Book excerpt: In The Netherlands, Belgium and other European countries, manganese is removed by conventional groundwater treatment with aeration and rapid (sand) filtration. Such a treatment process is easy to operate, cost effective and sustainable, because it does not make use of strong oxidants such as O3, Cl2, ClO2 and KMnO4 with the associated risk of by-product formation and over or under dosing. However, application of aeration-filtration is also facing drawbacks, especially the long ripening time of filter media. Due to the long ripening time, water companies have to waste large volumes of treated water, making this process less sustainable. Also, costs associated with filter media ripening (man power, electricity, operational and analysis costs) are high. Therefore decreasing the filter ripening time, regarding manganese removal is a big issue. Although already extended research has been carried out into manganese removal, the controlling mechanisms, especially of the start up face of filter media ripening, are not fully understood yet. The emphasis of this thesis is to provide a better understanding of the mechanisms involved in the ripening of virgin filter media, regarding manganese removal and how to shorten or completely eliminate the long ripening period of filters with virgin material. This thesis therefore highlights the role of the formation of a manganese oxide coating on virgin filter media. Characterization and identification revealed that the responsible manganese oxide for an effective manganese removal was Birnessite. It was found that Birnessite, formed at the beginning of the ripening process was of a biological origin. Based on the knowledge that manganese removal in conventional groundwater treatment is initiated biologically, long ripening times may be reduced by creating conditions favouring the growth of manganese oxidizing bacteria, e.g., by limiting the back wash frequency and / or intensity. Additionally, this thesis also shows that the use of freshly prepared manganese oxide, containing Birnessite, can completely eliminate filter media ripening time.

Book excerpt: Reduced iron and manganese in drinking water can cause aesthetic concerns and manganese has potential neurotoxic effects. Biofiltration is a proven but poorly understood method for removal of manganese from drinking water. In this research media selection for biofiltration is investigated in bench-top and pilot-scale experiments. Treatments using sand as filter media had higher rates of manganese removal, and pilot-scale sand filters supported 36,666 and 25,000 colony forming units per gram (CFU/g) of media while anthracite and recycled glass supported 11,111 and 6,349 CFU/g of media, respectively. Biological filtration proved to be an effective treatment option for removal of iron and manganese for the municipality where it was piloted. Sand filter removal rates ranged from 88.0% to 91.9% for iron and 84.3% to 87% for manganese. Canadian Drinking Water Quality Guidelines (CDWQG) were met for 44 of 44 samples for iron and for 35 of 44 samples for manganese. Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) sequencing indicated that manganese oxidising bacteria (MOB) accounted for 4.0% of total bacteria and that 10 phyla made up 95.5% of the bacteria in all filter samples.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this thesis is to propose an innovative system to integrate biologicallycatalyzed oxidation of manganese with ultrafiltration membranes for drinking water treatment. The published literature dealing specifically with biological processes in membrane filtration systems is very limited. The literature review is divided into two related subthemes. The first part of the literature review concentrates on recent advances in biologically-mediated oxidation of manganese, while the second addresses the necessary conditions to operate a membrane filtration system including how biofouling can affect performance. Manganese in drinking water causes taste and odor problems as well as other nuisance problems such as discoloration of laundry and staining of fixtures. Manganese can also cause severe corrosion problems. Biological manganese oxidation is currently being explored and evaluated by different researchers and institutions such as the American Water Works Association (AWWA) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). iii Chlorine oxidation of manganese has become increasingly problematic due to the EPA rule on disinfectant byproducts (DBP), making it necessary to find alternative processes. Biologically-catalyzed oxidation of manganese is still not fully understood and a standardized process that can be deployed to treat waters with high concentrations of manganese has yet to be developed. It is thus necessary to build a pilot system that can later be scaled up for field application. Based on findings from studies by other researchers, a full-scale system was designed based on a 2 million gallon per day (MGD) flow rate in order to understand the footprint such a system would have compared to a traditional water treatment plant. A pilot-scale system was designed based on the full-scale system in order to provide a basis for possible further research and laboratory testing of the system. The pilot-scale design shows that it is possible to build a biologically-catalyzed manganese removal treatment system integrated with ultrafiltration membranes with a relatively small footprint. However, the design presented here is based on many presumptions that remain to be confirmed once the pilot-scale system is built. With the data from the pilot-scale systems, adjustments can be made to the system for eventual field implementation.
