Book excerpt: Travel across miles of Pennsylvania road without stop lights -- long stretches of scenic farmlands and forest. Pennsylvania's Scenic Route 6 shows you how to enjoy the ride. From the natural bird haven on Presque Isle to the Allegheny National Forest and the Pine Creek Gorge (Pennsylvania's Grand Canyon) to the Delaware River, this book portrays this route as one of the most beautiful in the United States.Readers are given insight into twenty major historic and natural sites, including the War of 1812 U.S. Brig Niagara and giant locomotives at the Steamtown National Historic Site. The author and photographer portray many of their own discoveries along the way in towns and in the countryside. The book also features photographs and descriptions of three spectacular bridges -- the Kinzua Bridge, the Tunkhannock Viaduct, and the Roebling Bridge, which once carried canal water.

Book excerpt: In the summer of 1999, a forgotten age before smartphones and the wisdom of Wikipedia, two friends trek from the Rocky Mountains to the Louisiana bayous in search of a cure for their postcollege let-down blues. Ready to fail for the sake of change, Jon Colefield signs on to a doomed mission for his company just to be near a girl he's only met once-at the New Orleans airport bar. Jon sets out for the bayou like a knight on quest, hoping the girl will be his Holy Grail. Len had just come off his latest business failure and finds himself living on Jon's couch. He's got nothing better to do than ride along with Jon until he has a stoned epiphany (a "Lenpiphany") while watching Smokey and The Bandit. Instead of loading Jon's furniture into the moving truck, he sells it, and buys 400 cases of Courz [SIC] hoping to make a quick buck down south. Jon won't find out until they've driven halfway to their destination. Len won't find out that Courz IS sold east of Texarkana until they reach Louisiana. The drive becomes an odyssey wrought with near disasters and populated with everything from the KKK to Chupacabras. When the worst is thought to be over, Len loses the trailer hauling Jon's car on the highway in Dallas. Or so he thinks... After Jon throws a left hook to Len's jaw and a tire blows on the moving truck, the two separate outside Shreveport. It will take a truckload of Creoles, the Voodoo King of New Orleans, a fishing contest, and an alligator to bring the friends back together. All that they have endured culminates in a new and final mission: saving the family marina of Jon's new love interest from foreclosure.

Book excerpt: Stretching from end to end of the thirteen original colonies, from Fort Kent, Maine, to Key West, Florida, the connecting sections of the Atlantic Coast Highway, known as United States Route No. 1, have formed a highway of history for three hundred years. Washington traveled it repeatedly in peace and war. Now the 94-mile section between New York and Philadelphia carries a heavier average traffic than any other road of equal length in the world. Route 1 connects New York, Princeton and Philadelphia, the three cities at which the capital was established in the early years of the Republic, with Washington, the final choice; and it passes near or through nearly all of the Revolutionary battlefields and many of those of the Civil War. It grew from blazed footpaths of the settlement era to its present condition, which the Bureau of Public Roads of the United States Department of Agriculture reports as surfaced for 84 percent of the distance, graded but unsurfaced for 15 percent, and unimproved for less than 1 percent. Work is proceeding on the less improved sections. The motorist traveling the road today is reminded frequently of the life and customs of the early days by the old towns and villages through which Route 1 passes; but they also cannot miss the unique places of interest—coffee shops, gift shops, restaurants, stores, museums, parks, and scenic turnouts—to be found along its whole length. A tour down Route 1 is a trip of history and nostalgia, as well as a slice across American culture, with all its quirks and eccentricities in full bloom.

Book excerpt: "Once you pick it up, you won't put it down. A new twist in every chapter. Move over James Patterson." -Sergeant Matt Zelinsky. Tuolumne County Sheriff's Department. Sonora, California. On an isolated mountain highway leading to California's Sonora Pass, Deputy Jerry Griffen meets Lauri Roberts at the site where her parents plunged to their deaths the previous year. After viewing a shoddy accident report, Jerry tries to convince Sheriff Owen Wheeler that what happened on the road that day was more sinister than a simple accident. Owen placates him citing budgetary constraints, but winks his eye at what Jerry could do unofficially. Covertly obtained information regarding Lauri, lack of witnesses, and no corroborative evidence are mere hiccups for Jerry as compared to Owen's decision to place Lynn Russell, a female detective and former love interest of Jerry's, in charge of the investigation. As senior detective, she wastes no time in driving a massive wedge between Jerry and Lauri alleging their growing relationship will cloud his judgment and feels justified in removing him from the case. To exonerate the woman he's grown to love, Jerry must devise a way to get Lynn off the case.

Book excerpt: Reflections on autism, parenting, and embracing destinations unknown. In The Scenic Route, Leigh Merryday Porch offers insight into how parents of children with autism can redefine hope in a world that often has a narrow view of what hope is supposed to look like for their kids. As an educator and expert on autism spectrum disorders as well as the mother of a son who is autistic, Porch knows well the pressure parents of special needs children feel to overcome any and all challenges their children face. But not all disabilities result in heartwarming viral stories. According to Porch, we must write our own stories about what is possible for our kids and love them just as they are. A chronicle of one family’s journey from the shock and uncertainty of a severe autism diagnosis to acceptance and advocacy, in this beautifully written book Porch shares the lessons she has learned about charting your own course. From learning to cope with sleepless, worry-filled nights to asking friends and family for the help and support you actually need, she offers readers a road map for helping our children thrive while still taking the time to stop and enjoy the beauty in life’s unforeseen detours.

Book excerpt: Take a delightful detour with this novel by the author of The Wedding Beat and a writer of The New York Times’s “Vows” column… The shortest distance between soul mates isn’t always a straight line.... When Austin Gittleman first met Naomi Bloom, they were grammar school classmates and she pasted pictures of him in her Barbie Dreamhouse. Those days are long gone. Austin is a Midwestern doctor who always tries to do the right thing—even if it often turns out wrong. Naomi is a Miami pastry chef with a taste for adventure. They seem to have nothing in common. But that doesn’t stop Austin from falling head over heels when they reconnect at a mutual friend’s seaside wedding. Only, falling hard doesn’t guarantee happily ever after, or even a second date. Tropical storms and mechanical malfunctions contribute to a series of miscommunications and missed connections that lead Austin and Naomi away from each other and back again. In The Scenic Route, life is what happens on the way to where you’re going. It’s unpredictable and inconvenient, but it can be pretty wonderful when you bring the right person along for the ride.
