Book excerpt: Physical education plays a vital role in children’s development, health and well-being, and is an increasingly important part of the government’s strategy for healthy schools. The role and profile of physical education at primary level continues to grow as awareness of the need to encourage an active lifestyle at an early age increases. This accessible guide to teaching PE within the 3–11 age range will allow all non-specialist primary teachers to approach the subject with confidence, encouraging a better understanding of its role within schools and the special contribution it can make to children’s lives. The book: shows how to guide children’s movement experiences from the Foundation Stage right through to adventurous activities and sports games at the end of Key Stage 2 contains a wealth of practical advice on developmentally appropriate practical ideas supports the PECCSL strategy (PE, School Sport and Club Links) of providing at least 2 hours a week on high quality PE and school sport within schools. Written for all early years and primary students on teacher education courses, this book is also relevant for teachers, HLTAs and other non-PE specialists working with children up to the age of 11.

This book was released on 2013-11-13 with total page 503 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Physical inactivity is a key determinant of health across the lifespan. A lack of activity increases the risk of heart disease, colon and breast cancer, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, osteoporosis, anxiety and depression and others diseases. Emerging literature has suggested that in terms of mortality, the global population health burden of physical inactivity approaches that of cigarette smoking. The prevalence and substantial disease risk associated with physical inactivity has been described as a pandemic. The prevalence, health impact, and evidence of changeability all have resulted in calls for action to increase physical activity across the lifespan. In response to the need to find ways to make physical activity a health priority for youth, the Institute of Medicine's Committee on Physical Activity and Physical Education in the School Environment was formed. Its purpose was to review the current status of physical activity and physical education in the school environment, including before, during, and after school, and examine the influences of physical activity and physical education on the short and long term physical, cognitive and brain, and psychosocial health and development of children and adolescents. Educating the Student Body makes recommendations about approaches for strengthening and improving programs and policies for physical activity and physical education in the school environment. This report lays out a set of guiding principles to guide its work on these tasks. These included: recognizing the benefits of instilling life-long physical activity habits in children; the value of using systems thinking in improving physical activity and physical education in the school environment; the recognition of current disparities in opportunities and the need to achieve equity in physical activity and physical education; the importance of considering all types of school environments; the need to take into consideration the diversity of students as recommendations are developed. This report will be of interest to local and national policymakers, school officials, teachers, and the education community, researchers, professional organizations, and parents interested in physical activity, physical education, and health for school-aged children and adolescents.

In fact, if you believe that all children are identical—with the same interests, abilities, and size—then Children Moving is not the book for you. The authors of Children Moving, however, recognize that each child is unique. One size does not fit all! Thus, Children Moving guides you in the process of learning to teach a curriculum that is differentiated for a range of skill abilities and fitness levels. If all children were the same, we would be able to package a curriculum with the same games and the same gymnastic stunts and dances you would do with all of the children as if they were identical. Children Moving, on the other hand, introduces you to the reflective approach—a process of teaching that provides the background for you to adapt, adjust, and modify lessons so they are interesting and worthwhile for all of the children you teach—from the lowest to the highest skill and fitness levels. The ultimate goal, of course, is to guide youngsters in the process of becoming physically active for a lifetime. The lesson plans to accompany Children Moving, On the Move: Lesson Plans for Children Moving, are now available on the CREATE platform as an ExpressBook. This book was released on 1990-01-01 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Autism is a puzzling disorder which to date has not been discussed in sufficient detail in most adapted physical education texts. This new book shows the need for additional information. It describes autism and offers suggestions on assessment and programming for students with autism in adapted physical education/regular physical education classes. It is important for physical educators and other teachers to work together to provide the student with autism with the best possible support. No one discipline can program in isolations. Interdisciplinary approaches increase the flow of ideas and keep morale up, while maximizing the students' level of learning.
