Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Declaration of Independence states that one of our unalienable rights is the pursuit of happiness. It is clear from the records of both Virginia and Massachusetts at the time that this phrase meant the right to privately own property. However, what is also clear is that the unalienable right we have is to pursue happiness and not obtain happiness. Today Americans often mistake the meaning of this phrase and think that their government owes them happiness in all flavors, to be claimed by them at any time. What Leo Martin has done is to clearly articulate the meaning of this phrase by going to the root of our country, the Pilgrims. No other people at the time of our nation's initial development portray, as families and a migrating Church, the meaning of pursuing happiness under the Hand of a Sovereign God better than this tiny band! Though never in a majority and never wealthy; they considered themselves to be rich in spiritual treasure. Though they sought no shrine to honor themselves, a nation has honored them as the root of its liberty though in our day they have been largely forgotten. It is time we returned to what truly made America great. It is time we remembered the nature of the liberties brought by the Pilgrims in their simple faith, heart-felt devotion and iron-clad character. Though the seeds planted by them eventually grew into a tree much larger and with leaves a bit different in color than they may have anticipated, their love of family, their stand for freedom, and their faith in God stand tall and point in the direction toward which our nation can recover from her amnesia. Let this little book be read and re-read to your children and grandchildren, that the stories of our past may come alive again.-Dr. Paul JehleExecutive Director -Plymouth Rock Foundation

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This December evening, the imagination, by a law of contrast, recalls another December night two hundred and seventy years ago. The circle of darkness is drawn about a little group of Pilgrims who have come ashore on a sandy and inhospitable coast. On one side is a vexed and wintry sea, three thousand miles of tossing waves and tempest, beyond which lie the home, the hedgerows and cottages, the church towers, the libraries and universities, the habits and associations of an old civilization, the strongest and dearest ties that can entwine around a human heart, abandoned now definitely and forever by these wanderers; on the other side a wintry forest of unknown extent, without highways, the lair of wild beasts, impenetrable except by trails known only to the savages, whose sudden appearance and disappearance adds mystery and terror to the impression the imagination has conjured up of the wilderness.

A former BMA Medical Book of the Year award winner, this book provides a sociological analysis of major areas of mental health and illness. The book considers contemporary and historical aspects of sociology, social psychiatry, policy and therapeutic law to help students develop an in-depth and critical approach to this complex subject.New developments for the fifth edition include: Brand new chapter on prisons, criminal justice and mental health Expanded coverage of stigma, class and social networks Updated material on the Mental Capacity Act, Mental Health Act and the Deprivation of Liberty A classic in its field, this well established textbook offers a rich and well-crafted overview of mental health and illness unrivalled by competitors and is essential reading for students and professionals studying a range of medical sociology and health-related courses. It is also highly suitable for trainee mental health workers in the fields of social work, nursing, clinical psychology and psychiatry. "Rogers and Pilgrim go from strength to strength! This fifth edition of their classic text is not only a sociology but also a psychology, a philosophy, a history and a polity. It combines rigorous scholarship with radical argument to produce incisive perspectives on the major contemporary questions concerning mental health and illness. The authors admirably balance judicious presentation of the range of available understandings with clear articulation of their own positions on key issues. This book is essential reading for everyone involved in mental health work." Christopher Dowrick, Professor of Primary Medical Care, University of Liverpool, UK "Pilgrim and Rogers have for the last twenty years given us the key text in the sociology of mental health and illness. Each edition has captured the multi-layered and ever changing landscape of theory and practice around psychiatry and mental health, providing an essential tool for teachers and researchers, and much loved by students for the dexterity in combining scope and accessibility. This latest volume, with its focus on community mental health, user movements criminal justice and the need for inter-agency working, alongside the more classical sociological critiques around social theories and social inequalities, demonstrates more than ever that sociological perspectives are crucial in the understanding and explanation of mental and emotional healthcare and practice, hence its audience extends across the related disciplines to everyone who is involved in this highly controversial and socially relevant arena." Gillian Bendelow, School of Law Politics and Sociology, University of Sussex, UK "From the classic bedrock studies to contemporary sociological perspectives on the current controversy over which scientific organizations will define diagnosis, Rogers and Pilgrim provide a comprehensive, readable and elegant overview of how social factors shape the onset and response to mental health and mental illness. Their sociological vision embraces historical, professional and socio-cultural context and processes as they shape the lives of those in the community and those who provide care; the organizations mandated to deliver services and those that have ended up becoming unsuitable substitutes; and the successful and unsuccessful efforts to improve the lives through science, challenge and law." Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For at least the first two centuries following its publication, John Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress was among the most formative and beloved books England contributed to the Western tradition, second only to the English Bible in popularity and influence. In this important new study, Kathleen Swaim recognizes Bunyan as a major Puritan cultural figure and Pilgrim's Progress as a multilayered locus of cultural, historical, and theological, as well as literary, systems. Her work maps shifts of cultural and theological emphasis as Christian's focus on the Word and Protestant martyrdom in Part I (1678) gives way to Christiana's characteristic emphasis on good works and the material reality of the Church in the world in Part II (1684). Swaim's study locates Part I of Pilgrim's Progress within the discourses of allegory, myth, the biblical and sermonic word, and the conversion narrative tradition. It locates Part II within modern social constructions, particularly those of gender, and within contemporary church practices and emerging new modes of representation. It draws upon Bunyan's numerous other works to explicate Pilgrim's Progress as a mirror of evolving late seventeenth-century Puritan culture.

