Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The City of the Seven Hills: A Book of Stories From the History of Ancient Rome In this volume, the attempt has been made to give a picture of the life and history of the Roman peo ple. So far as it has been feasible, this has been done by means of biographical sketches, selected so as to be illustrative of the Roman character, its virtues and its faults. In this way, it has also been possible to weave into the narrative a more vivid description of the daily life and customs of the men, women and children of Rome, than would have been the case under any other method of treatment. In the last chapter, an attempt is made to relate the old Rome to modern life through a description of some existing remains, and to point out in a few words the way in which the ancient city was merged in the Rome of to-day. In a work designed for young children, as is this one, it seems desirable that the brutal element of Roman character and history should be eliminated so far as is possible; and to this end, much has been omitted from the narrative which might properly find a place in a history of Rome for High School use. Book excerpt: Pictures of Old Rome by Frances Minto Dickinson Elliot is an enchanting account of Roman history in all its glory. Elliot opens a window into the world of Rome in its ancient days through a descriptive narrative that is sure to make the reader feel the sights and sounds he painstakingly constructs throughout the course of this book. Spread across thirteen chapters, Pictures of Old Rome starts with an account of the Piazza Del Popolo in all its grandeur. The author sets the tone for the rest of the text with an imaginative recollection of events as they would have been in ancient times, with references to the Emperor's parades and victory marches through the Piazza. He then moves on to describe various other points of attraction in the city including the mausoleum of Augustus, the catacombs, San Gregorio and many more. It is, however, Elliot's description of Rome's socio-economic dichotomy that keeps the reader enthralled. While a majority of the work praises and applauds the magnificent architecture and cultural revolution of Rome, it is in the chapter on Rome's Interiors that the reader will fully understand the stark differences between the rich and the poor and the urban rural divide that existed in old Rome. Elliot adopts sanguine language and liberal use of superlatives in this gripping recount of Rome in the days of the empire. Pictures of Old Rome is a must read for all those who are keen to learn more about this historical place whilst also being a treasure trove of information for travel enthusiasts and history buffs alike. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pictures From Greek Life and Story His first step was to assure himself of divine favour. He consulted the oracle of Delphi, and was told that he must propitiate the heroes of the island. This he did by landing at night, and performing the customary sacrifices in secrecy. The attack which followed was, as may be seen, skilfully contrived, though it may be doubtful whether the story of Solon's stratagem is authentic. Accordingto this, he dressed up a number of Athenians as women, provid ing them at the same time with arms, which they concealed under their feminine apparel. This done, he sent a messenger, in the guise of a deserter, to the Megarian garrison in Salamis, with information that they might find a number of Athenian women celebrating a festival on the Shore at a time and place specified. The garrison fell into the trap, and suffered so disastrous a loss that the island was left without defence. According to another account he had recourse to a more ordinary kind of Strategy. The result was that Athens acquired possession of the island, though, as Megara was not disposed to accept its defeat, not till after an arbitration which Sparta decided in favour of the Athenians. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stories in Stone From the Roman Forum Why, why the Forum of Rome became the centre of the nation's life, why the Romans wore white togas, why the public Treasury was under Saturn's charge, why the basilicas were built, why the donkeys were decked with cakes during Vesta's festival, why the temples stood on high foundations, why the magnificent monuments crumbled into ruins, and many other whys that travellers wish to know, that historical readers seek, that young students enjoy. The stories are but retold, the facts restated, but no legend is narrated, no statement made, that is unvouched for by a recognized authority. It may be added that the illustrations have been inserted more as aids to the imagination than as material for scientific study. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stories From the History of Rome The writer of this little book was not satisfied that her children should hear nothing but fairy tales and the stories of nursery life, now so popular. But she could find nothing else fit to read to them. There are, indeed, plenty of story-books drawing their materials from history, and professing to be intended for children. But they are not suited to very young children. They abound in words and ideas which a child of four or six years old not only does not understand, but cannot be made to understand. The writer, however, believed that it was quite possible to put portions of Livy and Plutarch into language which should need little or no explanation even to children of that age. She accordingly made the experiment. One story after another was written and read to her little boys. Whenever she discovered that a word or idea was unintelligible to them, she took pains to simplify it. She found that they thoroughly enjoyed these old tales from Roman history, and liked to hear them repeated again and again. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Private Life of the Romans On the other hand it is equally true that a knowledges of political history is necessary for the study of Private Antiquities. We shall find the Romans giving up certain ways of living and habits of thinking that seemed to have become fixed and characteristic. These changes we could not explain at all, if political history did not inform us that just before they took place the Romans had come into contact with the widely different ideas and opposing civilizations of other nations. The most important event of this sort was the introduction of Greek culture after the Punic wars, and to this we shall have to refer again and again. It follows from all this that students who have had even the most elementary course in Roman history have already some knowledge of Private Antiquities, and that those who have not studied the history of Rome at all will find very helpful the reading of even the briefest of our school histories. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of the Roman People an Elementary History of Rome There is little that is of more practical value to the young folk of to-day than the history of Rome. How a village king dom became a mighty republic, how the republic became a world-embracing empire, how that empire, the dread and pride of its millions of subjects, fell so low as to become the sport Of its own soldiers all this is, indeed, a tale of mar vel. But the history of Rome is more than a mere story. Many of the difficulties and many of the advantages Of the Roman Republic are akin to those of the American Repub lic. The solution of such problems as have already presented themselves in the United States is even now demanding the highest Wisdom Of the land. Other problems will arise in the near future. Roman history is a mighty object lesson, of value. To every citizen of our Republic, of especial value to the children into Whose hands the government will so speed ily pass. What is learned in years of maturity is an addi tion to one's mental equipment; what is learned in child hood becomes a part of the mind itself. That those Who read this book may find it of interest to-day, of service to morrow, is the Wish Of the author. Eva march tappan. March 1, 1910.
