists easy-to-find household materials the preacher or worship leader can bring to give a visual demonstration that illustrates the truths presented in the sermon. The distinguishing feature of this sermon collection, however, is the small, inexpensive gifts or trinkets - mementos - that each child carries away from the children's sermon, thus giving the children a concrete object that helps them remember the message given in that day's children's sermon.

Book excerpt: Fans of Surviving Savannah by Patti Callahan, The Book of Lost Friends by Lisa Wingate, and Almost Sisters by Joshilyn Jackson will enjoy Folly Park. Are we ever able to escape the past? Should we be allowed to? Though deeply ashamed of her slaveholding heritage, Temple Preston’s sense of duty and bittersweet memories tie her to Folly Park, her family’s crumbling ancestral plantation in Virginia. Now a cash-strapped tourist attraction, Folly Park was once the home of Confederate General Thomas Temple Smith, a southern war hero who died under mysterious circumstances. Temple is pursuing a plan to secure the house museum’s future when her summer research assistant, a Black PhD student, uncovers a remarkable secret: the general’s wife gave birth to a biracial baby while he was away fighting in the Civil War. This discovery turns Temple’s quiet, insulated life upside down, and—along with further revelations about the past that come to light in the ensuing weeks—fuels the growing tension in her hometown as a Black activist and Temple’s own race-baiting brother square off in a local campaign for mayor. Faced with threats and betrayal, Temple discovers who she really is—and how much she’s willing to lose to tell the truth.

Book excerpt: “Samantha King explains how, beyond being an all-too-frequent and still-too-lethal disease for many women, breast cancer is a corporate dream come true.” —Herizons “Fascinating. King’s deft and thoughtful interpretation of the pink ribbon phenomenon is an important wake-up call. Going against the grain, she takes a clear-eyed look at a trend that often seems to outshine the disease that put it on the map.” —Women’s Review of Books “King’s criticisms of breast-cancer philanthropy provide a new means of looking at one of our culture’s most celebrated causes. For anyone who has ever squirreled away yogurt lids for the cause, Pink Ribbons, Inc. is food for thought.” —Bitch “A fascinating read for anyone whose life has been touched by breast cancer.” —Curve “Breast cancer advocacy is being transformed from meaningful civic participation into purchasing products. To understand the personal, social, and political costs, read this book.” —Barbara Brenner, Executive Director of Breast Cancer Action In Pink Ribbons, Inc., Samantha King traces how breast cancer has been transformed from a stigmatized disease and individual tragedy to a market-driven industry of survivorship. Here, for the first time, King questions the effectiveness and legitimacy of privately funded efforts to stop the epidemic among American women. Highly revelatory-at times shocking-Pink Ribbons, Inc. challenges the commercialization of the breast cancer movement. Samantha King is associate professor of physical and health education and women’s studies at Queen’s University, in Kingston, Ontario

Book excerpt: This study develops the important work carried out on American literature through the frameworks of transnational, transatlantic, and trans-local studies to ask what happens when these same aspects become intrinsic to the critical narrative. Much cultural criticism since the 1990s has sought to displace perceptions of American exceptionalism with broader notions of Atlanticism, transnationalism, world-system, and trans-localism as each has redefined the US and the world more generally. This collection shows how the remapping of America in terms of global networks, and as a set of particular localities, or even glocalities, now plays out in Americanist scholarship, reflecting on the critical consequences of the spatial turn in American literary and cultural studies. Spanning twentieth and twenty-first century American poetry, fiction, memoir, visual art, publishing, and television, and locating the US in Caribbean, African, Asian, European, and other contexts, this volume argues for a re-modelling of American-ness with the transnational as part of its innate rhetoric. It includes discussions of travel, migration, disease, media, globalization, and countless other examples of inflowing. Essays focus on subjects tracing the contemporary contours of the transnational, such as the role of the US in the rise of the global novel, the impact of Caribbean history on American thought (and vice versa), transatlantic cultural and philosophical genealogies and correspondences, and the exchanges between the poetics of American space and those of other world spaces. Asking questions about the way the American eye has traversed and consumed the objects and cultures of the world, but how that world is resistant, this volume will make an important contribution to American and Transatlantic literary studies.

Book excerpt: “Our Small Town World” is a collection of forty-four feature stories I have written for my hometown weekly newspaper, The Express, over the past eleven years. When I began this venture, my goal was to bring to light the history, heritage and heart of these small communities that to me are the personification and the essence of this great country we live in. And America is a great country because of the hard-working and unassuming people who are the rocks upon which it was built. Too often, the good things that go on in the small towns that are off the radar go unnoticed and unheralded. But we are America. We in the small town world are the doers, the helpers, the protectors, the caregivers, the keepers of the flame. I may live in a small town world, but in eleven years I have had little trouble finding stories worth writing or neighbors worth writing about. It has been my privilege and my honor to be able to record just a few of the many great happenings and the many great people that define our own small town world.

Book excerpt: What do you do when the most joyful place on earth turns into a living nightmare? Ray and Bella are standing in line, impatiently waiting so she can meet her favourite character, Baroness Emberella, when things go horribly wrong. While Ray’s making one of the most difficult decisions of his life, Vanessa and Tom are separated as they try to get their twin boys to safety. In the meantime, Tyler and Michelle’s three-month dating anniversary has become a teenage tragedy, and Adrian struggles with looking after her younger brother. What starts as a typical day at the best amusement park in the universe quickly turns into chaos as a virus spreads like wildfire through the patrons and staff. As the shrinking number of uninfected fight for survival against the insatiable undead, the struggle to escape the park becomes increasingly difficult. How do they choose the right path while dealing with panic, loss, grief, anxiety, and uncertainty? Will they survive, or will they succumb to the hordes of undead shambling throughout the rides and attractions? In this suspenseful and horror-filled parody, author Kat Chartier brings a new twist to a tale of blood, gore, zombies, and theme parks.

Book excerpt: In the springtime, park-goers hear the familiar squeaks of his balloon cart as he moves along the paths. He hands out free balloons, choosing the perfect colors and imparting advice and wisdom. There's a touch of magic there-an answered question with each balloon, a changed expression with each color-but only Cammie York sees the full picture. She journals about him obsessively, afraid to ask him for a balloon, until one day she does. Then, The Balloon Man moves from her fairytale stories of him to real-life person . . . a person with faults and mysteries. When The Balloon Man tucks the ribbon of a pink balloon into Cammie's hand, she feels the spark of a new adventure. Cammie insists his balloons are magic, especially when she learns The Balloon Man does not know his father but has one clue to his identity-a green spiral magic symbol. The clues to The Balloon Man's identity lead onward, to an enchanted inn with magic wallpaper, then to a secret underworld of true magicians. During the journey, Cammie and The Balloon Man begin to fall in love, sharing pink balloons of romance, red balloons of love. But when The Balloon Man finally accepts his destiny as true magic man, the two learn that the magic that has brought them together is also what may tear them apart.
