Book excerpt: "Polystyrene-co-4-hydroxystyrene ionomers (3.0-22 mol %) were synthesized via neutralization of demethylated polystyrene-co-4-methoxystyrene. The polystyrene-co-4-hydroxymethylstyrene ionomers (2.5-19.4 mol %) were prepared from the partial chloromethylation of polystyrene, followed by esterification, saponification, and finally neutralization. The physical properties of the ionomers as well as their nonionic precursors were studied by calorimetry, torsion pendulum and small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). Stress relaxation studies of the ionomers were also done. While evidence for ion aggregation was obtained for the styrene-4-hydroxystyrene ionomers from SAXS and torsion pendulum studies, no firm evidence was obtained for the styrene-4-hydroxymethylstyrene ionomers. Stress relaxation studies on both systems, however, showed failure of time-temperature superposition at high ion contents, indicating that these systems are both thermorheologically complex. The glass transition temperature of the matrix, the size of the ionic aggregates and the strengths of the ionic interactions within these large aggregates were related to the type and position of the ionic group." --

This book was released on 2009-05-15 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Surface Engineering of Polymer Membranes covers the processes that modify membrane surfaces to improve their in-service performance, meaning, to confer surface properties which are different from the bulk properties. Purposes may be to minimize fouling, modulate hydrophilicity/ hydrophobicity, enhance biocompatibility, create diffusion barriers, provide functionalities, mimic biomembranes, fabricate nanostructures, etc. First, the basics of surface engineering of polymer membranes are covered. Then topics such as surface modification by graft polymerization and macromolecule immobilization, biomimetic surfaces, enzyme immobilization, molecular recognition, and nanostructured surfaces are discussed. This book provides a unique synthesis of the knowledge of the role of surface chemistry and physics in membrane science. Dr. Zhikang Xu of the Institute of Polymer Science of Zhejiang University has eight Chinese patents and in 2006 was honored as a Distinguished Young Scholar by the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NNSFC).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alphaherpesviruses are a fascinating group of DNA viruses that includes important human pathogens such as herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1), HSV-2, and varicella-zoster virus (VZV): the causative agents of cold sores, genital ulcerous disease, and chickenpox/shingles, respectively. A key attribute of these viruses is their ability to establish lifelong latent infection in the peripheral nervous system of the host. Such persistence requires subversion of the host's immune system and intrinsic antiviral defense mechanisms. Understanding the mechanisms of the immune evasion and what triggers viral reactivation is a major challenge for today's researchers. This has prompted enormous research efforts into understanding the molecular and cellular biology of these viruses. This up-to-date and comprehensive volume aims to distill the most important research in this area providing a timely overview of the field. Topics covered include: transcriptional regulation, DNA replication, translational control, virus entry and capsid assembly, the role of microRNAs in infection and oncolytic vectors for cancer therapy. In addition there is coverage of virus-host interactions, including apoptosis, subversion of host protein quality control and DNA damage response pathways, autophagy, establishment and reactivation from latency, interferon responses, immunity and vaccine development. Essential reading for everyone working with alphaherpesviruses and of interest to all virologists working on latent infections.
