Book excerpt: Excerpt from Animal Physiology The want of a good Elementary Treatise on Animal Physiology, has been very greatly felt by those, who have desired to gain a general acquaintance with the Science, or who are entering upon the professional study of it. Indeed, the Author is inclined to believe, that one cause of the almost complete exclusion of the subject from the Educational system of this country, may be traced to that deficiency. In France it has long been otherwise. A competent knowledge of Animal Physiology and Zoology is there required from every Candidate for University honours; and men of the highest scientific reputation do not think it beneath them, to write elementary books, for the instruction of the beginner. The general plan of this volume, is the same with that of the Treatise on Physiology, contributed by M. Milne-Edwards, one of the most eminent Naturalists in France, to the "Elementary Course of Natural History," adopted by the French Government as the d104-Book of instruction, in the Colleges connected with the University of Paris. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Text-Book of Human Physiology An animal organism in the living condition exhibits a series of phenomena which relate to growth, movement, mentality, and re production. During the period preceding birth, as well as during the period included between birth and adult life, the individual grows in size and complexity from the introduction and assimilation of material from without. Throughout its life the animal exhibits a series of movements, in virtue of which it not only changes the relation Of one part of its body to another, but also changes its posi tion relatively to its environment. If, in the execution of these movements, the parts are directed to the overcoming of opposing forces, such as gravity, friction, cohesion, elasticity, etc., the animal may be said to be doing work. The result of normal growth is the attainment of a physical development that will enable the animal, and, more especially, man, to perform the work necessitated by the nature of its environment and the character of its organization. In man, and probably in lower animals as well, mentality manifests itself as intellect, feeling, and volition. At a definite period in the life of the animal it reproduces itself, in consequence of which the species to which it belongs is perpetuated. The study of the phenomena of growth, movement, mentality, and reproduction constitutes the science of animal physiology. But as these general activities are the resultant of and dependent on the special activities of the individual structures of which an animal body 'is composed, physiology in its more restricted and generally accepted sense is the science which investigates the actions or functions of the individual organs and tissues of the body and the physical and chemic conditions which underlie and determine them. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Respiratory Exchange of Animals and Man The subject of Physiological Chemistry, or Biochemistry, is enlarging its borders to such an extent at the present time, that no single text-book upon the subject, without being cumbrous, can adequately deal with it as a whole, so as to give both a general and a detailed account of its present position. It is, moreover, difficult, in the case of the larger text-books, to keep abreast of so rapidly growing a science by means of new editions, and such volumes are therefore issued when much of their contents has become obsolete. For this reason, an attempt is being made to place this branch of science in a more accessible position by issuing a series of monographs upon the various chapters of the subject, each independent of and yet dependent upon the others, so that from time to time, as new material and the demand therefor necessitate, a new edition of each mono graph can be issued without reissuing the whole series. In this way, both the expenses of publication and the expense to the purchaser will be diminished, and by a moderate outlay it will be possible to Obtain a full account of any particular subject as nearly current as possible. The editors of these monographs have kept two objects in View: firstly, that each author should be himself working at the subject with which he deals; and, secondly, that a as complete as possible, should be included, in order to avoid cross references, which are apt to be wrongly cited, and in order that each monograph may yield full and independent information of the work which has been done upon the subject. It has been decided as a general scheme that the volumes first issued shall deal with the pure chemistry of physiological products and with certain general aspects of the subject. Subsequent monographs will be devoted to such questions as the chemistry of special tissues and particular aspects of metabolism. So the series, if continued, will proceed from physiological chemistry to what may be now more properly termed chemical physiology. This will depend upon the success which the first series achieves, and upon the divisions of the subject which may be of interest at the time. