Book excerpt: Naval Air Warfare Center evaluated the physiological and subjective responses of 28 aircrew wearing the A/P22P-9(V) USMC Helicopter Aircrewman Chemical, Biological (CB) Protection Ensemble during warm/hot weather ground and flight testing in four USMC helicopter types. Ground testing evaluated fit, donning and doffing, flight equipment compatibility, mobility, dexterity, ingress, egress, emergency egress, water survivability, crewstation compatibility, and repeated preflight inspections in CH-53, CH-46, UH-1N, and AH-1 helicopters. CH-53 and UH-1N flight testing compared three clothing configurations (the A/P22P-9(V), A/P22P-9(V) above-the-neck respirator assembly only, and standard flight clothing) and two test conditions (4-hr flight profile without D/T and preflight inspections). During three summers of A/P22P-9(V) testing (1988-1990), aircrew completed 44 test trials and 142 hr wear time. Ambient temperatures ranged from 22 deg (72 deg F) in the ready room to 40 deg C (104 deg F) in flight. (Author).

Book excerpt: The A/P22P-9(V) Chemical, Biological, Radiological (CBR) Protective Assembly for helicopter aircrews has been evaluated for the additional thermal stress it imparts to users in a hot environment. The standard aircrew life support system for helicopters, based on the CWU-27/P flight coverall, was employed as the experimental control. Two environmental conditions were studied: 1) a simulated hot aircraft interior (hot), with chamber temperatures maintained at dry bulb temperatures = 32.8C and a wet bulb temperature = 25.0C; and 2) a control environment (cool), with chamber temperatures maintained at 20.9C. Three males, aged 24-35 years, were exposed twice to each garment/environment condition combination, for a total of eight exposures each, except for one subject who was studied in cool conditions only once in each of the configurations, for a total of six runs. Book excerpt: The psychological, physiological, and operational effects of sustained aviation operations in the standard US Army chemical defense ensemble were studied in six male aviators during continuous 6-day sessions in a hot, humid field environment. Standard aviation mission durations and profiles were flown in a specially-equipped JUH-1H helicopter while wearing level IV mission-oriented protective posture (MOPP IV) garments. A single case design was used to investigate the effects of microclimate cooling devices of both air and liquid medium design. Results show that cooling is not physiologically necessary below cockpit temperatures of 29 C WBGT although subjective benefit was reported. Above 29 C WBGT cockpit temperature with closed aircraft windows and doors, microclimate cooling was necessary to avoid adverse effects of body core temperature increases. Book excerpt: The psychological (as opposed to physiological) effects of wearing a US aircrew chemical defense ensemble were evaluated using 12 male and 12 female volunteers. Half of the males and half of the females wore chemical defense ensembles while the rest wore standard US flight suits as controls. All subjects were administered tests of cognition (math, logical reasoning, target detection, and reaction time) before and after 6 hours of wear in a controlled environment. In addition, subjects rated their mood before and after wear. It was concluded that wearing the ensemble in an undemanding environment degraded affect (mood and activation levels), slightly decreased accuracy, and substantially decreased reaction times, especially in females. The most serious impact of the ensemble would seem to be a decrease in morale among females.

We evaluated heat strain in volunteers during exercise-heat stress experiments conducted while they wore the JPACE and the currently fielded USAF CWU-66/P coveralls (66/P) with accepted aviation life support equipment (ALSE) and armored vehicle Mission Oriented Protective Posture level 4 (MOPP 4) uniform configurations for a total of 10 garment tests. Data from these tests are used in the evaluation process of the JPACE program.
