Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is beneficial for technical personnel working in the field of microelectronics, optoelectronics, and photonics to get a good understanding of the physical foundations of modern semiconductor devices. Questions that technical personnel may ask are: How are electrons propagating in the periodic potential of a crystal lattice? What are the foundations of semiconductor heterostructure devices? How does quantum mechanics relate to semiconductor heterostructures? This book tries to answer questions such as these. The book provides a basis for the understanding of modern semiconductor devices that have dimensions in the nanometer range, that is, comparable to the electron de Broglie wavelength. For such small spatial dimensions, classical physics no longer gives a full description of physical processes. The inclusion of quantum mechanical principles becomes mandatory and provides a useful description of common physical processes in electronic, optoelectronic, and photonic devices. Chapters 1 to 11 teach the quantum‐mechanical principles, including the postulates of quantum mechanics, operators, the uncertainty principle, the Schrödinger equation, non‐periodic and periodic potentials, quantum wells, and perturbation theory. Chapters 12 to 20 apply these principles to semiconductor devices and discuss the density of states, semiconductor statistics, carrier concentrations, doping, tunneling, and aspects of heterostructure devices. The 2022 edition is a complete revision of the 2015 edition and also updates the formatting to make it easily viewable with electronic display devices.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Physical Basis of Electronics: An Introductory Course, Second Edition is an 11-chapter text that discusses the physical concepts of electronic devices. This edition deals with the considerable advances in electronic techniques, from the introduction of field effect transistors to the development of integrated circuits. The opening chapters discuss the fundamentals of vacuum electronics and solid-state electronics. The subsequent chapters deal with the other components of electronic devices and their functions, including semiconductor diode and transistor as an amplifier and a switch. The discussion then shifts to several types of field-effect transistor and the production of p-n junctions, transistors, and integrated circuits. A chapter highlights the four classifications of thermionic valves commonly used in electronic devices, namely, diodes, triodes, tetrodes, and pentodes. This chapter also considers the effect of small gas introduced to the characteristics of these valves. The concluding chapters discuss some of the basic modes of operation of electronic circuits and cathode-ray tube. This edition is of great value to undergraduate electronics students.

This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The past three decades have been a period where useful current and voltage instabilities in solids have progressed from exciting research problems to a wide variety of commercially available devices. Materials and electronics research has led to devices such as the tunnel (Esaki) diode, transferred electron (Gunn) diode, avalanche diodes, real-space transfer devices, and the like. These structures have proven to be very important in the generation, amplification, switching, and processing of microwave signals up to frequencies exceeding 100 GHz. In this treatise we focus on a detailed theoretical understanding of devices of the kind that can be made unstable against circuit oscillations, large amplitude switching events, and in some cases, internal rearrangement of the electric field or current density distribution. The book is aimed at the semiconductor device physicist, engineer, and graduate student. A knowledge of solid state physics on an elementary or introductory level is assumed. Furthermore, we have geared the book to device engineers and physicists desirous of obtaining an understanding substantially deeper than that associated with a small signal equivalent circuit approach. We focus on both analytical and numerical treatment of specific device problems, concerning ourselves with the mechanism that determines the constitutive relation governing the device, the boundary conditions (contact effects), and the effect of the local circuit environment.

It is written for a mixed audience of electricalengineering and applied physics students who have some knowledge of elementaryundergraduate quantum mechanics and statistical mechanics. This book, based on asuccessful course taught at MIT, is divided pedagogically into three parts: (I) ElectronicStructure, (II) Transport Properties, and (III) Optical Properties. Each topic is explainedin the context of bulk materials and then extended to low-dimensional materials whereapplicable. Problem sets review the content of each chapter to help students to understandthe material described in each of the chapters more deeply and to prepare them to masterthe next chapters.

Book excerpt: This book provides the basis for a two-semester graduate course on solid-state physics. The first half presents all the knowledge necessary for a one-semester survey of solid-state physics, but in greater depth than most introductory solid state physics courses. The second half includes most of the important research over the past half-century, covering both the fundamental principles and most recent advances. This new edition includes the latest developments in the treatment of strongly interacting two-dimensional electrons and discusses the generalization from small to larger systems. The book provides explanations in a class-tested tutorial style, and each chapter includes problems reviewing key concepts and calculations. The updated exercises and solutions enable students to become familiar with contemporary research activities, such as the electronic properties of massless fermions in graphene and topological insulators.
