Book excerpt: Integral abutment bridges have been used in the United States for decades. By eliminating expensive expansion joints, the piles supporting the end bent accommodate the total thermal movement of the bridge. Currently, integral bridges are designed based upon experience, and a rational design specification has not been developed. Furthermore, the interaction of the abutment, pile, and soil remains uncertain. A better understanding regarding the behavior of this system is needed. The objective of this research is to evaluate the behavior of the integral abutment-pile system and evaluate any limitations of its use. To achieve this objective, two phases of research were conducted. The first phase was a field study that investigated the in-service pile behavior of four integral abutment bridges. The second phase was an experimental study that was used to evaluate the capability of piles typically used in integral abutment bridges. Nine low-cycle, large amplitude lateral displacement pile tests were conducted. Throughout both phases, analytical investigations were also conducted. To develop simplified modeling techniques that sufficiently account for soil-pile interaction, the piles supporting abutments were analytically modeled and calibrated based on the field and experimental results. A parametric study was also performed with variables including pile type, pile orientation, axial load, pile length, and soil type. The results of these phases were evaluated and design recommendations were developed based on these results. Overall, the design recommendations provide for an extension in the length limits often used for integral bridges. The extension of these limits can result in a reduction in bridge construction and maintenance costs for a large number of structures that cannot currently be built using this structural system.

Book excerpt: Integral abutment (IA) construction has become the preferred method over conventional construction for use with typical highway bridges. However, the use of these structures is limited due to state mandated length and skew limitations. To expand their applicability, studies were implemented to define limitations supported by rational analysis rather than simply engineering judgment. Previous research investigations have resulted in larger length limits and an overall better understanding of these structures. However, questions still remain regarding IA behavior; specifically questions regarding long-term behavior and effects of skew. To better define the behavior of these structures, a study was implemented to specifically investigate the long term behavior of IA bridges. First, a field monitoring program was implemented to observe and understand the in-service behavior of three integral abutment bridges. The results of the field investigation were used to develop and calibrate analytical models that adequately capture the long-term behavior. Second, a single-span, quarter-scale integral abutment bridge was constructed and tested to provide insight on the behavior of highly skewed structures. From the acquired knowledge from both the field and laboratory investigations, a parametric analysis was conducted to characterize the effects of a broad range of parameters on the behavior of integral abutment bridges. This study develops an improved understanding of the overall behavior of IA bridges. Based on the results of this study, modified length and skew limitations for integral abutment bridge are proposed. In addition, modeling recommendations and guidelines have been developed to aid designers and facilitate the increased use of integral abutment bridges.

Book excerpt: In Maine, there are often cases where the depth to bedrock prohibits integral abutments bridges from being used. The goal of this research is to determine the feasibility of constructing integral abutments in conditions that cannot provide the fixed support conditions that are traditionally assumed. A finite element model was created that incorporates realistic constitutive and surface interaction models.

