Book Synopsis Physicochemical and Environmental Plant Physiology by : Park S. Nobel
Download or read book Physicochemical and Environmental Plant Physiology written by Park S. Nobel and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2005-01-24 with total page 589 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Physiology," which is the study of the function of cells, organs, and organisms, derives from the Latin physiologia, which in turn comes from the Greek physi- or physio-, a prefix meaning natural, and logos, meaning reason or thought. Thus physiology suggests natural science and is now a branch of biology dealing with processes and activities that are characteristic of living things. "Physicochemical" relates to physical and chemical properties, and "Environmental" refers to topics such as solar irradiation and wind. "Plant" indicates the main focus of this book, but the approach, equations developed, and appendices apply equalIy welI to animaIs and other organisms. We wilI specificalIy consider water relations, solute transport, photosynthesis, transpiration, respiration, and environmental interactions. A physiologist endeavors to understand such topics in physical and chemical terms; accurate models can then be constructed and responses to the internal and the external environment can be predicted. Elementary chemistry, physics, and mathematics are used to develop concepts that are key to under-standing biology -the intent is to provide a rigorous development, not a compendium of facts. References provide further details, although in some cases the enunciated principIes carry the reader to the forefront of current research. Calculations are used to indicate the physiological consequences of the various equations, and problems at the end of chapters provide further such exercises. Solutions to alI of the problems are provided, and the appendixes have a large tist of values for constants and conversion factors at various temperatures.

Book Synopsis Comparative Electro-Physiology by : Jagadis Chunder Bose
Download or read book Comparative Electro-Physiology written by Jagadis Chunder Bose and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 812 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Comparative Electro-Physiology: A Physico-Physiological Study This volume concludes the line of investigation on responsive phenomena in general, which I commenced with the publication of a Memoir at the International Congress of Science, Paris, 1900. In this first of my publications on the subject I undertook to show the similarities of response in inorganic and living substances. The method which I at that time employed for obtaining my response-records was that of Conductivity Variation. With the object of showing that the similarity of response here demonstrated to exist was due to some fundamental molecular reaction, common to matter in general, and therefore to be detected by any method of recording response, I next undertook to record the Electro-motive Variation under stimulus. Believing, as I did, in the continuity of these responsive phenomena, I used the same experimental devices by which I had already succeeded in obtaining the electric response of inorganic substances, to test whether ordinary plants also, meaning those usually regarded as insensitive, would or would not exhibit excitatory electrical response to stimulus. Book Synopsis Encyclopedia of Quality of Life and Well-Being Research by : Alex C. Michalos
Download or read book Encyclopedia of Quality of Life and Well-Being Research written by Alex C. Michalos and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-02-12 with total page 7347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this encyclopedia is to provide a comprehensive reference work on scientific and other scholarly research on the quality of life, including health-related quality of life research or also called patient-reported outcomes research. Since the 1960s two overlapping but fairly distinct research communities and traditions have developed concerning ideas about the quality of life, individually and collectively, one with a fairly narrow focus on health-related issues and one with a quite broad focus. In many ways, the central issues of these fields have roots extending to the observations and speculations of ancient philosophers, creating a continuous exploration by diverse explorers in diverse historic and cultural circumstances over several centuries of the qualities of human existence. What we have not had so far is a single, multidimensional reference work connecting the most salient and important contributions to the relevant fields. Entries are organized alphabetically and cover basic concepts, relatively well established facts, lawlike and causal relations, theories, methods, standardized tests, biographic entries on significant figures, organizational profiles, indicators and indexes of qualities of individuals and of communities of diverse sizes, including rural areas, towns, cities, counties, provinces, states, regions, countries and groups of countries.

Book Synopsis Advances in Physiological Research by : H. McLennan
Download or read book Advances in Physiological Research written by H. McLennan and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 502 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The XXX Congress of the International Union of Physiological Sciences took place in Vancouver, Canada, in July 1986; and this Volume contains a selection of the Review Lectures which formed part of the Congress programme. They cover most of the areas of contemporary physiology and were presented by distinguished scientists from many parts of the world. An innovation at this Congress was the inclusion in the programme of a number of lectures devoted to historical subjects. These lectures attracted large audiences at the meetings, and three of them also appear in this book. Finally, the Plenary Lectures which formed part of the opening and closing ceremonies and which deal with some aspects of Canadian physiological history, find a place here as well. The Editors are grateful to all of the authors who provided the manuscripts which go to make up this book, and to John Donald for his invaluable assistance in the preparation of the final text; as well of course to all of the contributors whose participation made the Congress the success which it was. It is hoped that this Volume will provide a useful memento of the event.
