Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A detailed picture is presented of the physical and chemical phenomena that affect the behavior of cobalt-base superalloys. Solid-solution strengthening is obtained from the high-melting metallic elements molybdenum, tungsten, tantalum, and columbium. These elements also participate in precipitation reactions involving their carbides. Precipitation of intermetallic compounds such as Ni3Ti is an important process in cobalt alloys containing appreciable amounts of nickel and titanium. The relationships among microstructure, heat treatment, and mechanical properties of the important commercial alloys are considered, and whenever possible, explained on the basis of the physical and chem cal processes that occur. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Powder Metallurgy of Superalloys details the advancement of powder metallurgy in the context of producing superalloys. The book is comprised of nine chapters that cover the underlying principles of superalloys produced through powder metallurgy. The text first covers concerns in pre-alloyed dispersion-free powders, such as powder production and characterization; powder consolidation methods; and quality control and non-destructive evaluation of P/M superalloys. The next chapter talks about oxide-dispersion-strengthened superalloys. Next, the book discusses joining techniques for P/M superalloys and the practical applications of P/M superalloys. The title will be of great use to professionals in the materials manufacturing industry.

Book excerpt: Soviet nickel-base and cobalt-base alloys for high-temperature operation are described. Wrought and cast turbine blading alloys are included, as well as oxidation-resistant sheet alloys. Mechanical and physical properties of each alloy are assembled, and a detailed list of references is presented. Where possible, the specific applications are noted. It was concluded that the Soviets have made significant contributions to superalloy development, having successfully circumvented a shortage of cobalt and molybdenum. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unique in its approach, this introduction to the physics of creep concentrates on the physical principles underlying observed phenomena. As such it provides a resource for graduate students in materials science, metallurgy, mechanical engineering, physics and chemistry as well as researchers in other fields. Following a brief mathematical treatment, the authors introduce creep phenomena together with some empirical laws and observations. The mechanisms of creep and diffusion under varying experimental conditions are subsequently analysed and developed. The second half of the text considers alloying in greater detail as well as exploring the structure and properties of superalloys and stress effects in these materials.

Book excerpt: Various aspects of the physical metallurgy of the 18 % nickel maraging steels are discussed in this report in the light of the knowledge which has thus far been accumulated on these steels. The 18 % nickel type of maraging steel was singled out for discussion because of its especially attractive combination of strength and fracture toughness, the comparative simplicity with which it can be hardened, and the relative ease with which it can be formed and joined. The highnickel maraging steels are considered to be outstanding members of a loose-knit family of agehardenable or precipitation-hardenable martensitic steels. Some comparisons and analogies are drawn among various members of this family with particular reference to the 18% nickel steels. (Author).