The birth was one month premature and he weighted a whopping 2 and pounds. After 2 weeks in an incubator, he was taken home and placed in his first crib, a top drawer of the bedroom bureau. Three years later he and his older brother and sister lost their parents and were placed in foster homes. Milton spent the next 15 years in 12 different foster homes. After graduating from high school and earning a scholarship to Michigan State University, he was only able to secure finances for one year, and spent the next 25 years working in a variety of sales jobs. He was married 3 times. He has 5 children and one step child. Milton met his third wife Christina in 1973 and they moved from Los Angeles to the Montana/Idaho area where he took a job working as a miner. For 3 years he worked 5,000 feet under ground in the Galina silver mine at Wallace Idaho. Latter he and Christina purchased a local locksmith business, which he made his career for the next 18 years, retiring as Master Locksmith and housing security specialist for The Evergreen State College at Olympia Washington, in 1998. He and his wife chose to spend their final years living in southern Mexico, near the City of Oaxaca. His beloved wife, of 33 years, Christina passed away in 2006 and 7 months later he was diagnosed with a very aggressive form of bladder cancer. After major surgery and 6 months of Chemo-therapy, he is cancer free. He now lives alone in a beautiful country setting surrounded by 100 tropical fruit trees in a 3 bedroom Bungalow on a walled in property. For transportation he has a small Chevy car and a Yamaha motor scooter to get around on for quick trips to the store. For company he has two dogs and a cat. In the tranquil atmosphere of this little bit of paradise he has decided to write essays dealing with what he feels are important spiritual topics that have been his quest for more than five decades.

Book excerpt: Separated from the Himalayan ranges, Mount Kailash stands majestically about 16500 feet above the sea level, on a flat plateau overlooking the lakes and plains of Tibet. Mount Kailash has never been scaled. Since time immemorial, the region surrounding Mount Kailash has been associated with mystical beings and the occult. Kailash is a symbol of faith and divinity for followers of four major religions of the world. Despite the hardships faced due to the high altitude and cold climate, the faithful have been circumambulating Mount Kailash for the past thousands of years for deliverance from defilements of past lives. Some circle Mount Kailash for great indulgences in the present life. Lake Mansarovar is a freshwater lake at the highest altitude on Earth and is the source of the four major rivers--Ganges, Brahmaputra, Indus and Sutlej-- of the Indian peninsula. There are recorded accounts of many saints who have endorsed the Kailash Mansarovar region as a region charged with spiritual energy, ideally suited to experiencing deep meditation and super-consciousness. This is the land of miraculous panacea herbs and the divine beings. This book is a travelogue with a difference: it not only gives a description of spiritual wandering in the most revered region of Kailash Mansarovar, but it also serves as a guide for the enthusiasts who are planning a pilgrimage to Kailash Mansarovar.
