In response to this serious agricultural challenge, many in the scientific community are spending their time and energy in finding ways to improving the crop yield grown in drought environment by looking at roots. Studying roots is of critical because roots function in water and nutrient acquisition for the plant.

On the other, it provides an effective insulation against speculation and unforeseen spikes in commodity prices, since the potato does not represent a good traded on global markets.
