This period coincided with the golden age of postcards (roughly 1898-1920), when millions upon millions of these penny souvenirs were mailed near and far all over the globe. Thankfully, many were stuffed into cigar and shoe boxes for later generations to rediscover, collect, and share. Selected from the collections of longtime Marion residents and summer visitors, A Picture Postcard History of Marion, Massachusetts is a capsule portrait of a New England coastal town that, despite dramatic changes all around, has managed to preserve its charms.

Book Synopsis Picturing Illinois by : John A. Jakle
Download or read book Picturing Illinois written by John A. Jakle and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2012-09-15 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The American picture postcard debuted around the start of the twentieth century, creating an enthusiasm for sending and collecting postcard art that continued for decades. As a form of popular culture, scenic postcards strongly influenced how Americans conceptualized both faraway and nearby places through portrayals of landscapes, buildings, and historic sites. In this gloriously illustrated history of the picture postcard in Illinois, John A. Jakle and Keith A. Sculle study a rich and diverse set of images that chronicle what Illinoisans considered attractive, intriguing, and memorable. They also discuss how messages written on postcards reveal the sender's personal interpretation of local geography and scenery. The most popularly depicted destination was Chicago, America's great boomtown. Its portraits are especially varied, showing off its high-rise architecture, its teeming avenues, and the vitality of its marketplaces and even slaughterhouses. Postcards featuring downstate locales, however, elaborated and reinforced stereotypes that divided the state, portraying the rest of Illinois as the counterpoint to Chicago's urban bustle. Scores of cards from Springfield, Peoria, Bloomington-Normal, Urbana-Champaign, Quincy, and Vandalia emphasize wide-open prairies, modest civic edifices, and folksy charm. The sense of dichotomy between Chicago and the rest of Illinois was, of course, a substantial fallacy, since the city's very prosperity depended upon the entire state's fertile farmlands, natural resources, and small industries. Jakle and Sculle follow this dialogue between urban Chicago and rural downstate as it is illustrated on two hundred vintage postcards, observing both their common conventions and their variety. They also discuss the advances in printing technology in the early 1900s that made mass appeal possible. Providing rich historical and geographical context, Picturing Illinois: Twentieth-Century Postcard Art from Chicago to Cairo illustrates the picture postcard's significance in American popular culture and the unique ways in which Illinoisans pictured their world.

Book Synopsis Provenance and Early Cinema by : Joanne Bernardi
Download or read book Provenance and Early Cinema written by Joanne Bernardi and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2021-02-01 with total page 561 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Remnants of early films often have a story to tell. As material artifacts, these film fragments are central to cinema history, perhaps more than ever in our digital age of easy copying and sharing. If a digital copy is previewed before preservation or is shared with a researcher outside the purview of a film archive, knowledge about how the artifact was collected, circulated, and repurposed threatens to become obscured. When the question of origin is overlooked, the story can be lost. Concerned contributors in Provenance and Early Cinema challenge scholars digging through film archives to ask, "How did these moving images get here for me to see them?" This volume, which features the conference proceedings from Domitor, the International Society for the Study of Early Cinema, 2018, questions preservation, attribution, and patterns of reuse in order to explore singular artifacts with long and circuitous lives.
Download or read book Warwick written by Donald A. D'Amato and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2001 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although known as the retail capital of Rhode Island, Warwick is much more than a conglomeration of shopping centers, malls, and industrial parks; it is a city marked by an extraordinary history and in many ways, serves as a mirror of the American experience. Like many communities across the United States, Warwick developed from a rural hamlet into a town distinguished by a variety of industries in the nineteenth century, attracting immigrants from across the globe desiring a new beginning within its mill villages. These industries brought wealth and opportunity, and paved the way for Warwick's transformation from small town to cosmopolitan center. Warwick: A City at the Crossroads is not a stale chronology, but is a work that breathes new life into the memorable characters and events that shaped the community's history over the past four centuries. Taking readers on an exciting journey through Warwick's past, this unique illustrated history begins with the first Narragansett Indian tribes that hunted amidst the virgin wilderness and details an evolving landscape touched by colonial settlement, wars, storms, depressions, resort development, and industrialization up through the present day. However, the true measure of a community is in its people, and Warwick possesses a remarkable cast of colorful characters, such as controversial city father, Samuel Gorton, Revolutionary War heroes Nathanael Greene and James Varnum, textile magnate Robert Knight, and scores of other distinct personalities, ranging from privateers and bootleggers to feared political bosses and industrial giants.
Download or read book Bisbee written by Annie Graeme Larkin and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2013 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Visually, the Bisbee of today remains a community frozen in time, with Main Street retaining its character from 1910. The discovery of copper deposits in the Mule Mountains brought forth a wealth that enabled a substantial community. Profitable mining ventures and a need for labor drew thousands of miners from around the world to work in Bisbee. These individuals added a distinct flavor to the area. Like countless other Western mining camps, Bisbee evolved from a rough frontier community surviving disastrous fires and floods into a town with a substantial population and solid foundation. Bisbee's seemingly inexhaustible mineral wealth resulted in the community becoming a center of economic and political power in an emerging territory on its way to statehood. It was Arizona's greatest copper camp.

Download or read book Danvers written by Richard B. Trask and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2002-08-01 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From their introduction in the late nineteenth century, picture postcards have been a souvenir staple in every American community. These practical, yet collectable mailers promote local businesses and tourism, and celebrate historic and scenic localities. Danvers, known as Salem Village during the infamous 1692 witch-hunt, became an independent town in the 1750s. By the twentieth century, local boosters spotlighted the town's rich architectural heritage, local institutions, and vibrant business district by producing a variety of postcard views. Ancient saltbox houses associated with the witchcraft days, eighteenth-century gambrel-roofed dwellings that sheltered Revolutionary War patriots, the mansion occupied by famed poet John Greenleaf Whittier, and the Danvers Insane Asylum, a majestic state-operated facility, were frequent postcard subjects. This book samples the best of Danvers's twentieth-century postcard heritage.

Download or read book Book of Sketches written by Jack Kerouac and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2006-04-04 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1952 and 1953 as he wandered around America, Jack Kerouac jotted down spontaneous prose poems, or "sketches" as he called them, on small notebooks that he kept in his shirt pockets. The poems recount his travels—New York, North Carolina, Lowell (Massachusetts, Kerouac’s birthplace), San Francisco, Denver, Kansas, Mexico—observations, and meditations on art and life. The poems are often strung together so that over the course of several of them, a little story—or travelogue—appears, complete in itself. Published for the first time, Book of Sketches offers a luminous, intimate, and transcendental glimpse of one of the most original voices of the twentieth century at a key time in his literary and spiritual development.