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Human Physiology, Vol. 4 of 5 Movement and Sensation are the two extremes of the processes of animal life by which the organism is brought into direct relation with the outer world. Movements are always objective in character and can be studied directly by external observation. Sensations are invariably subjective, and can only be directly analysed by introspection, and indirectly inferred from the expressional movements which are their external concomitants. It follows that the physiology of sensation in man is the necessary starting point for the comparative physiology of sensation in animals; and the intimate observation of our own consciousness is the only available basis for judging the psychical activities of animals or of other men. All organs of the body that are supplied with afferent nerves continually send information of their functional state to the central nervous system, and exert a reflex controlling influence along the efferent nerves without passing the threshold of consciousness. At other times they send to the centres messages which are not entirely subconscious, but emerge vaguely and indefinitely in consciousness as a more or less decided sense of well-being or the reverse. Or again, the messages from the different organs to the centres may definitely cross the threshold of consciousness and give rise to distinct sensations which differ in quality and intensity. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Comparative Physiology and Psychology: A Discussion of the Evolution and Relations of the Mind and Body of Man and Animals Heretofore the mental workings have been discussed chiefly by a class called metaphysicians, many of whom were astute observers; but in the main their system was so insufficient, SO one sided, and their deductions Often so absurd as to discourage honest investigators and cause such a thing as a science of the human mind to be looked upon as chimerical, and even though possible to achieve, as of doubtful use. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essentials of Veterinary Physiology Between the Physiology of Man and that of the Domestic Animals there is no fundamental difference, and most of our knowledge of human physiology has been acquired from experiments upon the lower animals. But while the tissues of a man, a dog, and a horse act much in the same manner, the mode of nutrition of these tissues is somewhat different, and requires special attention in the case of each. In this volume the attempt is made to give the essentials of general physiology and of the special physiology of the domestic animals in a form suitable to the requirements of Students and Practitioners of Veterinary Medicine. The book is not intended to take the place of the demonstrations and practical work from which alone physiology can be properly learned, but merely to supplement these and to focus the information derived from them. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Physiology of Farm Animals, Vol. 1 Many of the functions of the body are essentially similar throughout the whole animal kingdom, and among Vertebrates there is a still closer likeness. Thus the processes of digestion in a frog, a bird, a rabbit, a horse, and a man are broadly speak ing Similar, though there are of course very marked differences which are generally greater the less closely related the animals are. So also the general laws governing the nature of nerve impulses, the movements of the heart, or the processes of repro duction are identical in every case. Thus by investigating any of these processes in a frog or in a rabbit, for example, we can learn a great deal about the functional activities of a horse, or a sheep, or a cow; and it is desirable that before specialising upon the Physiology of farm animals we should possess a general knowledge of the principles of the science obtained by studying whatever animals are most convenient for this purpose. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Animal Physiology, Chiefly Human Animal Physiology is "essentially a Science of Designs and Final Causes." Probably no subject, if taught with even moderate intelligence, can be rendered so interesting, or made to rouse the dormant energies of the intellect of young people, and of those previously untrained in the method of scientific inquiry, as that of Human Physiology. Certainly the study of no other science opens up to the mind so many wonders, solves so many human mysteries, or brings home to the mind so many proofs of the "reign of Law," and of the wise and beneficent design of this universe, or teaches so many principles which lie at the basis of human health, morals, and well-being, as that of Human Physiology. On these considerations alone, - and many other most powerful ones might be urged, - "Human Physiology" must claim a leading position in any system which professes to educate the people soundly. Very considerable experience as a Teacher of Physiology, with the youthful and adult of both sexes, has proved to the writer the facility with which the viva voce teaching of Elementary Physiology may be made "perfectly sound and thorough," when supplemented with the aid of good diagrams, a good text-book, and the free use of the black-board, and of the lungs, heart, kidney, eye, &c., of the sheep, and of such other objects as may be readily obtained from the butcher, for the illustration of the general structure of the corresponding organs of the human body; while the body of the living frog or tadpole is amply sufficient to illustrate the general phenomena of the circulation and the properties of the living tissues. The teacher should also occasionally dissect a small animal, as a rabbit, recently killed with chloroform, before his class. A Human Skeleton and a cheap Microscope will likewise be found invaluable aids to the earnest teacher. A general impression prevails, among the candidates presenting themselves at the Government Science Examinations, that it is easier to pass with the same actual knowledge in the Second Class, Advanced Stage, than in the First Class, Elementary Stage.
