Prud'hon's artistic style contrasted starkly with the dominant version of Neoclassicism under Jacques-Louis David. His paintings were based on classical texts and ancient prototypes, but his dreaminess and melancholy were more akin to Romanticism. Prud'hon's drawings, often black chalk on blue paper, were not widely admired in his lifetime. Other artists during his time used these combined materials to study the figure, but Prud'hon took the form to new heights throughout his career. Although sidelined in his life, Prud'hon's insights in drawing would beckon future generations with their enigmatic testimony to sublime beauty. His technique evolved into a beautiful style that attracted many fans up to present day.

Book excerpt: Pierre-Paul Prud'hon (1758 - 1823) was a French Romantic painter and draughtsman best known for his allegorical paintings and portraits. Prud'hon's artistic style contrasted starkly with the dominant version of Neoclassicism under Jacques-Louis David. Prud'hon's paintings were based on classical texts and ancient prototypes, but his dreaminess and melancholy were more akin to Romanticism. His drawings, often black chalk on blue paper, were widely admired. Born the tenth son of a stonecutter in Burgundy, Pierre Prudon transformed both halves of his name and became Pierre-Paul Prud'hon, as if to relate himself to Peter Paul Rubens and to evoke landed gentry. He began studying painting in Dijon at age sixteen. Prud'hon arrived in Paris in 1780, but his experience in Italy from 1784 to 1787, when he absorbed the softness and sensuality of Correggio's works and Leonardo da Vinci's sfumato, gave his art its distinctive style. Upon his return to Paris, Prud'hon enthusiastically supported the French Revolution. In 1801 Napoleon favored him with commissions for portraits, ceiling decorations, and allegorical paintings. His painting of Josephine portrays her, not as an Empress but as a lovely attractive woman which led some to think that he might have been in love with her. After the divorce of Napoleon and Josephine, he was also employed by Napoleon's second wife Marie-Louise.In 1816 Prud'hon gained membership in the Institute de France. An ill-fated love affair with a pupil and collaborator who committed suicide in his studio caused Prud'hon's depression and subsequent death.

Book excerpt: Moreover, the book explores Prud'hon's prescient comprehension of a dawning art market among the newly powerful middle class while tracing the sources of his more traditional imperial patronage. In surveying the breadth of Prud'hon's graphic output, Drawing an Elusive Line includes more than 150 drawings by the artist, some little known or previously unpublished."--Jacket.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: French artist Pierre-Paul Prud'hon (1758-1823) is best known as a painter of mythological and allegorical subjects that impressed his younger contemporaries Theodore Gericault and Eugene Delacroix. Fully as deserving of attention is a series of exquisite chalk studies - known as academies - that he made throughout his career. These drawings of male and female nudes - many of which have never before been published - are the focus of this beautiful and unique book. In his text, John Elderfield first discusses Prud'hon's life and work, examining the complexities and contradictions of his career and his singular place in the art of his time, including his role in the creation of the modern female nude. Then he considers the drawings themselves. Following the text are fifty-seven of Prud'hon's finest drawings - reproduced in full color - carefully selected and arranged by Robert Gordon to unfold in a visual display of gesture and form. The book concludes with the author's notes and a selected bibliography.

Book excerpt: The Getty Museum's collection of drawings was begun in 1981 with the purchase of a Rembrandt nude and has since become an important repository of European works from the fifteenth through the nineteenth century. As in the first volume devoted to the collection (published in 1988 in English and Italian editions), the text is here organized first by national school, then alphabetically by artist, with individual works arranged chronologically. For each drawing, the authors provide a discussion of the work's style, dating, iconography, and relationship to other works, as well as provenance and a complete bibliography.

Book excerpt: First published in 1997. For this second edition of Art Books: A Basic Bibliography of Monographs on Artists, the vast number of new books published since 1985 was surveyed and evaluated. This has resulted in the selection of 3,395 additional titles. These selections, reflective of the increase in the monographic literature on artists during the last ten years, are evidence of the activities of a larger number of art historians in more countries worldwide, of the increasingly diverse and ambitious exhibition programs of museums whose number has also increased dramatically, and also of a lively international art market and the attendant gallery activities. The selections of the first edition have been reviewed, errors have been corrected and important new editions and reprints have been noted. The second edition contains 278 names of artists not represented in the first edition.

The 19th-century French and English works include landscapes, portraits, figure compositions, and still lifes by great artists of the romantic period and of the Barbizon and Realist schools, beginning with Prud'hon and ending with Seurat. Among the highlights is a group of little known works by Courbet and a series of cloud studies by Constable. Ives (curator, The Metropolitan Museum of Art) provides documentation and commentary for each work, placing it within the context of the artist's development and connecting it to contemporary artistic trends and innovations. Curator Elizabeth E. Barker contributed entries on Constable and Bonington. Annotation copyrighted by Book News Inc., Portland, OR
