Sur le plan industriel, l'étude des plasmas concourt à la mise au point de nouvelles techniques de production d'électricité (fusion thermonucléaire contrôlée) et de la matière (soudure, découpe, projection). Les gaz faiblement ionisés, auxquels est consacré cet ouvrage, sont mis en œuvre dans la réalisation de matériaux nouveaux, le traitement des surfaces, la dépollution, la génération d'ozone... Ce cours présente les mécanismes fondamentaux qui régissent les gaz ionisés, en synthétisant leurs divers aspects - statistique, quantique, cinétique, rayonnement... L'analyse microscopique du plasma conduit à la classification de ses processus élémentaires. Elle met en évidence les mécanismes individuels qui rendent compte de son comportement macroscopique. La transition du microscopique au macroscopique est assurée par la description des phénomènes de transport. Ces éléments théoriques permettent de comprendre les applications expérimentales et industrielles, en particulier des plasmas cinétiques classiques. Les étudiants de fin de 2e cycle et 3e cycle aborderont dans cet ouvrage la physique des plasmas d'un point de vue à la fois fondamental et appliqué. Les chercheurs et les ingénieurs en physique atomique et en sciences des matériaux y trouveront des rappels utiles à leurs recherches.

The cause of this rich polymorphism is analyzed in the first part of this book (chapters 1-5) with the propensity of carbon atoms for forming different types of homopolar chemical bonds associated with variable coordination numbers. Precursor organic molecules and parent compounds are also described to establish specific links with this rich polymorphism. Then in a second part (chapters 6-10) a comparative review of the main classes of bulk physical properties is presented. This approach emphasizes in particular the electronic behavior of (pi) polyaromatic systems organized in plane and curved atomic sheets. Finally in a third part (chapters 11-15) the surface and interface characteristics are introduced together with the texture and morphology of these multiscale carbon materials. An overview of the main field of applications is related showing the large use and interest for these solids.
