Book excerpt: This project evaluated several methods for measuring pilot performance in a general aviation simulator and examined the relationship between performance and workload. An Automated Performance Measurement (APM) system was designed for use in a flight simulator which was instrumented for digital data collection. Performance rating was accomplished by three independent observers. Workload was assessed using a real-time subjective input system with which pilots provided workload estimates every minute. Two groups of pilots participated in the experiment: ten professional high-time pilots and ten recently qualified instrument pilots. Both the APM and the observer ratings showed significant performance differences between the two pilot groups. The automated technique showed more of a spread, however, among individuals in the professional (masters) group. The newly qualified pilots (journeymen) reported significantly higher workload than their masters counterparts and their performance was significantly worse.

Book excerpt: Flight simulators provide a complete quantitative record of a pilot's flying performance. Evaluating this record is complicated by the volume of data and by its fine detail, dozens of flight parameters, sampled many times per second. Automated performance measurement systems (APMS) reduce the volume of data to an amount which is manageable and understandable. The usual APMS is aircraft state oriented. The APMS keys on aircraft state (e.g., X-Y position, bank angle) to define intervals over which performance data are integrated. This PAMS is relatively insensitive to pilots' intentions and so may average performances which had differing objectives, based only on their having occurred at the same point during the task sequence. An alternative APMS has been developed which is piloted oriented. This APMS defines measurement intervals based on control inputs. Control inputs are identified by discrete changes in flight path. These intervals are psychologically relevant in that they begin with a goal-directed control input and end with a countervailing input. By relating performance in the pilot defined intervals to state defined intervals, it is possible to quantify performance on given flight segments (e.g., a level turn), and to specify factors which lead to a given level of performance. In recognition of the need for information concerning the impact of these new systems on pilot performance, the FAA has initiated a two-phased research program devoted to planning and conducting exploratory evaluations that will assess the ability of general aviation pilots to operate EFIS-equipped aircraft. The results of the first phase of this project are presented in this report. The objectives of this phase were to determine the specific goals of the exploratory evaluations and to develop general guidance--i.e., a conceptual approach--for their conduct. The conceptual approach is described in terms of (1) the information needed from the planned evaluations, (2) the general design of the overall study, (3) requirements for the performance measurement systems that would be employed to collect data and for the analysis of that data, (4) requirements for test facilities and equipment, and (5) procedures for selecting and training evaluation subjects. While the conceptual approach that was developed is specific to the planned research, it is discussed and described in general terms to increase its utility as general guidance for planning evaluations of pilot performance. It was assumed that superior flying performance in the aircraft or the simulator has several characteristics which are reflected by available flight parameters. These include (a) maintaining certain aircraft state parameters, such as airspeed or altitude, close to some defined criterion value, (b) avoiding excessive rates and acceleration forces so that the maneuver is executed smoothly, (c) accomplishing these objectives with the least amount of effort; that is, by minimizing control inputs, and (d) not exceeding procedural or safety limits established for the maneuver. To date, the following scenarios have been implemented on the ASPT: (a) Transition Tasks - Straight and Level, Airspeed Changes, Turns, Climbs/Descents; (b) Takeoff/Approach/Landing Tasks - Takeoffs, Tech Order Climbs, Slow Flight, Configuration Changes, Straight-in Approaches, Overhead Patterns, Touch-and-Go's; (c) Instrument Tasks - Rate Climbs/Descents, Vertical S-A, Vertical S-D, GCA, Proceed Direct to VOR; (d) Aerobatics - Aileron Rolls, Barrel Roll, Loop, Split S, Cloverleaf, Cuban 8, Lazy 8; and (e) Formation - Fingertip.

Book excerpt: Personal computer based flight simulators are expanding opportunities for providing low-cost pilot training. One advantage of these devices is the opportunity to incorporate instructional features into training scenarios that might not be cost effective with earlier systems. Research was conducted to evaluate the utility of different instructional features using a coordinated level turn as an aircraft maneuvering task. In study I, a comparison was made between automated computer grades of performance with certified flight instructors grades. Every one of the six student volunteers conducted a flight with level turns at two different bank angles. The automated computer grades were based on prescribed tolerances on bank angle, airspeed and altitude. Two certified flight instructors independently examined the video tapes of heads up and instrument displays of the flights and graded them. The comparison of automated grades with the instructors grades was based on correlations between them. In study II, a 2x2 between subjects factorial design was used to devise and conduct an experiment. Comparison was made between real time training and above real time training and between feedback and no feedback in training. The performance measure to monitor progress in training was based on deviations in bank angle and altitude. The performance measure was developed after completion of the experiment including the training and test flights. It was not envisaged before the experiment.
