Book excerpt: "In the spring of 2010, the Government of Canada invited PICES to participate in a Commission of Inquiry into the Decline of Sockeye Salmon in the Fraser River by considering how marine ecology may have affected their abundance. A major objective that was achieved in this report was to assemble, within an eight week period, as comprehensive a summary as was possible of what is known about Fraser River sockeye salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka) in the ocean. While much of this effort involved summarizing information published in data/technical reports and the primary literature, where necessary, original data have been re-examined and new analyses conducted to fulfill the terms of the Statement of Work. The compilation provides a background of knowledge against which to judge what can be known regarding the two major questions posed by the Cohen Commission to PICES: Can the decline in Fraser River sockeye in 2009 be explained by the conditions the fish experienced in the marine environment? Is there any evidence for declines in marine productivity or changes in Fraser River sockeye distribution that can be associated with the 15-year gradual decrease in Fraser River sockeye productivity? ..."--Executive summary.

Book excerpt: The Behavior and Ecology of Pacific Salmon and Trout combines in-depth scientific information with outstanding photographs and original artwork to fully describe the fish species critical to the Pacific Rim. This completely revised and updated edition covers all aspects of the life cycle of these remarkable fish in the Pacific: homing migration from the open ocean through coastal waters and up rivers to their breeding grounds; courtship and reproduction; the lives of juvenile salmon and trout in rivers and lakes; migration to the sea; the structure of fish populations; and the importance of fish carcasses to the ecosystem. The book also includes information on salmon and trout transplanted outside their ranges. Fisheries expert Thomas P. Quinn writes with clarity and enthusiasm to interest a wide range of readers, including biologists, anglers, and naturalists. He provides the most current science available as well as perspectives on the past, present, and future of Pacific salmon and trout. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the work of the North Pacific Marine Science Organization (PICES) since its launch 1992. Mapping the evolution of its agenda gives insight into the development of modern marine science in the context of competing demands of stakeholders within and outside the organization. The opening chapter consider the challenges of marine science as a large scale, and places PICES in the contexts of internationalism and science-based resource management. They also lay out the organization’s longstanding focus on the development of climate science and its applications. Subsequent chapters explore the pros and cons of national vs. international science, negotiating the nature of investigation and cooperation across scientific, political and institutional boundaries in the region; national perspectives on purpose, scope, and mandates; assessing two major initiatives undertaken to date; the challenges of incorporating social science into an organization of mainly natural scientists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Fraser River Sockeye Public Review Board conducted an independent investigation of the apparent disappearance of several million sockeye salmon which would normally have migrated to spawning areas in the Fraser River watershed in 1994. The Board review had three main objectives: to identify the reasons for the discrepancies in the expected and actual number of sockeye salmon arriving on the spawning ground; to evaluate the accuracy of the Pacific Salmon Commission's methodology for estimating run sizes and sockeye escapement in the Fraser River; and to make recommendations on how any deficiencies can be corrected. This report presents the findings and recommendations of the Board and includes an examination of the role of environmental factors, a review of the institutions involved and the fishery management techniques employed, and an evaluation of the federal Aboriginal Fisheries Strategy.

Book excerpt: Trophic cascades—the top-down regulation of ecosystems by predators—are an essential aspect of ecosystem function and well-being. Trophic cascades are often drastically disrupted by human interventions—for example, when wolves and cougars are removed, allowing deer and beaver to become destructive—yet have only recently begun to be considered in the development of conservation and management strategies. Trophic Cascades is the first comprehensive presentation of the science on this subject. It brings together some of the world’s leading scientists and researchers to explain the importance of large animals in regulating ecosystems, and to relate that scientific knowledge to practical conservation. Chapters examine trophic cascades across the world’s major biomes, including intertidal habitats, coastal oceans, lakes, nearshore ecosystems, open oceans, tropical forests, boreal and temperate ecosystems, low arctic scrubland, savannas, and islands. Additional chapters consider aboveground/belowground linkages, predation and ecosystem processes, consumer control by megafauna and fire, and alternative states in ecosystems. An introductory chapter offers a concise overview of trophic cascades, while concluding chapters consider theoretical perspectives and comparative issues. Trophic Cascades provides a scientific basis and justification for the idea that large predators and top-down forcing must be considered in conservation strategies, alongside factors such as habitat preservation and invasive species. It is a groundbreaking work for scientists and managers involved with biodiversity conservation and protection.