Book excerpt: The objective of this work is to develop a design method for Integral Abutment Bridges (IABs), such that more accurate predictions of pile response to vehicular loading can be made. This paper presents the results of field tests performed on piles which support an IAB. These results led to a recommended IAB design procedure which includes an in-situ lateral pile load test, the development of P-Y curves, and the establishment of non-linear soil spring constants for modelling IABs. A brief look at the soil-structure interaction (SSI) and mechanics of IABs, as well as a literature review of the evolution of the IAB design process, are included. Early works including the Winkler and elastic continuum theories lead to the establishment of solutions, which provide displacement and stress values used for design purposes. However, the advent of the home computer made Finite Element Modelling (FEM) a more viable and accurate approach to solving "beam on elastic subgrade" problems. A hybrid approach, combining FEM and Winkler theories (FEM-Winkler), has since become standard practice for designers of IABs throughout Canada. An example of such is presented herein. The coefficient of horizontal subgrade reaction, kh, from which are derived the stiffnesses of discrete soil springs used in the hybrid FEM-Winkler design process, is a variable that is difficult to estimate. Therefore, some structural and geotechnical engineers recommend conducting tests to better assess the actual lateral soil spring stiffnesses. Many of these tests, including those described in the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) Standard D3966, are designed to be conducted on expensive mock-up pile assemblies with similar characteristics to those planned for the production piles. An alternate and more economical approach, consisting of an in-situ lateral pile test conducted on a production pile, was conducted. A live load test to measure bridge deck deflection and pile strain was also performed, and both tests are presented herein. Based on the results of the in-situ lateral pile test, structural models were created with the structural software STAAD.Pro, and assumed values of linear lateral soil spring stiffnesses were used to match the pile head deflection and strain measured in the field. Initial estimates of spring stiffness were based on values of the variation of modulus of horizontal subgrade reaction (nh) that were recommended in the Canadian Highway Bridge Design Code (CHBDC) CAN CSA S6-14, and the Canadian Foundation Engineering Manual (CFEM,1992) for each of three (3) soil strata. These soil spring stiffnesses were found to be accurate at high soil strain, but much too flexible at low strain, which indicated soil non-linearity. Therefore, non-linear reaction-deflection (P-Y) curves were developed from the linear soil spring models, by noting the soil reaction at each discrete soil spring location, based on modelled soil/pile deflection. Non-linear soil springs were defined from the tangential stiffness of the P-Y curves, and these were used to refine a three-dimensional FEM-Winkler bridge model. A comparison of the model incorporating non-linear soil springs with the model incorporating linear soil springs demonstrated that each had a similar response to vehicular loading. Further to this, the predicted pile stresses and deck deflections from both bridge models agreed with values measured during the vehicular live-load bridge test.

Book excerpt: The objectives of this research program were to evaluate the state-of-art for the design of prestressed-concrete (PC), integralabutment bridges; to validate the assumptions that are incorporated in the current-design procedures for these types of bridges when they are subjected to thermal-loading conditions; and, as appropriate, to revise and improve the current-design procedures for this type of a bridge, as that design relates to the thermally-induced displacements of the abutments and the thermally-induced forces in the abutments and abutment piles. Two, skewed, PC girder, integral-abutment bridges in the State of Iowa were instrumented over a two-year period to measure structural behavior. Longitudinal and transverse displacements and rotation of the integral abutments, strains in the steel piles and in the PC girders, and temperature distributions were recorded throughout the monitoring period for both bridges. The coefficient of thermal expansion and contraction for the concrete in core specimens that were taken from 20 bridge decks and from several PC girders was experimentally measured at the 100%-dry and 100%-saturated conditions. The longitudinal displacements of the integral abutments correlated well with the recorded change in the bridge temperature. Total, longitudinal, pile strains exceeded the minimum, specified, yield strain of the steel for both bridges. Longitudinal strains in the PC girders were well within acceptable limits. The experimental data were used to calibrate and refine finite-element models of both bridges. Discrepancies were not fully explained for the differences between the predicted and measured, thermal expansion of the bridge and vertical rotations of the integral abutments.

This book was released on 2004 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) has designed and built integral abutment bridges with prestressed concrete piles for many years. A product of constructing integral bridge abutments is that the piles supporting the structure are exposed to lateral deflections, which come mainly from thermal expansion and contraction of the bridge structure. TDOT funded a project in which the University of Tennessee, Knoxville investigated the effects of the lateral displacement of four 14 inch square prestressed concrete piles that were driven into virgin clay soil. The tests involved full scale lateral loading each of the four prestressed piles; each pile supported a simulated integral bridge abutment. After each pile was driven into the ground, the model abutment and a "pulling slab" were cast on top of the pile. Leaving one foot of pile exposed between the abutment and the ground, University personnel instrumented each pile with strain gages on that exposed surface. The tests then included a basic testing regime of lateral displacements that depended on incremental displacement and time rate of loading. During the tests, moments, deflections, and shears were recorded at the pile-abutment interface. LPILE is a program that uses a finite difference analysis to calculate the behavior of a pile. While the piles in the field were not instrumented below the surface of the ground, LPILE was used to develop moment versus depth diagrams. Also the analysis evaluated shear and displacement versus depth graphs. LPILE was evaluated on its ability to predict the values measured at the pile abutment interface in the field tests and the consistency with which LPILE located maximum values and inflection points. The LPILE analyses were crude approximations of measured values.
