Having treated thousands of clients over more than a decade and supervised hundreds of trained physiotherapists in one of Australia's leading health care groups, few people are better positioned to give advice on physical health and wellness than International Author and Speaker Jason Smith. Written in plain English, this unique book will change your life by combining timeproven and medically sound principles with an innovative philosophy of selfempowerment. You will Discover: * The secret to wellness is a lot more than being "uninjured" or pain-free * Crucial health advice that doctors and therapists rarely have time to share with you * The importance of physical movement to living longer and enjoying life * Innovative strategies to reduce pain immediately and make a fast recovery * How to assess which treatment options are best for you * Proven approaches to achieving lasting results from each physiotherapy session, and not 'lose the benefits' over time * How to save time and money by not becoming dependent on your practitioner The Back In Motion Story - A Simple Philosophy Back in Motion Health Group first emerged as a concept or desire to operate a first class physiotherapy practice which offered clients' holistic solutions, sustainable outcomes, genuine and ongoing after-care , and was altogether encapsulated in relating to people with prestige and dignity. The more traditional physiotherapy practice models observed at the time certainly did not reflect these found values or philosophies of care. Back in Motion Health Group commenced as a small practice in the home of founders, Jason and Paulina Smith, in September 1999. Their early success resulted in quick growth and by April 2000 had moved the practice from their home into more suitable commercial medical facilities. An expert and committed team soon gathered around Jason and Paulina as they focused on emerging as one of the choice physiotherapy providers and employers in our industry.

Book excerpt: The Social Security Administration (SSA) administers two programs that provide disability benefits: the Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) program and the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program. SSDI provides disability benefits to people (under the full retirement age) who are no longer able to work because of a disabling medical condition. SSI provides income assistance for disabled, blind, and aged people who have limited income and resources regardless of their prior participation in the labor force. Both programs share a common disability determination process administered by SSA and state agencies as well as a common definition of disability for adults: "the inability to engage in any substantial gainful activity by reason of any medically determinable physical or mental impairment which can be expected to result in death or which has lasted or can be expected to last for a continuous period of not less than 12 months." Disabled workers might receive either SSDI benefits or SSI payments, or both, depending on their recent work history and current income and assets. Disabled workers might also receive benefits from other public programs such as workers' compensation, which insures against work-related illness or injuries occurring on the job, but those other programs have their own definitions and eligibility criteria. Selected Health Conditions and Likelihood of Improvement with Treatment identifies and defines the professionally accepted, standard measurements of outcomes improvement for medical conditions. This report also identifies specific, long-lasting medical conditions for adults in the categories of mental health disorders, cancers, and musculoskeletal disorders. Specifically, these conditions are disabling for a length of time, but typically don't result in permanently disabling limitations; are responsive to treatment; and after a specific length of time of treatment, improve to the point at which the conditions are no longer disabling.

Book excerpt: Interest in the assessment and management of children's pain has increased dramatically over the past few years. Recent advances in the understanding of the plasticity and complexity of pain processing and new information about internal pain-inhibitory systems have revolutionized traditional approaches to pain control. It is now known that children's pain is plastic--not simply and directly related to the nature and extent of tissue damage--and that there are many ways to alleviate their suffering. Using a multifaceted approach that encompasses the neural and psychological factors that mediate pain, and featuring specific examples drawn from the Pain Clinic at The Children's Hospital of Western Ontario, this uniquely practical volume presents the most up-to-date information on how to assess and control acute, recurrent, and chronic pain in children. In recognition of the multidimensional nature of children's pain experiences, the book opens with a discussion of what pain is to children, the types of pain they experience, and the developmental, familial, situational, and emotional factors that modify children's perceptions and behaviors. Physiological, behavioral and psychological pain measures and direct measures for evaluating pain in infants and children are described and evaluated. The complexity of the nociceptive system, which enables practitioners to alter children's pain perceptions, is covered in detail, and information is provided about how to teach children and parents about pain modulation. In the chapters that cover treatment, the primary pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions for reducing pain are reviewed along with practical suggestions on how to select and use cognitive-behavioral techniques in ambulatory clinics and hospital settings. Separate chapters offer separate, in-depth discussions on the management of acute pain, recurrent pain syndromes (such as headaches, abdominal and limb pains), and chronic pain. Drawn from the author's experience as director of a multidisciplinary pain clinic for children, this straightforward volume, with its numerous case illustrations and research results, will be an invaluable resource to a all health professionals, particularly those in psychology, behavioral medicine, nursing and pediatrics. It also serves as an excellent text for students in these disciplines.

As well as describing every aspect of the pathologically curved, deformed spine, this textbook incorporates an extensive programme of exercises that can be tailored specifically to the needs of the individual patient. As outlined in Three-Dimensional Scoliosis Therapy: The Schroth Breathing Orthopaedic System, correction of the spinal deformity is based on a special breathing technique and active muscle stretching, as well as on elongation, detorsion and reduction of lordosis. The provision of psychological support for the patient is also emphasised as a key element. Christa Lehnert-Schroth born 1924 in Meissen She worked as a physiotherapist for about 50 years with scoliosis patients and further developed her mother's breathing orthopaedic technique with great success. Between 1961 and 1995 Christa Lehnert-Schroth - always surrounded by physicians - was director of the private Katharina-Schroth-Klinik in Bad Sobernheim/Germany. In many lectures, articles, seminars and films for physiotherapists and medical doctors in addition to recorded discs for patient's training at home she illustrated her mother's special method for scoliosis assuring well being of many patients and in honor her mother's legacy.

It plays a vital role in the rehabilitation of the physically handicapped. There are a large number of books on orthopaedics and physiotherapy, but they all deal with these subjects as a separate entity. There is not even a single book that provides the overall picture of the total therapeutic management. This book, the first of its kind, fills the gap. About the Author : - Vijaya D.
